Page information out of date - implications for SEO
Hi everyone,
We have a page on our website which is optimised for "London to Amsterdam trains" and "Any Dutch station" (a particular fare type). It's one of the best performing pages in terms of organic SEO.
However the fare is being discontinued so the information is now redundant... what should we do? It's an old blog post so it's dated but it will be frustrating for people to get to it through a search engine and then realise that it's old information.
Should we create a new page and optimise it for the same keywords or will this be detrimental? Should we update the original page or add a note that links to a new page?
Confused as to the best way forward...
Thanks
Nila

RE: How can you get the right site links for your site?
Have you got any suggestions of how to optimize for the brand Loco2 without coming across as OTT. The reason is we already have Loco2 on a lot of pages. Should we try and optimise each page we want as a site link for Loco2 AND relevant terms for that page?

RE: How can you get the right site links for your site?
We will try to optimise site pages that we want to come up. What tips do you have for that. For example on the Times and Tickets, do we need to make it explicit that this is where you can search and book trains? should this be via H1 tags or meta data or something else. The reason I ask this is that there is only a little text on this page for a reason as it's function is as a software tool.
What about the Loco2 / Loco 2 discrepancy? That is the main issue - we would like to see substantial site links that are identical for both these terms (I have changed the question to reflect this!)

How can you get the right site links for your site?
Hello all,
I have been trying to get Google to list relevant site links for my site when you type in our brand name, Loco2 or for when Loco2 comes up in a search result.
Different things come up when you search Loco2 and Loco 2.
We would like site links to look like how they do when you search Loco 2. However Loco2 is our brand name, NOT Loco 2.
Does anyone know why Google is doing this and whether we can influence results? We have done as much as possible via Google webmaster, in terms of specifying the links we DO NOT want Google to list for Loco2. However, when you search "Loco2", results only show simple site links.
Ideally what we want is:
-
Loco2 to be recognised as the brand NOT Loco 2
-
The same results (substantial, identical) for Loco2 as for Loco 2 (think o2 and o 2)
-
For the site links to reflect the main pages of our site (Times & Tickets, Engine Room forum etc.)
Many thanks in advance!

RE: Is it OK for a sitemap to appear as a "Top URL" in Google Webmaster?
Thanks for the answer. However I'm still unclear on a few things so I thought I'd give some further info:
- We actually have two XML sitemaps - one for our main site including our forums (this sitemap is generated/submitted by a ruby on rails plugin) and one for blog posts and static pages (this sitemap is generated by a Wordpress plugin). The sitemap which is appearing as a "Top URL" is the first one
- There are actually no links to our sitemap anywhere on our site - the only way Google knows about it is because we automatically generate and submit it to Webmaster
I think the reason that it is appearing as a Top URL is because all of the page titles of forum posts are listed in the sitemap, and this is the only page where they are all listed on one page. So I think you are right about the 'simple algorithm' thing, but I think it's because of the frequency of the keyword in the sitemap, rather than because the sitemap is linked to from anywhere on the site (because it's not).
This brings me to a related question - is it bad having two separate XML sitemaps, and should I be linking to them somehow from the site?

Is it OK for a sitemap to appear as a "Top URL" in Google Webmaster?
I'm using Google Webmaster (alongside other tools) to understand how Google is indexing my site.
One of the tools is "Content Keywords", where it lists keywords that Google sees as significant for your site. The keywords shown are generally fine, but when I click on an individual word, I am often seeing our sitemap as one of the "Top URLs" that the keyword is found on (our sitemap is at system/sitemap1.xml.gz) - is this OK?
Obviously I don't want to add the sitemap URL to robots.txt, but I also want to ensure that 'real' user-focused pages (e.g. our homepage) appear higher in the "Top URLs" list for the keywords, as I'm assuming this is an indicator of how the site is performing in search.
Any help appreciated!
