One question I do have - do you typically recommend setting image dimensions/ratios in the code, or no? We have faced an issue in the past with this where if are image or logo is not the correct size (ex: a rectangular logo trying to fit in a square box) everything gets distorted. I am just curious if this is a best practice, or you typically recommend just uploading images at a particular size each time.
We recently relaunched our website and after running multiple page speed tests (GT Metrix, Google, etc.) our results aren't great.

I don't think so...We had owned the domains for several years and the bad links have just come up in webmaster tools recently.
Thanks! No we haven't hired anyone to do any backlink building for us in the past which is why were really curious to know how one of our domains got hacked (loyaltyexpo-europe.com) which isn't even active and had made thousands and thousands of backlinks to our main site loyalty360.org.
I was looking in GWT yesterday and found we have several thousand "spam" backlinks...I am curious why this happens and how this happens?
There are some links from websites/domains that are not mine that appear to be spam. However, we own a large group of domains and have noticed some of the links are coming from 2 of those sites/domains we own to my main site. The sites/domains are not active, we just own them. I am wondering how someone could access these domains that are not active and create spammy backlinks to my main website? (They created about 20,000 links).

I am having a similar issue with my site, and was looking for a quick clarification.
We have several "member" pages that have been created as a part of registration (thousands) and they are appearing as duplicate content. When you say add noindex and and a canonical, is this something that needs to be done to every individual page or is there something that can be done that would apply to the thousands of pages at once?

We recently found a handful of keywords we would like our homepage to rank for (for example - customer experience). On our homepage we have articles (4-5 posted daily) that feature the keywords we are targeting (one being customer experience). How do the keywords we are using in our daily articles that are posted to the homepage affect the overall keyword ranking for the homepage?
In other words do the keywords used in the articles (title, first 2-3 paragraphs, meta description, etc.) all roll up/build up to the homepage's keywords or how does that work?

Thanks! The website seems to be pretty sketchy so I am not sure what the chances of them actually removing the links are. Is disavowing usually a typical practice? Just wondering since google says "In most cases, Google can assess which links to trust without additional guidance, so most normal or typical sites will not need to use this tool."
Hi - I was looking in my Google webmaster tools because we saw a huge jump in backlinks last week. We found this one article with 84,475 total links, which obviously stands out as spam. All the links are from 1 page and 1 domain (financeai.com).

My question is - should we/what can we do to clean this up? How does this impact our search ranking?
We have had some issues with our website getting extremely slow overnight, and we believe the site scraping is really slowing down the site at points.

By submit to webmaster tools, I meant submit the link so Google will not crawl it again.
Interesting - good to know! So even when we submit these links to Google Webmaster tools, that doesn't solve the problem, correct? Even if Google isn't crawling these links (eventually) will it still hurt SEO rankings overall?
Got it. So I guess we need to decide what makes sense work-load wise and what is best for the site. If we do 301 redirects, is that seen as more beneficial than an "engaging" 404 page that allows people to go to another page?
It seems like the 404 page would be one project where constantly adding in 301 redirects would be a lot of work.
Is there no way to just completely remove or delete a page/404 or it will always exist on some level?
When we ran the MOZ report it said we had more than a couple...probably around 50 or so. Our website has been around 5-6 years and I don't think we have ever done anything with any of them. With this many errors, what is your suggestion? Would it be faster to submit the link to Google Webmaster tools than waiting for them to be crawled again?
We are using Expression Engine. A lot of the links are within our own site - they are articles we once posted, but then we decided to close for one reason or another, and now they are throwing a 404 error. We don't necessarily have anything to redirect them to since they are mostly just random article pieces, which is why we were looking into deleting them completely.

We recently ran the Moz website crawl report and saw a number of 404 pages from our site come back. These were returned as "high priority" issues to fix. My question is, how do 404's impact search ranking? From what Google support tells me, 404's are "normal" and not a big deal to fix, but if they are "high priority" shouldn't we be doing something to remove them?
Also, if I do want to remove the pages, how would I go about doing so? Is it enough to go into Webmaster tools and list it as a link no to crawl anymore or do we need to do work from the website development side as well?
