I recommend that you only approve pingbacks from websites you trust. Use SEOmoz tools to determine a site's Mozrank/Domain Authority, and I agree that you should delete pingbacks from your own domain. Using a related pages plugin is a better choice for inter-linking your content.

Does the client have an image on the site that matches the phrase? If a query pops the image results snippet within organic results, you may see traffic from a term that you rank for within image search, but not organic.

I agree 100% with Matt. I would also recommend checking your internal links to ensure that they are all following the same format with or without the /.
