Slash at end of URL causing Google crawler problems
-
Hello,
We are having some problems with a few of our pages being crawled by Google and it looks like the slash at the end of the URL is causing the problem. Would appreciate any pointers on this.
We have a redirect in place that redirects the "no slash" URL to the "slash" URL for all pages. The obvious solution would be to try turning this off, however, we're unable to figure our where this redirect is coming from. There doesn't appear to be an instruction in our .htaccess file doing this, and we've also tried using "DirectorySlash Off" in the .htaccess file, but that doesn't work either. (if it makes a difference it is a 302 redirect doing this, not a 301)
If we can't get the above to work, then the other solution would be to somehow reconfigure the page so that it is recognizable with the slash at the end by Google. However, we're not sure how this would be done.
I think the quickest solution would be to turn off the "add slash" redirect. Any ideas on where this command might be hiding, and how to turn it off would be greatly appreciated. Or any tips from people who have had similar crawl problems with google and any workarounds would be great!
Thanks!

Satchmo does this automatically - http://www.satchmoproject.com/docs/dev/configuration.html?highlight=trailing slash - however, as far as I can see from the documentation and forums there's no way to disable it
I'm unfamiliar with Satchmo though, hit up the Google Group - http://groups.google.com/group/satchmo-users/topics - and ask there.

Thanks, Ryan -- we're taking a look into this right now, and will let you know how it goes!

I think we should rule out the possibility that your CMS or a SEO extension or other add-on for your CMS is adjusting your URLs.
Can you add a page to your site at your root that is not part of your CMS? Drop in a test.html file and see what happens.

Hi Ryan -- thanks for your help.
We're hosted on a VPS, running Linux/Apache. We use Satchmo as our CMS/shopping engine. As far as I know, we haven't put explicit redirect instructions into the CMS. Do you think the CMS may be adding the slash?

What type of server is your site hosted on? Is it Windows or Apache? Is it shared hosting, VPS or dedicated?
What type of site do you have? Is there a CMS or other software which may modify or rewrite URLs?

Why does my mobile site have a "?mobiRedirect=1" string at the end of the URL?
Hello, When trying to access my site from a smart-phone, I'm getting a redirected to the mobile version (which is correct), however at the end of the URL there is a redirect string that shows every time. I'm not sure why its its showing or how it automatically gets appended to the end of the URL each time. How can I configure my mobile site to prevent the ?mobiRedirect=1" from showing? For example, if you search for "Columbus Regional Health" on Google with a smart-phone, the first result should be for www.crh.org. If you click that, you should get redirected to www.crh.org/mobile , however its displaying the URL as http://www.crh.org/mobile/default.aspx?mobiRedirect=1 Does anyone know how to fix this? Thank you,

Google Places, Google Plus, Oh my!
Ok - So I am in the position to try and clean up the current Google places nightmare for a company. Right now there is about 3 or 4 different google places listings for them that they have no control over. So here is what I did: 1. I took control of them all by verifying via phone and confirmed all of them. 2. I suspended all the listings but 1 3. I edited the one listing to be accurate and complete.

Then I waited, and waited... A month later, the old listings are still up and none of the changes to the one listing have been made. Today it gets a bit more complicated. Today I created a Google+ page for the business which seems like it may end up adding yet ANOTHER Google Places listing, is that correct? They are sending a post card to verify, but I have the page all set up ready to go and plan on tying it to the website. I am not exactly sure what my specific question is, but I am looking for any advice anyone has on the best way to go about this situation. Thank you in advance!0 -
What does the Google Crawler see when crawling this page?
If you look at this page http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/t/49/61/185/730/Batteries. You will see we have a vehicle filter on it. Right now you only see a picture of a battery and some bad text that needs to be updated ( We just hired a copywriter!). Our question is when google crawls this site will thy just see this or will they see all the products that appear after you pick a "machine type" "make" "model" and "year" Any help would be great. Right now we think it just sees this main page how we have set things up; however, we know that the crawler is also crawling some ajax. We just want to be sure of things.

Will a "blog=example "parameter at the end of my URLs affect google's crawling them?
For example, I'm wondering if www.example.com/blog/blog-post is better than www.example.com/blog/blog-post?blog=example? I'm currently using the www.example.com/blog/blog-post?blog=example structure as our canonical page for content. I'm also wondering, if the parameter doesn't affect crawling, if it would hurt rankings in any way. Thanks!

Hello~ People! I have a questions regarding eTag. I know Google support If-Modified-HTTP-Header aka last modified header. I used eTag instead of last modified header. It seems like Google does support, yet here is my questions. code.google suggest as following. GData-Version: 2.0

ETag: "C0QBRXcycSp7ImA9WxRVFUk." but I used etag as following . ETag: "10cd712-eaae-b279a480" I didnt include "GData-Version: 2.0". is this mean Google may not support my etag?0 -
URL rewrite question
I have adjusted a setting in my CMS and the URL's have changed from http://www.ensorbuilding.com/section.php/43/1/firestone-epdm-rubbercover-flat-roofing to http://www.ensorbuilding.com/section/43/1/firestone-epdm-rubbercover-flat-roofing This has changed all the URL's on the website not just this example. As you can see , the .php extension has now been removed but people can still access the .php version of the page. What I want is a site-wide 301 redirect but can not figure out how to implement it? Any help is appreciated 🙂 Thanks

This is not a question but something to share.
