Reusing an already 301 redirected URL for a very important keyword
-
I have a question about reusing an already 301 redirected URL
Till now I never reused an URLs that has been already redirected with a 301 redirect. However, I just started working on a website where in past they created a lot of 301 redirects without thinking about the future, and now certain URLs, that are currently redirected with a 301, would be very useful (exact match) and needed (for some of the most important keywords for this specific business), to maintain an optimal, homogeneous and "beautiful" URL structure.
Has any of you ever reused a URL that was previously redirected with a 301 redirect?
If yes what are your experiences with it? Can content on the reused URL (that was previously 301 redirected and than the redirect removed) normally rank if the page is reestablished and the redirect is removed (and you do great content, on page, internal linking, backlinking, .... ) or is such an URL risky / not recommended / "burned" forever and not recommended to be reused again... especially for very important keywords since it present the exact match ?!
Thank you very much for all your help!

@Tracey_Evans agreed. You should also consider that browsers will cache data for websites they visit @moz46y
If a user visits a URL that returns a 301 status code it will remember this. If the user tries to access that redirect URL in the future the browser can just take them to the version that returns a 200 status code (in the name of efficiency).
This can be undone, but it requires the user clearing their browser's cache.
Not sure if it would be an issue in your use case but it's worthwhile knowing!
Cheers,

@moz46y
Reusing a URL that has already been redirected with a 301 redirect is indeed feasible, but it requires careful consideration. When you remove the 301 redirect and re-establish the original URL with new content, search engines like Google need time to re-crawl and re-index this URL. The success of this approach largely depends on the quality and relevance of the new content. If the content is high-quality, relevant to the keyword, and offers a good user experience, there's a good chance that the URL can regain its ranking potential. It's important to focus on on-page SEO, internal linking, and backlinking to aid in quicker re-indexing and potentially restore the URL’s authority. However, there are risks involved. The URL may not regain its previous ranking quickly, especially for competitive keywords. The history of redirects might cause search engines to take more time to trust the URL again. Therefore, it's crucial to monitor its performance closely using tools like Google Search Console to track changes in ranking and traffic. If the URL is crucial for very important keywords and you're concerned about potential risks, you might consider creating a new, similarly optimized URL as a safer alternative. In summary, while reusing a previously 301 redirected URL is possible and can be successful, it's a strategy that requires a strategic approach, careful implementation, and continuous monitoring.

Is 301 redirects a deal breaker for Migrating content or moving to new software?
I have this forum with about 2 million posts for 16 years on root of the domain. I am looking to switch softwares but the top ones won’t help setup 301 redirects. But I can still migrate all my members and all my content (threads/posts), would Google still reindex all our content or if we don’t setup redirects would it really kill our entire traffic for a long time or maybe just a month or so? I really want to migrate to software that isn’t forum based but rather something that offers courses, chat, live video streaming, subscription based etc. and this is the only way to do so OR to set it up on an entirely new domain OR subdomain but to me that is like starting all over from scratch? I could archive the forum to read only and set it up on subdomain or another root domain - then on the archived forum setup banners and a pop up linking to the new site or new subdomain? . This is such a hard decision for us as the current forum we have had for so many years has lost members posting from 1k a day to just a handful a day, our fb group though gets 1k a day so I’m trying to revive a site into something more modern and has all the training features we can offer as well.

Put a 301 from /main to home page, now I'm panicking
Hi, Our website is 10 years old, but I only noticed last night we had a https://curveball-media.co.uk/main page which has some badly formatted copy on. I redirected (301) to the home page https://curveball-media.co.uk/ Then I had a slight panic that maybe this was the wrong thing to do and it should be like it was with the home page and the /main page. Should I have left it or did I do the right thing?

301 Redirection, then 200 status for specific webpage
Hello everyone, Would like to seek your advice. Our company classified web pages currently set 301 redirection for product listing (expired) -> relevant category pages. At the same time, remove this webpage URL from the sitemap as well. In some cases, users reactivated the expired ads. In this case, the page will become status 200 again, also re-included in the sitemap again. Wondering if Search engines able to pick up and index the same webpage again? Thanks in advance!

301 Redirects
Hello, All. Hopefully this will be an easy question for some of you. I have a (WordPress) site with the format of: http://www.site.com/folder-old/page-old/ I have since re-named both the parent and sub-folders to (example): http://www.site.com/folder-new/page-new/ Everything is working well EXCEPT I am also trying to redirect visitors from the old URL/structure to the new. I have a 301 redirect setup as the following: Redirect 301 /folder-old/page-old/ http://www.site.com/folder-new/page-new/ -- But it doesn't seem to be working. Not sure if this is something finicky with WordPress or if the redirect is incorrect. Thank you.

How best to fix 301 redirect problems
Hi all Wondering if anyone could help out with this one. Roger Bot crawler has just performed it's weekly error crawl on my site and I appear to have 18,613 temp redirect problems!! Rather, the same 1 problem 18,613 times. My site is a magento store and the errors it is giving me is due to the wishlist feature on the site. For example, it is trying to crawl links such as index.php/wishlist/index/add/product/29416/form_key/DBDSNAJOfP2YGgfW (which would normally add the item to one's wishlist). However, because Roger isn't logged into the website it means that all these requests are being sent to the login url with the page title of Please Enable Cookies. Would the best way to fix this be to enable wishlists for guests? I would rather not do that but cannot think of another way of fixing it. Any other Magento people come across this issue? Thanks, Carl

301 redirect blog posts from old URL to new one
I moved a wordpress blog from domain.com to domain.com/blog . I want to redirect the links in google from the old domain.com to the new one, but I also want to put a new site/application at domain.com..so I'm thinking an .htaccess 301 redirect at the root wouldn't work. Any tips?

Not sure which URL to use for 301 redirect
A client has new website design completed by another developer, was launched in April of this year. No 301 redirect was set up so duplicate content is an issue. Client has had a website with same domain name for about 10 years, but has not had any SEO work completed before or since his new site design. For non-www there are 6 referring links - 1 considered to have authority, for www there are also 6 but 3 considered to have authority. More links seem to coming from www than non-www. But for one of the clients keywords they are ranked #1 for their area and that links to their non-www address. And even though no redirects set up by developer, non-www has had far more visits according to Google Analytics. So many basics that still need to be done for site: no meta-descriptions on any page, H1 and page titles could use keywords, call to action moved above fold, etc. Considering this is a new site, and new SEO work and many more inbound links needed, does it matter which address I redirect to? _Cindy Barnard
