Our Sites Organic Traffic Went Down Significantly After The June Core Algorithm Update, What Can I Do?
-
After the June Core Algorithim Update, the site suffered a loss of about 30-35% of traffic. My suggestions to try to get traffic back up have been to add metadata (since the majority of our content is lacking it), as well ask linking if possible, adding keywords to alt images, expanding and adding content as it's thin content wise. I know that from a technical standpoint there are a lot of fixes we can implement, but I do not want to suggest anything as we are onboarding an SEO agency soon. Last week, I saw that traffic for the site went back to "normal" for one day and then saw a dip of 30% the next day.
Despite my efforts, traffic has been up and down, but the majority of organic traffic has dipped overall this month. I have been told by my company that I am not doing a good job of getting numbers back up, and have been given a warning stating that I need to increase traffic by 25% by the end of the month and keep it steady, or else. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is it realistic and/or possible to reach that goal?

Crazy, it happened to me, i had my South African entertainment blog traffic drop in half (HiphopZa Amapiano). Others all dropped by more than 90%, funnily the contents are very great, good practices ere observed. It's quite painful y'all. Only my South African music download blog survived a bit. Damn!

@newhazel said in Our Sites Organic Traffic Went Down Significantly After The June Core Algorithm Update, What Can I Do?:
I’m in a challenging situation and could use some advice. Since the March 2024 core update, our site has suffered a significant loss of 40-50% in traffic. Despite various efforts, including adding metadata to our content (which was previously lacking), the traffic fluctuations have continued. Just last week, we experienced a brief return to "normal" traffic for one day, followed by a 30% dip the next day.

Thanks for reply Jason,
This is my website, "https://www.stardewvalleyapk.me/", and I am tracking StarDew Valley Apk and StarDew Valley on it. I am targeting these keywords to boost traffic again.

Hi,
What's the URL & What keywords are you tracking?
-
I think you know this, but there is no way of guaranteeing getting back to your prior traffic levels in short order (or +25%), nor keeping it steady. Algorithm updates can fundamentally change the winners and losers in a given segment, and there may be no quick win to return to old results as the underlying variables have changed.
Some ideas and thoughts though:
- I don't know what kind of site you are running, but with ecommerce / lead gen sites, we have sometimes seen that this kind of core update can lead to a traffic drop without a drop in true performance (sales / leads) because the update was actually aligned with user expectations and dropped in areas where you weren't performing anyway (see e.g. slide 116 onwards in my colleague's presentation here). If you happened to find that you were in this situation, you may find that you can make the case to the business that the situation isn't as dire as it seemed at first
- For practical ideas, I'd advise checking out Marie Hayne's work - see for example her presentation at our recent SearchLove conference in Boston on practical tips for improving EAT (Expertise Authoritativeness Trustworthiness)
Good luck!

Hi Joe!
Thanks for your response! Much appreciated!
We have not audited the site, we are not even on Search Console. Resources are very limited as I am the only person working on this and don't have the technical skills or support to do any of that.
I have been doing basic on-page SEO but can't bring up the numbers after the core algorithm update. I tracked the drop on June 4th on Google Analytics. All the articles we used to rank high for organically dropped significantly (#35, #62, #15 etc when they used to be in the top 10).
I have only been able to track keywords through Moz. A few keywords that used to rank #1 are now #51. I also wonder if it's because of our ad to content ratio. It's not the most aesthetically pleasing or user-friendly site.

Hi there,
What efforts have you made to date?
Have you audited the site in more detail?
- Where the drops occurred via Search Console?
- What keywords dropped the most & when
- Audited your website to see if there are any technical issue?
- Conducted a backlink audit - do you acquire backlinks
You appear to lack the basics such as:
- meta-data
- alt tags
- substantial content, possibly due to the lack of a content strategy
25% by the end of the month doesn't sound realistic, an external agency probably won;t turn anything around in less than a few months.

GSC Performance completely dropped off, but Google Analytics is steady. Why can't GSC track my site anymore?
Hey everyone! I'm having a weird issue that I've never experienced before. For one of my clients, GSC has a complete drop-off in the Performance section. All of the data shows that everything fell flat, or almost completely flat. But in Google Analytics, we have steady results. No huge drop-off in traffic, etc. Do any of you know why GSC would all of a sudden be unable to crawl our site? Or track this data? Let me know what you think!

How often should I update the content on my pages?
I have started dropping on my rankings - due to lack of time after having a baby. I'm still managing to blog but I'm wondering if I update the content on my pages will that help? All my Meta tags and page descriptions were updated over a year ago - do I need to update these too? We were ranking in the top spots for a good few years, but we're slowly falling 😞 Please give me any advice to keep us from falling even further. I have claimed all my listings, and try to add new links once a month. I share my blog to all social sites and work hard to get Google reviews, we have 53 which is higher than any of our competitors. Any other ideas? Have I missed something that Google is looking for nowadays? Many thanks 🙂

Moving established :COM site to a .ART domain
Hi! We have an existing website that has a .com TLD with our brand name, which is completely unrelated to any of the terms we want to rank for except for the brand search of our company of course. We have an online shop and the .com site has been online for a good few years. The business activity is related to art, in fact some of our customers would search for "name of artists + art" and we appear in results. From what I have read, Google is not going to give better rankings for a .art domain name, but will the extension be counted as a potential keyword and relevancy to users searches based on example above? Does anyone have any experience with regards to this consideration? Thanks!

Using Brand value for SEO: Can we use keyword with brand name?
Hi Moz community, I am curious to know this. Let's say there is a brand value for a company. It has it's own popularity that it's been mentioned across the internet and social media directly with brand name without their service or industry keyword. Now if the company started promoting themselves like keyword along with their brand name, will it help them to rank for that keyword. For example, Moz is already famous, now they want to rank for "SEO" and related keywords, so they started calling themselves on internet "Moz SEO"; will this fetch them in ranking for keyword SEO? My ultimate question is, using primary keyword along with brand name will work out in ranking for that primary keyword or not? Thanks

Not sure whether to update existing page or create a new one
Hello guys, So far I have found this Q&A to be very helpful. I have a couple of product pages on my website which rank very low in the search results. This was because in the past they were not at all optimized in terms of title, description, etc. I would like to now optimize these pages, get some inbound links to them, etc. I'm not sure whether to do this with the existing product pages or create new ones. I'm afraid that if I optimize the current pages, the low ranking from before will carry over. Would it be better to start fresh? Thank you, Pravin

Can I have the same item description on Amazon, eBay and my website?
Hi guys, After looking on the Internet and reading the Learn SEO section on this site, I've realised that Google doesn't like duplicate content and penalises it, whether that's duplication on your own site or of another site's content. We are an online retailer currently selling on different platforms including Amazon, eBay and our own ecommerce webstore. Is it okay to have the same item description (i.e. main page copy) on each of these sites, or will our search rankings get negatively impacted? Thank you in advance, I have researched on this issue also but I couldn't find a concrete answer. Tanay

Decline in traffic but no change in rankings
I'm comparing our best search traffic month in 2011 (March) with our current traffic (April)and have seen significant declines in traffic, despite no change in our rankings or even improved rankings for the same terms. Trying to sort out an explanation. We have been a white-hat SEO site since our inception over 10 years ago. Our SEO consultant doesn't think we've been affected by any algo changes, at least not to any significant degree. My only explanation for this possibly anomaly is: decrease in the use of the KW terms in search over time (how to determine?) generalized increase in PPC instead of organic search driving traffic possibility that Adv Web Rankings is no longer accurately collecting SERP rankings Does anyone have any other thoughts or considerations that might explain the decline in traffic, despite maintenance or improvement in rankings? Thanks.

Sub-Links of Organic SERP
I would like to know if you can modify (or suggest) the sub-links under an organic listing. For Example: Main Link/Title = COMPANY NAME - What We Do.... Sub-Links (popular pages within site) currently include links like: Locations / Catalog Request / Bestsellers Is it possible to suggest other pages as sub-links or do the search engines determine these? Please advise, and thanks in advance....
