How would you optimise a news website?
-
I have been asked for advice on how to optimise a news website whose keywords, almost by definition, change every day according to the articles being written.
How would you, for example, do SEO for the NYtimes.com?
Great content and subsequent links I'm sure take care of themselves. Just onsite then? If so.... what?

I have the same question and i would love to hear more ideas.

Hi,
Thanks for the response. This is a financial news website with global coverage - so ever so slightly niche, but a serious player within that niche.
With that in mind, I guess it's about just about making sure the site is crawled efficiently and as you say, making sure that it's meeting all webmaster guidelines best practices...
Wow... would never of thought my SEO advice to someone would never involve keyword research / keyword related optimisation....
Thanks again.

Hey Chris!
Great question, and since I work for a news organization, I'm happy to answer!
The good news is, depending on the stories you're covering, there may not be a lot of competition for your keywords. For instance, if it's primarily local news, you may only be competing with 3-4 major players, and at that point it really just comes down to the strength of your link profile, the unique content, and title practices (by title practice, I mean making sure your keywords are located in the title, etc.).
If you are working for a media source like the NY Times, the hard work is already done. The NY Times is a recognized authority and is included as a source by the aggregator monsters suich as Google news/blogs, Yahoo news, etc. The only issue you'd fac ein this instance is keeping up with best SEO practices and maintaining the site.
I guess the question is: are you working for an established source, or is this a new site? Is it a global news source, a national news source, or a local source?
Best,
W

Website Not Performing after switch to HTTPS
We recently switched our client's website to HTTPS but after the move, we've experienced a huge decrease in rankings (off the map), and traffic. Our metas for the homepage are not being picked up by Google, although it was appearing correctly before the switch. We've implemented all redirects, resubmitted URL to Google, and updated GSC. GSC is also reporting errors in our XML stating there are no URLs to crawl. Has anyone had any issues similar? What do you all recommend? Help greatly appreciated

Google News - How to be featured in different countries with same domain
Hello, I am sure I am not the first to go through this but I did not find the answers in the previous Q&As. So, sorry if this question is bit redundant for some folks. We have a site in English with readers in multiple english speaking countries. How to make www.mysite.com accepted in Google news for US, UK, India, Australia and Canada at the same time? It is currently accepted in the US but, as I stated above, we do have a strong audience in other countries. I have read about sub-domains, but wouldn't it be considered duplicated content if I had the exact same article in different sub-domains? We are talking about creating 4 copies on mysite.com just to be added to Google News in those specific countries www.mysite.com/same-article/

Linking to External Websites?
Is it good to link external websites from every page. Since, the on-page grader shows there should be one link pointing to an external source. I have a website that can point to an external website from every page using the brand name of the specific site like deal sites do have. Is it worth having external link on every page, of-course with a no-follow tag?

What To Do For A Website That is Mainly Images
I have a website that is a desktop wallpaper script. People can come and upload 100's of wallpapers to share with the community. This is were the problems comes in. Files are normally called 27636dark.jpg or whatever and come with no description. This leads to 2 things. no text content that google can use to know what the page/image is about. Meta descriptions, URL's just look like spam. Example: /car-wallpapers/7636dark.jpg If a text description was added, it would still only be like "Green Trees in the distance". Which as you may guess, with 1,000's of wallpapers... would end up having a lot of descriptions the same. Is there any advice for sites that focus on image driven content?
