Another thing to consider is that if you do have an image ranking within the SERPS that you don't change the filename at all - I've seen that it takes google's bot(s) much longer to reindex an image that's filename has changed vs like some content change or meta title etc

RE: Posting "similar" blog posts to multiple blog sites seems "shady", does it work?
'Given that, if the 4 blogging tools above all require the use of a subdomain, then how am I actually taking advantage of the seo value of blogger, posterous, tumblr?'
Google is clever enough to know that although the domains you listed are pretty strong, they will judge each blog on it's own without taking into consideration the domain level strength(esp since it's a free platform).
My advice is to have one blog, on your own site and put the best possible content on it. Putting thin and slightly tweaked content all over the show is not going to bring you the kind of results you're after.
Those blogging platforms do have their uses, but keep in mind the above and that you should not invest too much time in them if you have a core website/business that you're trying to rank/sell etc

I'd like to see a lot less weight being put into keyword matched domains for a start..

RE: How to Set Custom Crawl Rate in Google Webmaster Tools?
It's better to just leave it on default - custom crawl rates are only needed if you're experiencing traffic problems from the server(as stated in your screenshot).
Yyou will also use more bandwidth on your own server by the google bot coming more often so this should also be something you think about. Also worth mentioning is that after 90 days it will go back to default settings.

RE: Google Analytics - Intelligence Custom Alerts
Hi Gary
As far as I'm aware it will only apply to future stats and not backdate/query past stats. I'm not sure if this is something that Google is going to implement in the future - but I do think it would be a nice feature if they did

RE: Change Homepage internal Link from Image to Targeted Anchor Text -- Spam??
Adding text (eg. ourkeyword) below/above the image/logo will not be seen as spam.
You don't mention if your image/logo is making use of the alt tag or not?

RE: Backlinks
Hi Brad
Keep in mind that sometimes the DA can be misleading when a site or link is on a subdomain(blogger being a good example) since Google will class the blog/site on it's own and you would then look at the PA.
Also worth noting is that the links relevancy and position within the relevant content and anchor text is ideal.
Personally I would check the competitors backlink profile, sort by domain authority(keeping an eye on subdomains that inflate this figure) and then start checking for relevancy.
Hope this helps

RE: Why do people rarely give each other Thumbs Up?
I give a thumbs up when someone answers a question in a very accurate and understandable way. Also I tend to thumb up something that really makes me stand back and think - or just makes me laugh

RE: Home page rankings disappeared - Google Penalty?
I had a quick look at the site and a few subpages and what I'd suggest is changing the onpage optimization on the home page since this page -> http://www.marrikashairextensions.com/brazilian-hair-extensions you can focus for the keyword 'brazilian hair extensions' . I'd also add some good content about the product on that page since at the moment it's pretty blank.
The results that come up when I search on google.com for that keyword are pages that are stronger in terms of domain strength, backlinks and on page optimization so I'd say it's not a penalty but rather a ranking adjustment. If it were a penalty I don't think it would only affect your home page and leave other sub pages rankings intact.
If you've not done anything black hat(such as buying links) then it's certainly just the algorith changes and you need to work on the site.
Hope that's of some help

RE: How To Solve Too Many On-Page Links In Blogger?
What you need to do is paginate, see this guide -> http://www.bloggerbuster.com/2008/08/numbered-page-navigation-for-blogger.html
It will require some html knowledge but will be worth the final result.
Hope this helps

RE: Google Panelizes to much SEO
I'm not saying that a keyword matched domain should receive a penalty, I'm saying that it should be a more neutral ground when it comes to ranking factors.
If your site happens to have a keyword matched domain but has great content and value for a visitor then it should rightly rank higher for relevant queries - and if they changed the weighting on the matched domains then it should(in theory) weed out the thinner value sites.
Matt Cutts did mention in that interview the phrase 'level playing field' - not that I personally believe this could ever be achieved with an algorithm

RE: Consolidating 3 regional domains
Redirecting each and every page using a 301 redirect to the most relevant new page is the best way to do it in my opinion. It's a time consuming process but it is worth doing this rather than a whole domain redirect.

RE: Tracking Email campaign
There is a difference between the links target and it's title, you could set it like this [http://www.example.com](http://www.example.com/ ?utm_source=newsletter1&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newletter2109) so that it keeps the tracking but looks pretty to the user.
As far as URL shortening services go, I don't think that it raises the chances of it being marked as spam, but I would imagine there being less 'trust' from many users when it comes to clicking a shortened URL.
Personally I'd keep the URL shortening services away from any email campaigns/newsletters and use them for Twitter and the like

RE: My crawl diagnostic is showing 2 duplicate content and titles.
Hi Jason and welcome to seoMoz!
If you do not have a rewrite in place(in your htaccess file) then both the www.mydomain.co.uk AND www.mydomain.co.uk/index.html will resolve in your browser. I suggest doing a 301 rewrite and while you're at it make sure you also rewrite all non www varients -> eg http://mydomain.co.uk 301 redirect that to http://www.mydomain.co.uk
You can then go set your preferred version in your Webmaster Tools.
This would be the code for apache(check with your host/developer if you're unsure) :
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example.co.uk
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.example.co.uk/$1 [R=301,L] -
RE: What is more important, tweets/shares or traditional link building?

RE: How can I check if the FOLLOW,NOINDEX tag is working?
The code is correct and I see that there are 0 links to that results page - the only thing I can think of is the search engines indexed the page before you added the tag!

RE: My crawl diagnostic is showing 2 duplicate content and titles.
Hi Jason
That's perfect(and working) for redirecting all non www pages. You still need to decide on your original question regarding the index page!
Add the following to your htaccess file after the code you've already added :
RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,9}\ /index\.html\ HTTP/ RewriteRule ^index\.html$ http://www.keystonemortgages.co.uk/ [R=301,L]

RE: Links from Nextag/PriceGrabber
While I'm not going to advocate the buying of links, I will say that in my opinion paying for a banner or text advertisement on high profile trusted and relevant site will not hurt your SEO goal at all. Where you have to be careful is the low quality 'spammy directories' that are dime a dozen out there.
For me it's pretty clear that you're not just buying a link, but advertising on a relevant business directory.
-
RE: Www.mydomain.tld same as mydomain.tld - unexpected results
Hi Pandy
Set your htaccess file to redirect all non www variants to the www ones (or vice versa depending on which you'd prefer). That should prevent the seoMoz 'bot' from reaching the 'wrong' ones(and also make sure search engines don't too.
On a side note - if Bing has your pages cached without the www and you want to go with the www variants then I suggest you first do a 301 redirect of all the pages and the domain itself so you don't lose out on any traffic and links built etc
Edit : going to leave my reply even though it seems THB beat me too it(only just though!)

RE: Question on Directory submission
It will make no difference if you include the http:// or not - it's really up to the directory which they prefer. What is important is :
-
correct and most relevant category
-
anchor text still matters I believe
-
you want to try avoid the 'free for all' directories or placing your link on a page with LOTS of links on it already(or like all the way down on page number 40 of the category).
Hope the above helps
ps. As with most things in life balance and moderation is key - so don't go overboard with directories but rather use them as a part of your overall link building strategy.

It's pretty much a useless metric these days - and remember that there might be two seperate 'Page Ranks' - the one on the toolbar and the internal one that Google has in it's vault

RE: External Links through Open site explorer
Excuse me for having a little chuckle at the psd that my firefox tried to download after clicking the sexintheshower link!
But on a serious note, we have links like these too and it has puzzled me in the past. I've also noticed this sort of thing on competitors sites and to be honest it just seems like one of those things that are best ignored. It's not going to hurt your rankings in any way and to try hunt down owners via whois lookups etc would likely just be a wild goose chase!
I'm sure there will be someone on here that could give a technical reason why these links appear, but I do believe it's not something to invest much time in

RE: Plummeting traffic and rankings for main KWs
Hi Sue
Had a quick look at the sites, and did a reverse ip lookup too since I was curious if both were hosted on the same server(which they are not). I then noticed that you need to redirect the following :
to
You also have a .com version which is identical(as far as I could see from the quick look I had) to your .co.uk site - are you only accepting business from the UK and are you only interested in ranking on Google UK? If the answer is yes then I'd advise you to redirect the .com site to the .co.uk and/or implement canonical tags so that Google knows which site is the primary one. These kinds of duplicate content issues can and do affect rankings.
Another bit of advice is while I'm not going to get into the whole debate over paid links, I will say that if you use your company/domain name as the anchor text for paid listings in quality directories then you'll be far less likely to be penalised.
If you need some help with the redirect code and implementation just let us know
edit : and take out those keyword meta tags!

RE: Getting a citation page indexed
What you could try do if the link means that much to you (judging by the steps you've already taken I'd say it does) - is to try contact the webmaster and pitch the concept of the importance of their site being indexed so people looking for their family services will be able to find them easier. Offer Jame's solution which any webmaster would be able to quickly correct.
This would be best done over the phone though.
Good luck

RE: How much of an issue is it if a site is somehow connected to a site that was penalized by Google?
Mike is right about the shared hosting - just make sure that there are no outbound links to the affected site. Shared WMT account won't matter. You can always use a different Google account if you're still worried

RE: Clarification from old seomoz post
It means that Google will clear your browsing history and, in theory(since I have my doubts about this) it would then offer you unbiased results and advertisements. The part about 'google can add the firefox' just means that they detect the user agent in the browser and know which browser you're using.
Personally I'm not convinced that doing this will simply clear their little pocket of info that they have gathered though - but that's just me haha

RE: Duplicat content affecting SEO Rankings
Hi there
There are a few ways to do this, and it would depend on your goals. Obviously you don't want two different domains with the exact same content so here are some options to consider :
-
Apply correct use of cannonical tags so that search engines know which is the original source, and then put your link building efforts into the original
-
Create and add unique content around the Bulgaria sites property content and apply Bulgaria specific on-page optimisation to them. The only problem with this approach is that if these properties also feature on the main(buypropertyanywhere) site that you'd be competing against yourself.
-
Redirect the bulgaria site to your main site and make sure that your site architecture is good and has bulgaria as it's own 'section'. Put all your seo efforts into just your main site.
You've not given exact URL's which is fine - but if you were looking to rank the Bulgaria site on Bulgarian search engines and specifically for local searches there then the redirect option might be excluded from the above.
Hope that made some sense
