AMP for WordPress: To Do Or Not To Do
-
Hello SEO's,
Recently some of my VIPs (Very Important Pages) have slipped, and all the pages above them are AMP.
I've been waiting to switch to AMP for as long as possible bc I've heard it's a very mixed bag.
As of Oct 2018, what do people think? Is it worth doing? Is there a preferred plugin for wordpress? Are things more likely to go right than wrong?
The page that has gotten hit the hardest is https://humanfoodbar.com/plant-paradox-diet/plant-paradox-diet-full-shopping-list-for-lectin-free-diet/. It used to bring in ~70% of organic traffic. It was #1 and is now often near the bottom of the page.
Thanks all!
Remy

Hmmn, well, it is always risky to try something like AMP. But, if you are seeing that all of your competitors that are now outranking you are using AMP, I feel like it's at least worth a test.
I would suggest using AMP on a portion of these pages experiencing this and see if they get a rankings boost.

Thanks Lydia.
As for Medic, yes it was targeting sites like mine. But, I didn't see a drop-off until early Oct, which is long after Medic rolled out, of course. Who knows!
My site is very content heavy. How does that factor in?

There are many reasons that a page could be losing traffic in Oct 2018 outside of AMP. I would make sure that this dip cannot be attributed to one of the recent "medic updates" as well.
To your point, I have also heard a mixed bag of AMP results when switching. How content-heavy would you say your site is?

WordPress and Rich Snippets plugin creating 501 error
Good Morning MOZguru's, Right, so I've been trying to install the Google schema.org rich snippet plugin through Wordpress for a website, and after I activate it, the website does not load ( appears a blank page) or loads very very slooooowww. Also through the MOZBar, Http status section, after the plug in it's activated it shows a 501 error. I had this issues with another website I was working on, hosted by Godaddy, and fixed it by installing plugins through the control panel on go daddy and not through WordPress. However this website is not hosted on the same platform. Does anyone know what should I do in order for the plugin to work and not affect the website? Many thanks, Moncia

Wordpress Comments Pagination
Hi Mozzers What is your view on the following. Should you Paginate comments to increase page speed? If yes, at what # of comments would you begin pagination? (with the objective being decreasing page load times) Apply rel="canonical" back to the main article URL? eg: url/comment-page-1 => url noindex the comment pages? create a "View all" comments page? Thanks in advance for your help! 🙂

Is Amazon EC2 a viable solution for Wordpress websites?
I'm getting very interested in Amazon Web Services lately as an alternative to reseller hosting. Anyone have experience on their cloud with Wordpress sites? Would be nice to be able to spin up sites to faster service if needed, but not sure if its more pricey and not ready for that adoption yet.

Wordpress Permalink Structure
A quick Wordpress Permalink checkup... I'm generally a fan of %postname% Permalink structure in Wordpress - although this does create a completely flat architecture, so that ALL Pages AND Posts are found at www.domain.com/_________ I'm sure I've heard, read, or ingested somewhere that it makes more sense to use /blog/%postname% which then makes all Blog Posts reside at www.domain.com/blog/________ with the static Page content still being at www.domain.com/________ Any thoughts to why this would NOT be a good idea? To me this seems more logical.. and like I say I'm sure I've heard an authority say Google kind of prefers that it can differentiate Blog content from everything else. I've used this successfully on a few sites so far, and all seems to be good. (Moz although not Wordpress, uses this structure for it's blog). Thanks!

Using AggregateReview markup to generate star sinppets for wordpress blog posts? OK or Spam?
Do you believe using a plugin that allows visitors to rate your blog posts and then generating AggregateReview markup code for each blog post is in accordance with google guidelines? I saw there are a couple of wordpress plugins that offer this functionality. Anybody who had any negative experience? Star icons will certainly increase visibility in SERP.

Convert keyword rich PDFs to web pages (text & images)
SteriPEN is a portable water purifier that kills viruses, protozoa, e-coli, etc. Because of the technical and safety requirements nature of the product, our website has much documentation of testing, organisms affected, and more. These are in pdf form and can often be found through google search (and through links on specific pages). Because of the keyword-richness of these documents pertaining to microbes SteriPEN kills, etc. does it make sense to convert these pdf's into html text and images? Then I was thinking perhaps writing a blog post AND generating key links on important landing pages to these documents (as html). Removing pdfs may be harmful? Not a clue as to the cost/benefit.
