Migrating to a tag-driven global website - Need opinions!

We currently have a global site that is set up this way:
- Subfolders to designate countries.
- Content in same language is re-published on other country websites.
Since we are re-launching at the end of the year, we are doing away with re-publishing content on different country sites and will just maintain a single copy of our content (to be populated on different pages using content tags). We are planning on doing this so that there is no need to apply href-lang tags on our content.
My questions:
- Is maintaining just a single instance of an article good for a global website?
- What are the possible complications that may come up from this approach?
- Since there is only one version of the article that is being indexed, is a rel-canonical tag even needed?
- Should href-lang tag still be applied to high level pages (homepage, etc) to ensure that the correct homepage shows up in the appropriate geography?

I have similar questions. It sounds like you are posting articles in the main language it was written in and not doing any geo-targeting. Is that right? I'm not sure because you mention "the correct homepage shows up in the appropriate geography."
If an article is written in Portuguese, you aren't translating it?

Am a little unclear on your query but it seems you are moving to a single page - per article platform and trying to rank internationally. So for one unique page you wish or expect that same page to rank for example in the USA as well as Ukraine.. is that correct? Assume if they find the page from Ukraine they use google translate... etc.
To be clear is that what you are asking?
If that is the case it will not work. Effect digital sums it up pretty well. T

If you are talking about having a single URL which generates differently translated content based upon where the user is from, it's a terrible idea and god-awful for SEO. Have seen so many sites with single-URL multi-content builds perform erratically and terribly. Usually the 'quick and easy way' to 'get out of doing proper SEO' is the path to absolute ruin
Google only crawls from one data centre at once, so if they crawl from Spain and see the Spanish content, they will assume that's all there is there and you have just changed it. So your rankings will fly around like a pinwheel and never really amount to anything
Hreflangs and site build out is the best way, anything quick and dirty is usually destined to kill your multi-regional rankings (dead)

International website sharing with .com/.au/.uk
I have a small business in the United States and would like to copy our main website for my international partners. My website is a .com. I think that their domains will end in their country codes: .au and .uk. We are open to using different domains. We plan to share blog articles and other content, but do not wish to be penalized for duplication. I have tried to read articles on this topic, but am unfamiliar with a lot of the terms. Soon we will do a website migration .com.br to .com/pt-br. Wi will do this migration when we have with lower traffic. Trying to follow Google Guidelines, applying the 301 redirect, sitemap etc... Our website is very big and we are ranking with more then 400 keys in all the tshirts industry in the UK.

Best Practice for International Website with Two Versions
I have a client in the medical industry, and the company's product has been approved in various countries in Europe yet is awaiting approval in the US. That means we can share certain information in some countries that we cannot share in the US. Therefore, we plan to use an initial landing page that will ask what country the user is in (using a drop-down list to choose from if not located in the US) and then push him or her to the appropriate version of the site. Site structure for multi-lingual hotel website (subfolder names)
Hi there superMozers! I´ve read a quite a few questions about multi-lingual sites but none answered my doubt / idea, so here it is: I´m re-designing an old website for a hotel in 4 different languages which are all** hosted on the same .com domain** as follows: example.com/english/ for english example.com/espanol/ for **spanish ** example.com/francais/ for french example.com/portugues/ for portuguese While doing keyword search, I have noticed that many travel agencies separate geographical areas by folders, therefor an **agency pomoting beach hotels in South America **will have a structure as follows: travelagency.com/argentina-beach-hotels/ travelagency.com/peru-beach-hotels/ and they list hotels in each folder, therefor benefiting from those keywords to rank ahead of many independent hotels sites from those areas. What **I would like to **do -rather than just naming those folders with the traditional /en/ for english or /fr/ for french etc- is take advantage of this extra language subfolder to_´include´_ important keywords in the name of the subfolders in the following way (supposing the we have a beach hotel in Argentina): example.com/argentina-beach-hotel/ for english example.com/hotel-playa-argentina/ for **spanish ** example.com/hotel-plage-argentine/ for french example.com/hotel-praia-argentina/ for portuguese Note that the same keywords are used in the name of the folder, but translated into the language the subfolders are. In order to make things clear for the search engines I would specify the language in the html for each page. My doubt is whether google or other search engines may consider this as ´stuffing´ although most travel agencies do it in their site structure. Any Mozers have experience with this, any idea on how search engines may react, or if they could penalise the site? Thanks in advance!
