Please help with SEO keyword research
-
Hi Moz community,
I would like to request your collective wisdom. I'm new to SEO and putting together an SEO research and strategy document for the employment service I work for.
Have solid skills in Google Adwords and have ran a campaign over the last two years with excellent results. But this SEO thing is a whole new world! That's why who better to turn to than the leading community for SEO professionals? Any support, advice, tips would be most welcomed appreciated.
It's an employment service and I've got a list of keywords. For example, here are some of the action words I thought could be useful:
<colgroup><col width="215"> <col width="91"> <col width="65"></colgroup>
[find staff] 0.79 73 [find employees] 0.97 73 [looking for staff] 0.94 58 [looking for staff] 0.94 58 [staff wanted] 0.62 58 [looking for employees] 0.94 46 [look for work] 0.77 36 [looking for workers] 0.93 36 [find workers] 0.91 36 [employee search] 0.72 28 [staff search] 0.37 28 [find an employee] 0.79 22 [search for employees] 0.71 12 [find a worker] 0.66 12 [how to find employees] 0.71 12 My questions:
Where to from here? If this was a Google Adwords campaign I would place the words in, create ad copy and test response. But with SEO, are these words useful?
Can you target all of these words with SEO - or am I better finding words with higher volume?
How many words should I be looking to target? For example, am I only trying to find the 5 or 10 highest volume words, or is it important to target lots of words with SEO?
Is it just one set of keywords per page, or can I target all the above keywords on one page?
I'm a bit lost. Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Hi Simon,
Thank you for sharing. Read through the beginners guide and this is starting to become clearer! Yes that's correct, the target audience is employers looking for employees. I want them to come to the website and register their staff needs with an online form (free because we're a non profit).
Thank you for the advice to look for more generic keywords with higher volumes. I'll continue searching.
Targeting keywords, ok, so it's a good approach to target a combination of generic and long-tail:
-One topic per page with one main keyword. Also supported with secondary keywords (2-3).
I'll continue searching within these guidelines.
Thanks again.
Jason

Hi Philip,
Thank you for sharing your expertise! Ok, so create blog posts with the long tailed words as a way to bring in some of these keywords. I'm also in the process of setting up a blog and will start to plan for this method. Awesome! Thank you.

Those keywords you listed look like long tail keywords - none of them even get 100 searches a month in Google's estimates.
I would personally target long tails like this with blog posts. I don't know what kind of website you're working on, but if it has been around for awhile and has some domain authority, having some solid articles on how your company helps businesses [find employees] for companies that are [looking for staff] members that are reliable and worth their effort, it would probably draw in some of these long tails on its own.
With such long tails, you could probably target several of them with one article. A series of articles that describe (in generalities) your company's hiring methods would probably allow you space to get lots of these in the text.

Hi Jason
A good place to start is by reading/studying 'The Beginners Guide to SEO' which can be found here on Moz http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo
From your list of keywords, it looks like your target audience is Employers who are looking for new Employees ? This list of keywords looks like it has the Adwords competition index and local monthly searches ?
If so, those are very targeted keywords with little search volume, though likely to convert well.
I'd suggest considering some more generic search terms also, Employers do search on terms such as 'recruitment' and 'recruitment agency', so worth revisiting your list of keywords to incorporate some higher volume terms as well.
That's not to say it's better to target those before the more targeted & longtail, can be easier to rank for those before trying the more generic, which can be supported by the longtail.
As for how many words, as many or as little really, depends on what your website has to offer and who your target audience are. A combination of high volume generics and lower volume longtail could be the way to go, depends on your website's and businesses' objectives.
Each page within your site would ideally be based around one main topic, so one main keyword, supported by one, two or three secondary keywords. Each page should serve a specific purpose and add value based around that purpose.
It can be useful to try keywords that you're unsure about via Paid search to get a feel for volumes, CTRs and conversions.
Hopefully some things to consider there.
Regards
Simon

Domain keyword ranking
I used to use Searchmetrics (years ago) which enabled me to add in the domain name into their website, and it would provide all the keywords that rank for it. Does Moz do that do you know? Thanks

Setting Up a Keyword Matrix
Greetings MOZ community!! My real estate web site contains about 500 pages with perhaps 70 pages targeting low volume, somewhat valuable but not very competitive keywords. Three to four URLs target very competitive terms. The following terms are among the most valuable: New York City office space,
Keyword Research | | Kingalan1
New York office space,
Manhattan office space,
NYC office space Such variants as: Office space in New York City,
Office space in New York,
Office space in Manhattan,
Office space in NYC
ETCETERA convert really well How would I match different terms to different URLs? For example I have just re-written the following two critical URLs: www.nyc-officespace-leader.com (home page)
http://www.nyc-officespace-leader.com/commercial-space/office-space (product page) Would it make sense to use "Manhattan office space" and variants on the home page while excluding "New York City office space" variants? At the same time I would use "New York City office space" variants on the "office-space" product page while excluding all mention of "Manhattan office space". Is this logical and does it conform to SEO best practices? For the "NYC office space" terms I would add them to http://www.nyc-officespace-leader.com/listings. This URL has almost no text but a strong potential to rent because of a high number of incoming internal links. Is this approach sensible? In general what measures should I take to prevent URLs from competing for the same keywords? Also, is there a software package or tools that I can use to come up with keyword variants? As a non SEO professional, can I create my own keyword matrix or is this really in the realm of a professional SEO consultant? Thanks, Alan0 -
Small Business website help please. All help is appreciated and thank you in advance.
Hello I am working on my families website, it is a Colorado barn construction site. I am new here, so any and all help is appreciated. I have already gotten some excellent tips for general seo, but now trying to pinpoint in on a target. I am reading as much as I can everyday. My questions are: Keywords... Ok so when I type in keywords and the results come up, even with an exact match, I am 12 pages back. So what influences the keyword rankings? Is it best to add in like say a service into a paragraph? Like I have been using Ubersuggest or however its spelled, and so would you take keyword phrases and then try to naturally add them to paragraphs? Is this how rankings are created? Thus your site being found? I have major competition that does not even have the keywords I type in, found on there site, and they still rank #1. So I feel that it must lead into my next question DA. Domain Authority: I assume domain authority comes into play. The leading company in my world has a 50 and I have a 15. I am trying to raise this, and using the Moz tools I see my competitor has like 400 edu links. So in some ways it seems like wow get as many edu links as possible. But now it seems like this is not good? Like everyone is afraid to get links that may be considered spam in nature. That being said, would you still go after edu links? Media: So kind of an odd question, but does adding a video to a home page help bounce rates? Like maybe if they sit and watch a two minute video that is interesting, then they may check out the rest of the site? Or for the sake of load times, do you keep the homepage as fast as possible? Thank you for any tips. Also if you view my site, please give me any negative feedback as you can to help me improve. Thank you Chris

Spammy Industry Keyword Research
Hi everyone, First question posted on here. I have spent a lot time this week going through videos and discussions since I signed up here earlier this week. We're just starting in a particular niche that is powerful (home-based businesses), but EXTREMELY spammy with all the at-home opportunities from stuffing envelopes, to MLM, etc. Then there's the other side which is not as spammy, but just not an overall good business model with the in-home Tupperware, candle, and makeup party sales companies. The people that we help and serve are just people who want to start up a part-time or full-time home-based business doing what they love. Maybe it's a dad who loves golf and would like to start a golf store on Ebay or a lady who is great at making stuff and wants to open an Etsy shop or start selling her goods at craft fairs. Our program is more about teaching them how to start a real home-based business that can either earn them a profit either part-time or fulltime while also doing what they love and spending time with their family. My biggest question right now as we begin the Keyword Research and SEO process part of this, is how do we go about doing the keyword research for this while also dealing with a spammy niche? All the research I've been doing for home-based businesses comes back to all the ugly examples I gave above and that isn't the type of people that we're a good fit for. I appreciate all your help and guidance in advance. Been doing web development for 10+ years but finally taking the tiger by the throat and actually learning the SEO/SEM piece myself.

Keyword Research Tool
Which tool is most reliable to do Keyword Research ? I have observed that data in Google Keywords Tool seems to fluctuate a lot. For instance a particular keyword in GKT had an exact Global Search Volume of 2800 3 days back , today it is around 1200 . I can not make decisions on such unreliable data ...

How to interpret the keyword tool?
I've played with the keyword tool a bit. Some keywords have 43% difficulty and some have 55%. What do these difficulty levels mean? I don't really know how to go about it.

Top Ranking sites for specific keywords
Is there a way to put in a list of targeted keywords and see what the top 5 sites on Google are? There are several competitor tools in SEOmoz but I can't find anything that would allow you to do that. I have a list of 40 or so keywords that I would like to check what sites are in the top 3 positions on Google for each of the keywords. Thanks in advance
