Crawl Diagnostics bringing 20k+ errors as duplicate content due to session ids
-
Signed up to the trial version of Seomoz today just to check it out as I have decided I'm going to do my own SEO rather than outsource it (been let down a few times!). So far I like the look of things and have a feeling I am going to learn a lot and get results.
However I have just stumbled on something. After Seomoz dones it's crawl diagnostics run on the site (www.deviltronics.com) it is showing 20,000+ plus errors. From what I can see almost 99% of this is being picked up as erros for duplicate content due to session id's, so i am not sure what to do!
I have done a "site:www.deviltronics.com" on google and this certainly doesn't pick up the session id's/duplicate content. So could this just be an issue with the Seomoz bot. If so how can I get Seomoz to ignore these on the crawl?
Can I get my developer to add some code somewhere.
Help will be much appreciated. Asif

Hello Tom and Asif,
First of all Tom thanks for the excellent blog post re google docs.
We are also using the Jshop platform for one of our sites. And am not sure whether it is working correctly in terms of SEO. I just ran an seomoz crawl of the site and found that every single link in the list has a rel canonical in it, even the ones with session id's.
Here is an example:
www.strictlybeautiful.com/section.php/184/1/davines_shampoo/d112a41df89190c3a211ec14fdd705e9
www.strictlybeautiful.com/section.php/184/1/davines_shampoo
As Asif has pointed out the Jshop people say they have programmed it so that google cannot pick up the session ids, firstly is that even possible? And if I assume thats not an issue then what about the fact that every single page on the site has a rel canonical link on it?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Asif, here's the page with the information on the SEOmoz bot.

Thanks for the reply Tom. Spoke to our developer he has told me that the website platform (Jshop) does not show session ID's to the search engines so we are ok on that side. However as it doesn't recognise the Seomoz bot it shows it the session ID's. Do you know where I can find info on the Seomoz bot so we can see what it identifies itself as so it can be added to the list of recognised spiders?
Thanks

Hi Asif!
Firstly - I'd suggest that as soon as possible you address the core problem - the use of session ids in the URL. There are not many upsides to the approach and there are many downsides. That it doesn't show up with the site: command doesn't mean it isn't having a negative impact.
In the meantime, you should add a rel=canonical tag to all the offending pages pointing to the URL without the session id. Secondly, you could use robots.txt to block the SEOmoz bot from crawling pages with session ids, but it may affect the bots ability to crawl the site if all the links it is presented with are with session ids - which takes us back around to fixing the core problem.
Hope this helps a little!

Moz and HubSpot SSL - crawl error?
I'm getting an error message when Moz tries to crawl my site, however when I check in Google Search Console, they return no errors. Our site is hosted on HubSpot. Is Moz still having trouble crawling HubSpot sites that have enabled their SSL? I read an article that this should have been corrected in early 2017, but I'm getting an error.

What's more valuable: new content or optimizing old content
We are a niche legacy print publication that's been around for close to 20 years. Recently, we combined several old sites in one new responsive site. We have over 7,000 articles -many of which are evergreen and can be repurposed when needed. Most of the old pieces although published, have not been optimized for SEO. However, as we create new pieces, we optimize them for search and social and they tend to get more organic traffic. Where we're torn is on how much we should balance our limited editorial resources between cleaning up and optimizing our extensive archive to improve our organic reach, vs. pumping out new original pieces each week. I realize that without a lot of data the answers will be varied - I guess I'm looking for a best practices approach for content publishers. If it helps at all, our main conversion goal is selling subscriptions to our print and digital publications. We know that organic traffic tends to be more engaged than our social referrals. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the magazine fulfilment business, it's tough to know which channels convert better. Thanks!

Crawl Diagnostics
My site was crawled last night and found 10,000 errors due to a Robot.txt change implemented last week in between Moz crawls. This is obviously very bad so we have corrected it this morning. We do not want to wait until next Monday (6 days) to see if the fix has worked. How do we force a Moz crawl now? Thanks

404 Errors generating in WP
Our crawl reports are generating back several 404 errors for pages with urls that look like: /category/consulting/page/5/ The tag changes, the page number changes, but the result is always the same: A big glaring 404. Our sites are built on WordPress Multi-site, and I am fairly certain this issue is on the WP end, but I can't figure out why it is generating pages out to infinity, essentially, from the tags and categories. It is worse on some sites than others, but is happening across the board (my initial concern was that it might be a theme issue, but that does not seem to be the case). If anyone has run into this issue and knows a fix, you're insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I want to create a report of only de duplicate content pages as a csv file so i can create a script to canonicalize them.
I want to create a report of only de duplicate content pages as a csv file so i can create a script to canonicalize them. So i get something like: http://example.com/page1, http://example.com/page2, http://example.com/page3, http://example.com/page4, Because I now have to open each in "Issue: Duplicate Page Content", and this takes a lot of time. The same for duplicate page title.

False Pro reporting of duplicate titles
I am testing Pro. About 250 pages of content at my website. Pro says ALL of my pages have duplicate titles., but when I click on details, they display as unique titles. Ie: first page of results of Pro is as follows. While the content of my website is on one major topic the title meta tags are NOT identical. Is this an issue with Pro, or is Pro looking at something other than the title meta tags? Please advise ? Company Name in Page Title creating thousands of "Duplicate Page Title" errors
I am new, and I just got back my crawl results (after a week or more). The first thing I noticed is that the "duplicate page title" is in the thousands, my urls and page titles are different. The only thing I can see is that our company name is at appended to the name of every title. I did search and found one other person with this problem, but no answer was given. Can anyone offer some advice? This doesn't seem right... Thanks,
