Redesign Just Starting - Should I Leave The Previous Incomplete Site or Setup A Temporary Holding Page and Redirect Previous URL'S?
-
Hi All
I've picked up a new website project and wanted to ask about the best way to proceed with the current site during the development process.
The current site is incomplete although it has been live for a while and has over 80 pages in the sitemap. Link to site https://tinyurl.com/ychwftup
The business owner wants to take down the current site and simply add a landing page stating "new website coming soon".
From an SEO perspective, am I better to keep the current site live until the new site is ready? Or would it not make any difference if I setup the landing page and add 301 redirects from each page in the sitemap to the landing page.
Many Thanks In Advance For Any Assistance

Hi Paddy
Thanks for getting back to me, that has confirmed my thinking, much appreciated.
All the best with your work

Hi there,
In short, it's usually highly recommended that during a migration, you keep the old website live right up until the point that the new one launches. At that point, you put the necessary 301 redirects in place and launch the new website.
If you go the other route and take the site down and add a landing page as you've described, it's almost certain that you'll lose any traffic that the current website is getting. This is because any pages that are currently driving traffic will not exist any more. I'd highly advise against this!
The only caveat would be that if the current site is not getting any traffic at all at the moment, then there is an argument that you have nothing to lose by taking it down. However, I'd still advise to keep it up and redirect the pages at the time of the migration because this will help preserve any existing equity that those pages have.
I hope that helps!
Paddy

URL Structure's Effect on SEO
Hello all, I have a client who currently has a very poor URL structure. As it stands, their URLs are formatted in the following manner: http://www.domain.com/category/subcategory/page In all my years of SEO, however, I have always tried to implement the following format: http://www.domain.com/category/page The web designer for this particular project has been very reluctant to change the structure for obvious reasons, but I'm convinced that by modifying the URL structure, SEO will improve. I am correct in thinking this? Likewise, if I am able to get the URL structure changed, what do I need to look out for to make sure we don't lose any traction for our keyword terms? Any and all insight/suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading!

H Tags for an Events Page
I wanted to get the thoughts of people here about how to best structure an events listing page for SEO. I have a list of events, all with dates, event titles, location name, city and zip. What I do currently is listed below. I also show a version for how I could revise it, but it would require me to duplicate the event date on the page. Any ideas, suggestions or best practice examples you can point me to would be greatly appreciated. Current Structure <state>Events - H1 Tag

Friday, December 5, 2014 - H2 Tag
Event Title 1 - H3
Location Name, City, State - P Tags Event Title 2 - H3
Location Name, City, State - P Tags</state> I was wondering if I would see better results by doing the following instead. The benefits I see of this approach are the event titles are h2 instead of h3 tags and the con I see is duplicating the event dates <state>Events - H1 Tag</state>
Event Title 1 - H2

www.myname.com I watched the "White Board Friday" video on creating your own website based on your name. Can anyone explain why this would be a good concept for me? I'm currently involved in 1. Marketing for the company I work for 2. Sales for the company I work for 3. Affiliate Marketing/ Site Creation as side projects 4. SEO as a free-lance part-time offering 5. PPC & Web-marketing as a free-lance part-time offering Would my personal page be to showcase all of this? why is it beneficial for SEO?

Display a message after 301 redirect.
I know this one is a little more technical than pure SEO, but it somewhat ties in. I'm redirecting 2 sites to one. The companies have combined, and I've imported all their content that has been created, and the url mapping is set up correctly. So it currently is set up like this: A.com --> C.com
Web Design | | WilliamBay
A.com/blogpost-1 --> C.com/blogpost-1 B.com --> C.com B.com/blogpost-20 --> C.com/blogpost-20 What i would like is some method a redirect when landing at C.com or C.com/blogpost-XX. And in turn display a message in a DIV so I can style it. And yes, I have nothing better to do on a Friday night 🙂0 -
What can this charity site do to improve SEO?
Hello wise ones, We have been working with the charity Volunteers of America to create a new site for their car donation program at carshelpingpeople.org They are a national charity with extensive local programs run by regional affiliates, so the site is divided into a small national section linked to Regional Affiliate sections. You get to the regional sections either by entering your zip code or clicking on your state in the bottom nav of the national pages. Right now we have developed regional sections for Michigan, Nevada, Maryland, Washington D.C., New Jersey, Delaware and the Philadelphia area. The site is about 2 1/2 months old, and while our conversion rate is pretty good (7%) our organic search ranking isn't improving as quickly as we'd like to see. Car donation is a very competitive space, and we would appreciate any advice on how to improve the SEO of the site. Thanks so much.

Two URLs with same content
We recently had a client who own multiple brands switch from having multiple urls to having a single domain with multiple sub domains. I've posted an example below to better explain. My question is the original url is still functional, so there are two urls with identical content, yet I haven't been getting a duplicate content error. Also, would a rel canonical link be beneficial in this case since the duplicate content is on two separate domains? My thoughts were to put a 301 redirect on the original pages so they permanently forward to the new sub-domain format. Is this the best course of action? If not, what would you recommend? Example: Original URLs

www.example1.com
www.example2.com
www.example3.com
www.parentcompany.com New URLs
example1.parentcompany.com
example2.parentcompany.com
example3.parentcompany.com
www.parentcompany.com Let me know if this I need to clarify anything in better detail.
Thanks in advance!0 -
Combining web pages and it's affects on SEO?
We are looking into amending a website we are working on to try and combine 2 or 3 current pages onto one page. This site is similar to an estate agents site and currently has images, map, floor plan sub pages etc. Can anyone tell me, if we were to combine these pages and include the above details on one page, how that would affect the current search engine rankings?
