Google Directory vs DMOZ
-
What is the difference between the Google Directory and the DMOZ if any?
-
And now Google has shut down the Google Directory, so it's just DMOZ. http://searchengineland.com/final-nail-in-the-google-directory-coffin-86505
-
The ODP synchronises data out to sites that use its data periodically. If I remember rightly it can be as long as 6 months between updates ( don't quote me on that though) but it certainly isn't in real time!
-
The reason I had originally asked is I performed a search in Google on the keywords "electronic contract manufacturing" the fifth ranked site was The Google Directory(http://www.google.com/Top/Business/Electronics_and_Electrical/Contract_Manufacturing/), next I did a search in Google on the keywords "electronic contract manufacturing dmoz" and the number one site was the DMOZ for that category (http://www.dmoz.org/Business/Electronics_and_Electrical/Contract_Manufacturing/).
There seems to be a slight difference here. And also, I got a company listed in the DMOZ for that category, they show up in the DMOZ but now the Google Directory. So it doesn't look like they even share results.
-
Interesting, never knew this. When did they change the name?
-
They are basically the same. They use the ODP (Open Direcotry Project). The Google directory apparently uses Google's pagerank alogirthm within the categories.
When searching for Google Directory on Google you can see this as the site description:
**_"Google Directory - _**Searchable directory based on the ODP, combined with their own PageRank algorithm within each category."
-
They're one and the same, fundamentally. DMOZ was the original name, it was later renamed to the Open Directory Project. Google Directory has google search technology layered on top of the ODP data.

January 10, 2017 - Intrusive interstitials Google Update
Hi all, As everyone is most likely aware, Google have recently announced that if a site has intrusive intersitals that push the main content below the fold, will be downgraded in the SERP's from January 10th. At the moment we have a range of international sites, .ca, .com.au, .co.uk, .fr etc - if a user from a UK IP goes to a .ca site - a country switcher dialog will appear. I am aware that this may affect our sites performance in mobile search when the update comes out - however, if we block Google from seeing this - will they still pick it up? Thanks.

Google Adding / Manipulating Page Meta Titles?
We have a client who is experiencing some heavy google modification to the title tags being displayed on the search engine. It is adding "- 0 Reviews" to an ecommerce site. Obviously a bad start. There were no instances of these keywords anywhere on any of these pages, header tag or otherwise (on only a handful of the affected pages there was a single commented out image with an alt tag 0 reviews - but it was commented out and since removed) We have attempted to rewrite the title multiple times and it will modify the title but still include the non-relevant addition. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this?

Hi Peeps, Hope someone can shed a light on this and show a guidance if possible. We are going to move our sites to shopify and shopify's URL's cannot be customized to match exactly like our current URLs. What steps do I need to take so google knows the URL's are changed. Domain will be the same. Thank you in advanced.

Why am I getting different Google SERP result for same keywords?
Hi Mozzers, I have noticed recently that Google (.com.au) has been serving up different SERP results for the same keywords. For example, one of our main keywords is "Car Loan". One result will show our site as ranking #5 organically from 242,000,000 results. A refresh of this search will then result in our site not ranking at all from 133,000,000 results. We have been noticing this happen only in the last few days & more frustrating is that Google is throwing up the SERP from 133,000,000 results more frequently. Would anyone know why this is occurring? And what can we do, if anything, to ensure we are shown regardless of how many results Google calls from? Is it from recent algo update & will it settle down over time? Any help would be greatly appreciated. (Just to add - I'm not gogged in to Google when completing this test & regularly clear cookies etc so I don't believe its a personalised search issue)

Are multiple domains for my website hurting my Google ranking?
Hello, I currently have two domains showing up in google search: shwoodshop.com shop.shwoodshop.com These domains are currently ranked in the #2 and #3 spot, however my page is much more trafficked than the current #1 ranking. I am wondering if the fact that I have two domains competing for the #1 spot is hurting my search ranking. If so, what is the best way to remedy this issue and get back my #1 spot? I'm rather new to SEO and teaching myself as I go, so I appreciate the feedback!
