Post-August Google Updates High volume keyphrases rankings mess
-
Howdy, fellow mozzers,
Couple of our clients keep losing rankings, slowly but surely, which seem to correlate to August Google updates. No major changes to the websites have been done - neither code, backlink profile nor content. It seem to affect higher search volume keyphrases, while other longer tail keyphrases are climbing up.
The screenshots of the visibility rankings are attached below.
Any ideas/news/thought about the Google update itself or what might be happening? I know that the Medic update was overall quality, yet it seems to be that these websites in particular are going down after Birthday update, not Medic itself. Google and da mighty Internets being quite.. Help!

Thanks for the response.
Conversions and revenue are down, by significant number. I know that the update is supposed to be about relativity of content to users' intent etc, and it's all good if conversions are on the same level. But they are not, that's why I am raising this question here.
_"Due to that, I'm not really seeing the same correlation which you are seeing" - _sorry, the screenshots were not as representative, here are the ones where you can see what i'm talking about clearly (I included higher volume keyphrases only here, and that's the problem we are having):

_"Are you sure you're going down - and that others aren't investing more and going up?" - _well, i don't know how much others are investing, but looking at competitive research, I'm not seeing anything extra competition is doing - across all available metrics (content freshness, amount of content, backlinks etc) - we are outperforming.
_"As you said you had done nothing on your site" - _not really, we are always improving, I'm just saying that there weren't any major overhauls or anything drastic.

That's unfortunate in one way but positive in another. Often long-tail terms are further down the buying funnel anyway. Are conversions or revenue down? If not I wouldn't really worry about it. The much lower visibility in your attached image seems to start in October, whilst Google's significant core integration apparently 'peaked' on August 2nd.
Due to that, I'm not really seeing the same correlation which you are seeing
Remember that SEO is a competitive environment. Are you sure you're going down - and that others aren't investing more and going up?
Where you say:
"No major changes to the websites have been done - neither code, backlink profile nor content."
Sometimes this in and of itself can lose rankings. If you stagnate, others will notice and try to outdo you.
There are so many things this could be. It's likely that it's a bundle of stuff:
- Google rolled out an update which 'raised' quality standards
- As you said you had done nothing on your site
- Others adapted
- They go up, you go down
It could actually be as simple as that!

How do you optimize a blog post for SEO after the RankBrain?
Hi Guys Just curious to hear what you guys do to rank blog posts in the top in Google especially onsite, after the RankBrain update? Do you still use SEO tools to optimize this or are the SEO tools outdated for this? If yes which tools do you use to get success with? Cheers John

Google Birthday Update - noticeable industries?
Anybody see anything specific around which sites are seeing upswing from birthday update? We saw a lot of rankings drop, most drastic in terms that are more loosely associated with our offerings but also seeing more sites with higher DA taking a spot or two above and some more images in top spots for ecommerce terms that you might not usually think to click images to view. For a lot of these terms we're sure our conversion is better, and we offer to more of the search query intent, than some of the competitor sites that have taken top spots - even Amazon and staples who I'm guessing will move back down after google sees people leaving their site to find what they are looking for (hopefully).

Algorithm update?
I read on SEOLand that there may have been an algorithm update on Feb. 1st. I got our rankings report back today and was shocked to see 103 of our 530 tracked keyword phrases went down over the last week, especially on pages that we recently updated (like a month ago max). The pages we updated went up in ranking the last two weeks in a row, but went down this week, considerably (like #14 to #34). We also submitted a sitemap update last Friday to Search Console. Checked on Search Console and noticed we also had a dip in CTR around the same time period. I know the rumored changes were targeting PBN, but could other changes be in play as well? I know we have (against my advice) a few syndicating blogging partnerships who we share content with from time to time, but nothing like a PBN. Wondering if anyone else saw a considerable dip in their rankings?

Https & Google Updated Guidelines
Hi We have https on aspects of the site which users directly interact with, such as login, basket page. But we don't have https across the whole site. In light of Google adding it to their guidelines - is this something we need to put into action? Also same question on the Accessibility point Ensure that your pages are useful for readers with visual impairments, for example, by testing usability with a screen-reader. Are we going to be penalised if these are not added to our site? Thank you

Where has Google found the £1.00 value for the penny black? Is it Google moving beyond the mark-ups too?
Hi guys, I am curious, so am wondering something about the Penny Black SERPs.
Algorithm Updates | | madcow78
Apparently Google shows a value of £1.00 Penny Black SERP From where does it come from? It's not the value Penny Black Value SERP The Wikipedia page hasn't any mark-up about it, actually it has the Price value mark-up of 1 penny Penny Black Wiki Markup Among the rare stamps, also the Inverted Jenny shows a value Inverted Jenny SERP But it's clearly taken from USPS and it's the cost of a new version of this rare stamp USPS Inverted Jenny Indeed, the mark-up matches that value USPS Inverted Jenny Mark-up I've been looking on-line for a new version of the Penny Black, but couldn't find anything.
The only small piece of information that I've found to correlate one pound with the Penny Black is on the Wikipedia page, but the point is: is Google able to strip those information from that piece? It's not a mark-up, it's not a number and mostly it's not a simple sentence like "The penny black cost was of £1.00" It reads "One full sheet cost 240 pennies or one pound sterling". Penny Black Wikipedia particular Is it Google moving beyond the mark-ups too? Thanks, Pierpaolo 9Cm3MOs.jpg f7XYNtF.jpg 5PpwapB.jpg hYUJswI.jpg 7kbIC4Q.jpg jnu1Gbe.jpg Wzltg0t.jpg2 -
Bounce rates: Google vs others
Hello Mozzers, I was wondering if anyone could share some insight into how Google calculates bounce rates vs other analytics out there. We use both Google analytics and Clicky here. I've made several changes and additions to the website in hopes to increase traffic, optimization and reduce bounce rates. So far so good on all fronts. However I do notice bounce rates are way higher on google analytics than Clicky. While I get a bounce rate of 20%-29% on Clicky, Google has me way up the 50's or 60%s. I've read a few articles on it but I'm still a bit confused. Thanks!

Has anyone experienced a dramatic decrease in Google rankings followed by a dramatic increase in the past few days?
I don't want to be one of those whiny people always asking about rankings, but for the first time in a while, I've seen some crazy fluctuations in Google rankings. I was wondering if anyone had any similar experiences lately.

What is the difference between Bing and Google ranking factors ?
I know basic SEO factors and i understand On Page SEO title/meta/content optimzation and Off Page backlinking factors. Yet we see different ranking on both SEs so I want to know what are those? Thanks.
