In my opinion you shouldn‘t ’chase’ a backlink with the only aim to improve your DA. Which after all is an estimation and always needs to be taken into context with other metrics.
You should go after backlinks that are on relevant websites that will also bring your site:

Potential referral traffic

Potential brand awareness

In my experience low DA links do not hurt as long as the bulk of your links are not coming from them. There may be some really great sites that are newer and have not built up DA but I'd still like them to link to us. As long as they're not spammy garbage you should be good.

As a rule of thumb yes but......
one or two low DA links to your domain won't hurt but a lot of low DA backlinks sends a signal that you are trying to game the system and your serp will suffer as a result.
Moz found during one of its studies that a backlink from a high domain authority page on a low domain authority website provides more value than a backlink from the opposite.
If you are building backlinks it is best to aim for higher DA sites as they will help more than hurt.

Ultimately, Google doesn't care what the site's DA is. DA is also easily manipulated. Before you start obtaining links from these sites, it's important to do your due diligence. Ensure the site's aren't low quality or being spammed with low quality links (which could bring up DA while still hurting a site in Google’s eyes).
Realistically, the best links to obtain are going to be from quality sites with high relevancy. Quality sites are sites that have a healthy backlink profile and history.
Keep in mind, create link only with relevant site in a professional manner. Never do spamming.

Backlinks and SPAM
I was doing some back link review of competitors and I have noticed that many of our competition have 300+ do follow back links from Justia.com and an additional 300+ do follow links from law.cornell.edu (they share the same database). The links on Justia are from different pages and they are all going to the root of our competitors site. So the questions are as follows; 1: For the purpose of SEO is this considered SPAM 2: If not SPAM, then does it have a positive effect on the competitions website and should I attempt to emulate for my client. What are he benefits of getting 200+ links from DA 40+ non-relevant websites?
I have a client who has an opportunity to sponsor a prestigious national organisation. In return, they will get 200+ links from the websites of the organisation's members. Most of which are DA 40+.None of the linking sites have any relevance to my client's industry.1) How likely do you think it is that Google will view these as paid links?2) Do you feel that there is potential harm in gaining this many non-relevant links in a short time-frame?3) The client wants me to quantify the ranking benefits of gaining these links and calculate a potential ROI. PR1 and PR2 backlinks
We're doing some content marketing. I've heard that it is a good idea to target even PR1 and PR2 sites (small DA sites). I'm concerned about these sites disappearing after a few months, as we've found that losing a backlink can sting a bit and be worse than never having it. Though this isn't as big a deal any more. Anyways, can somebody say when a PR1/PR2 backlink would be appropriate to go after? Some of them would be easy and if it's appropriate I'd like to include them. So far they would only pass our standards if they are Above PR0 Look like a white hat, quality site from the outside Have a clean backlink profile Look like they're going to stick around Successful Social Media Accounts a plus What are you guys' criteria for including these sites? My sites are indexed, but when i search for different keywords on google, i find them on page 5-7 . I need to see them on page 1-2 . But my site's authority is : 1 .

Press Release Sites for Backlinks
OK, I read a previous thread about whether people found press release sites useful (specifically I am considering a reputable pay for release service). I understand the knock on press releases in this digital age (namely that no one reads them and arguably never did . . . ), but I was interested in moving the discussion in a different direction . . . Do press releases services really help a sites performance based on increased backlinking? Is there a SEO benefit to PR services? My company is a local print company. I've done quite a bit of research on my local competitors, and specifically for a couple products we would like to dominate. The good news is that it looks like the hurdle would not be terribly high to really take over the web presence with a well planned and executed website/SEO campaign. My inclination is that for a relatively small company like mine (dealing with relatively small competitors) it WOULD benefit me to pay for the sheer number of backlinks a PR program would generate. The monthly cost is frankly about the same as the cost of this site, which OF COURSE I get value from (hey moderator, how about a couple extra MOZ points for that one!) Specifically, I am looking at this for myself, but feel free to expand the question to the broader topic.
