Change of URLs - Part of Migration
-
We are looking to change our URLs to this format /SKU/TITLE/COLOUR as part of our SEO migration.
e.g. https://example.com.au/ac-rck-b/rolla-crew-knit/berry.htmlAs of the moment, our URLs are TITLE/NO
e.g. https://example.com.au/rolla-crew-knit/6562563.html
(Shopify is creating a random number on the end of the URL which is representing a different colour)Is this fine SEO wise? Will this affect rankings and user experience?

Thank you very much!

Hi chris
Best practice for all eCommerce stores is not to have colour in the URL. If you do then you will have each colour competing with the others for position in search. It is easy to write a unique product description for a style, but when this appears on every colour variant URL then you just create a mass of duplicate content on all the different colour pages. Something that will result in none of them ranking well.
One product for one style - then have a colour dropdown for all the other colours and possibly sizes. This makes for the strongest possible product page for SEO. Combine that with a 150-200 word product description and you are laughing! really, it is the best way - I have tested this to death!
There are plenty of examples out there - just look for 'creating colour variants in Shopify'
https://help.shopify.com/manual/products/variants
Then each page will be unique with no silly colour code on the end.
I hope that helps.
Regards Nigel

Large Site - Complete Site URL Change and How to Preserver Organic Rankings/Traffic
Hello Community, What is your experience with site redesign when it comes to preserving the traffic? If a large enterprise website has to go through a site-wide enhancement (resulting in change of all URLs and partial content), what do you expect from Organic rankings and traffic? I assume we will experience a period that Google needs to "re-orientate" itself with the new site, if so, do you have similar experience and tips on how to minimize the traffic loss? Thanks

How do I best handle a minor URL change?
My company is about to complete an upgrade to our website but part of this will be changing the URLs slightly. Mainly the .aspx suffix will be dropped off the pages that we're most worried about. The current URLs will automatically redirect to the new pages, will this be enough or will there be an SEO impact? If it helps the site is www.duracard.com and the product pages are the ones we want to keep ranked. For instance if someone searches for "plastic gift cards" our page '<cite>https://www.duracard.com/products/plastic-gift-cards.aspx</cite>' is #3 and we want to make sure it stays that way once we change it to 'https://www.duracard.com/products/plastic-gift-cards'. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Optimal URLs for SEO and UX
We are considering restructuring the URL scheme on one of the websites we maintain. We have a few options. Currently news article URLs are as follows:

http://domain.com/news/1234/article-title-name/ Download section URLs are as follows:
http://domain.com/downloads/files/1234/file-title-of-download-here/ Forum URLS:
http://forum.domain.com/forum/topic/1234/title-of-forum-topic-here/ We feel that these are a bit too long for both SEO and user experience. We want to remove as many directories from the URLs as possible. From experience, what do you recommend changing for the example URLs above? We have some ideas below...and we need to keep the ID in the URLs...however I know this is a little frustrating. Some ideas we have for news articles:

Canonical URL Question
Hi Everyone I like to run this question by the community and get a second opinion on best practices for an issue that I ran into. I got two pages, Page A is the original page and Page B is the page with duplicate content. We already added** ="Page A**" />** to the duplicate content (Page B).** **Here is my question, since Page B is duplicate content and there is a link rel="canonical" added to it, would you put in the time to add meta tags and optimize the title of the page? Thanks in advance for all your help.**

Url with hypen or.co?
Given a choice, for your #1 keyword, would you pick a .com with one or two hypens? (chicago-real-estate.com) or a .co with the full name as the url (chicagorealestate.co)? Is there an accepted best practice regarding hypenated urls and/or decent results regarding the effectiveness of the.co? Thank you in advance!
