Do sites really need a 404 page?

We have people posting broken links to our site is this looking us link juice as they link to 404 pages. We could redirect to the homepage or just render the home page content, in both cases we can still display a clear page not found message. Is this legal (white hat).

Also, some site owners will run link checking tools on their sites that look at their off-site links and see if any return 404s. If you're not returning a 404, the site owners may not know (via an automated tool) that the link is broken.

Yes, you should have a real 404 page.
- You'll help the people that follow their links - you should have a list of links that they might be looking for - and a search box. Remember, you want these visitors to stay on your site, not bounce.
- Google wants you to have one. In fact many bots will test your site has a 404 page that returns the correct status (404 of course). Make sure you test yours. Many incorrectly return 200 (ok) status.
If you want to keep (some of) the linkjuice, and you know where they want to go, you would 301 redirect to the correct destination.

My WP website got attack by malware & now my website site:www.example.ca shows about 43000 indexed page in google.
Hi All My wordpress website got attack by malware last week. It affected my index page in google badly. my typical site:example.ca shows about 130 indexed pages on google. Now it shows about 43000 indexed pages. I had my server company tech support scan my site and clean the malware yesterday. But it still shows the same number of indexed page on google.

When rogerbot tried to crawl my site it gets a 404\. Why?
When rogerbot tries to craw my site it tries http://website.com. My website then tries to redirect to http://www.website.com and is throwing a 404 and ends up not getting crawled. It also throws a 404 when trying to read my robots.txt file for some reason. We allow rogerbot user agent so unsure whats happening here. Is there something weird going on when trying to access my site without the 'www' that is causing the 404? Any insight is helpful here. Thanks,

2 pages ranking for same keyword.. Need some advice on what to do.
Here's my question. When I first started my website we started Using keyword anchor building links To my homepage . Over the years Our business has expanded to more than just baby headbands. I now have a baby headband page. When tracking my rankings. I sometimes see Both pages in Google for the same keyword. Other days I do not see both of them. My question is Should I continue building links and keyword anchor text for the home page Or should I switch them and start building keyword-rich anchor text for my baby headband page. I'm just wondering if the Search engine is confused by the two. When searching for the keyword baby headbands. I will sometimes show up for eight and nine. 8 is my home page and 9 is for the baby headband page. I have always shown up for the keyword "baby Headbands" for my home page.

Indexing pages content that is not needed
Hi All, I have a site that has articles and a side block that shows interesting articles in a column block. While we google for a keyword i can see the page but the meta description is picked from the side block "interesting articles" and not the actual article in the page. How can i deny indexing that block alone Thanks

Used Machines Site - Should I delete sold machines pages?
I´ll start posting in a wordpress blog used machines (excavators and wheel loaders) from a local company. They buy used machines every day and sell machines every day also. When They sold a machine should I: A) Edit the page with a sold machine text and show similar machines? B) Change the category of the post ( to something like sold machines)? I am trying to correct error report of duplicate page content. However I am unable to find in over 100 blogs the page which contains similar content to the page SEOmoz reported as having similar content is my only option to just dlete the blog page?

I need help on web page load time, its very bad!
