Href lang issues - help needed!
-
Hi, I have an issue with Google indexing the US version of our website rather than the UK version on Google.co.uk. I have added hreflang tags to both sites (https://www.pacapod.com/ and https://us.pacapod.com/), have updated and submitted an XML sitemap for each website and checked that the country targeting in search console is set-up correctly but Google are still indexing the wrong website. I would be grateful for any assistance with this issue. Many thanks Eddie

Hi Tom, I'm not too sure what the developers have done but the issue is that the UK website doesn't appear to be getting indexed in Google.co.uk but their US website is. When you visit the site you are prompted to select which country site you would like to visit and I'm not sure if this is causing the issue. I've also used the fetch as Google tool in search console and it's returning a re-direct message from https://www.pacapod.com/ to https://us.pacapod.com/.
Thanks Eddie

When you say country targeting, do you mean ip redirects?
-
Hi, I haven't managed to resolve this issue unfortunately and wondered if anyone could provide some assistance please. The hreflang tags look to be set-up correctly but when I use the fetch and render as Google tool in search console I'm getting a re-direct from https://www.pacapod.com/ to https://us.pacapod.com/. I'm waiting on a response from the developers but any help or advice would be much appreciated:-) Many thanks Eddie

Hi Tom, many thanks for getting back to me. I've updated the href lang tags now. I've also used the Google fetch tool in search console this morning and I'm getting a re-direct message (https://www.pacapod.com was re-directed to us.pacapod.com). The developers of the website implemented some country targeting a few weeks ago which seems to coincide with this issue. I've asked them for a response without success so far!

I'm even more awake than the last time I checked too!
Looking at the source of say: https://au.pacapod.com/collections/classic-plain-changing-bags
You have the following code:
Whereas on https://www.pacapod.com/collections/classic-plain-changing-bags you have:
and https://us.pacapod.com/collections/classic-plain-changing-bags being:
In short, looks like your AU site is setup incorrectly to just reference the homepage.

Thanks for your help Tom, it's much appreciated. I've moved the hreflang tags to the top of the head and removed the duplicate canonical tag. Fingers crossed this does the job:-). Thanks Eddie

Hi Eddie,
Sorry, hadn't woken up when I looked this morning!
If possible, try moving your hreflang toward the top of the head. You've also got two canonicals in the head too.
Having a look at the hreflang code though, I don't see any mistakes in it, so perhaps it's just placement.

Hi Tom, ive added the hreflang to the Shopify template file. Do I need to add them to the sitemap as well? I’ve also just used the fetch tool in console and Google is reporting a re-direct to the US site so I’m not sure if that is the issue. I can’t seem to replicate the redirect at my end. Many thanks for your help much appreciated. Eddie

Hi Eddie,
I've had a check of your sitemaps, I can't see any hreflang? https://www.pacapod.com/sitemap.xml

Discovered - currently not indexed issues
Hi there We're having an issue with our site recently where our new blog posts are not indexing properly from Google.
Technical SEO | | Syte
Inspecting it with Google Search Console gives up the errors "Discovered - currently not indexed" and "Excluded". I.e. it seems like Google sees our sitemap but chooses not to crawl and index for some reason. Does anybody have any ideas why this might be, and what we could do to fix it?

Creating a help hub, not sure the best name to use, " keyword help " or " help hub "?
I've been creating new content for our site, lots of help related content, so I created a help hub section. Now the more I go through it, and look at url structure and breadcrumbs, I can't help but think I should be using a keyword in there, but also don't want to over do it, since the keyword we are shooting for is also a subsection of our site, complete with url keyword and breadcrumb. So I just don't want to have too many over redundant titles like keyword this and keyword that, so I came here to get some advice from the awesome community of folks. Keep help hub so it's: Url: site.com/help-hub/helppage1 Breadcrumb: Home > Help-Hub > Help Page 1 or Url: site.com/keyword/help/helppage1 Breadcrumb: Home > Keyword > Help > Help Page 1

Wrapping my head around an e-commerce anchor filter issue, need help
I am having a hard time understanding how Google will deal with this scenario, I would love to hear what you guys think or suggest. Ok a category page on the site in question looks like this. http://makeupaddict.me/6-skin-care All fine and well, But a paginated page or a filtered category pages look like these http://makeupaddict.me/6-skin-care#/page-2 and http://makeupaddict.me/6-skin-care#/price-391-1217 From my understanding Google does not index an anchor without a shebang (#!), but that doesn't mean that they do not still crawl them, correct? That is where the issue comes in, since anchors are not indexed and dropped from the urls, when Google crawls a filtered or paginated page, it is getting different results. From the best of my understanding, and someone can correct me if I am wrong but an anchor is not passed in web languages like a querystring is. So if I am using php and land on http://makeupaddict.me/6-skin-care or http://makeupaddict.me/6-skin-care#/price-391-1217 and use something like .$_SERVER['SELF'] to get the url both pages will return http://makeupaddict.me/6-skin-care since the anchor is handled client side. With that being the case, is it imagined that Google uses that standard or is it thought they have a custom function that grabs the whole url anchor in all? Also if they are crawling the page with the anchor, but seeing it anchor less how are they handling the changing content?

Joomla Title Help - Plugin?
I am currently working on a site in Joomla (2.5) and continue to run across issues with titles. Currently, the site is set to display the page title just over the content. Turning this off really is not an option, as it is necessary to keep these titles as part of the content. Right now, my page titles are not well optimized. What I would like to have is a separate meta title used for SEO purposes, similar to what a plugin like Yoast would do in WordPress - where there is a name for a page (often used in content as well), but a meta title that is used by Google. Hope that makes sense. If anyone knows of a plugin that may be helpful, that would be great. Thanks!

Help! Need advice for a new HTTPS URL!
Hi. We have just launched a new website that is fully secure with the HTTPS url. You can still access the home page with an ordinary HTTP address. That is what we want to change. Should we forward the HTTP url to the HTTPS? Redirect? It is the same URL for both. http://www.parrotmoon.com Thank you for all ideas! Jay

Duplicate content issues caused by our CMS
Hello fellow mozzers, Our in-house CMS - which is usually good for SEO purposes as it allows all the control over directories, filenames, browser titles etc that prevent unwieldy / meaningless URLs and generic title tags - seems to have got itself into a bit of a tiz when it comes to one of our clients. We have tried solving the problem to no avail, so I thought I'd throw it open and see if anyone has a soultion, or whether it's just a fault in our CMS. Basically, the SEs are indexing two identical pages, one ending with a / and the other ending /index.php, for one of our sites (www.signature-care-homes.co.uk). We have gone through the site and made sure the links all point to just one of these, and have done the same for off-site links, but there is still the duplicate content issue of both versions getting indexed. We also set up an htaccess file to redirect to the chosen version, but to no avail, and we're not sure canonical will work for this issue as / pages should redirect to /index.php anyway - and that's we can't work out. We have set the access file to point to index.php, and that should be what should be happening anyway, but it isn't. Is there an alternative way of telling the SE's to only look at one of these two versions? Also, we are currently rewriting the content and changing the structure - will this change the situation we find ourselves in?
