I managed to snap up a domain last October that was previously being used by people to create online resumes.
On this domain I have created a site that allows businesses to have a short web address that they then use to send their customers to. This short address displays a list of review sites that the customers can choose from to leave a review on the business, ie GMB, Facebook (basically any established reviews site) etc.
The problem I have is that there are so many old links that are pointing to the site referencing the previous resume business and I have three issues:
Many people blindly sign up thinking it’s the resume business because they read it on another site who’s link they followed.
The sites that list my domain are mainly job or resume related sites.
I have the previous business customers still with their personalised links leading back to the site that I currently 404.
The site in question is https://re.vu
Any assistance or advice would be gratefully received.
Hi FVdBeuken,
Just tested it with WordPress Version 4.4.2 & Yoast SEO Version 3.0.7 and all still works fine.
Make sure you follow the instructions carefully and let me know how you get on.
Cheers,
Dean
Possibly a little more information is required to receive an answer. Are you looking for freelancers or to offer your services or perhaps your looking for a new job?
Ensure you are logged in to your account and you will find your invoice here: https://moz.com/billing
Thanks for the heads up on Session Cam Amelia, not see that one before. I have used a similar service before namely ClickTale but that got a bit pricey.
The setup was easy, I did ask a few question and the support was awesome so first impression are good (starting to sound like I'm affiliated, I'm not just like it when I receive a good service)
Hi,
Have you checked the source code to see it the alt tag is actually there?
ie in firefox/chrome > right click > view page source
Looking for something like:
If it is there then perhaps you need to wait for Moz to re crawl the site, if not and it's definitely on the image alt in wordpress media then you may need to look at your theme. Establish if the theme utilises the alt element and if not then you may need to add it yourself (via a child theme preferably)

Hi,If your using a CMS then there may be an extension to create the html version. What CMS are you using?
Hi,
Have a look at this article by Distilled: https://www.distilled.net/blog/getting-started-with-google-tag-manager/
Hi Faye,
Yes with custom taxonomies. Familiarise yourself with 'Basic diagram on taxonomies and their relationships in Wordpress' over at http://codex.wordpress.org/Taxonomies and also look at Taxonomy Generator here http://generatewp.com/taxonomy/ for a quick way.
There are also plugins such as http://wp-types.com/ that will allow you to do all this without coding.
Hi Faye,
Sorry for going off on a tangent. Personally I would go with the following (to avoid the 301 completely):
http://www.thewoodgalleries.co.uk/engineered-wood/ as a parent page
http://www.thewoodgalleries.co.uk/engineered-wood/verona as a child page
Then use categories to identify the colours as these are the product variants
Or switch it about to suit yourself, however I think the parent / child / category is the way forward unless you wish to create another taxonomy which is easy for any decent coder.
With custom taxonomies you can create whatever configuration you wish.
Hi,
Firstly I would ask myself, what would I want to see as a person looking for this product. Am I searching for the brand, the type of flooring or the colour
Do people know what engineered, prefinished, reclaimed wood is when looking for flooring, is verona only ever available as Dark Engineered Wood? if so then why have such along url structure.
Rather than:
http://www.thewoodgalleries.co.uk/engineered-wood/darks-blacks/verona/
Perhaps:
http://www.thewoodgalleries.co.uk/engineered-wood/verona
Are you referring to the GA dashboard as this can be customised to show any widgets?
If you are referring to GA in general then the percentages are calculated as a percentage of your overall sessions for the selected time period.
Hi,
There is the same question here on moz: Duplicate Content and URL Capitalization
Thomas,
That's an awesome tool, thank you for sharing.
Hi,
Lines containing only a comment are discarded completely, and therefore do not indicate a record boundary however you may need to remove the line break (not 100% sure but worth testing):
User-agent: *
Disallow: /product/
Disallow: /media/bcc.xml
Hi,
I don't believe you can use GA Exit tracking to determine what domain the user visited next without using a link on your site to track the outbound links. I can not think of any third party tools to complete this tracking.
Hi,
What type of website are you running i.e static html, php based such as Wordpress etc?
Cheers
Personally I would go fully qualified links ie xyz.com/blah.html.
Yoast has a good post here about the subject - https://yoast.com/relative-urls-issues/
Also on MOZ http://moz.com/learn/seo/internal-link
You may be best understanding Google Tag Manager first https://developers.google.com/tag-manager/ then Adding Data Layers https://developers.google.com/tag-manager/devguide
Hi,
The code examples are here https://developers.google.com/tag-manager/enhanced-ecommerce along with explanations. How to integrate would depend on the shopping platform that you are using.
Personally I wouldn’t put barriers in the way of a download, however I'm sure you will get a lot of debate about that one and at the end of the day it's what you consider to be of more value, the fact that the pdf is being downloaded or you have the information from the people who then know your going to contact them after a download.
Either way I would use a combo of QR code / printed shortlink and include analytic tracking data. Then if you do chose to collect email data first you can measure the conversion from who went to the data entry page from your exhibition any how many email addresses you collected ie:
In htaccess:
#Product 1 QR code (have your QR code point to http://www.domain.com/qr-p1)
Redirect 302 /qr-p1 http://www.domain.com/shop/product_one/doc.pdf?utm_campaign=Exhibition&utm_medium=QR Code&utm_source=Banner Stand&utm_content=ProductOnePDF
#Product 1 Short code (print your short code as to www.domain.com/widgets)
Redirect 302 /widgets http://www.domain.com/shop/product_one/doc.pdf?utm_campaign=Exhibition&utm_medium=Short Code&utm_source=Banner Stand&utm_content=ProductOnePDF
Hi, This should help (announced 5th September): An improved search box within the search results
Hi Mohammed,
You just did Seriously though If you are a Moz Analytics subscriber then yes you can post and respond to Q&A questions.
Another way is to earn over 500 MozPoints (pending staff approval) then you can also post and respond to Q&A questions.
You can add the following to the robots.txt file to ask the crawler to ignore the parameter currently being included such as:
Disallow: /*?=
'you better answer my question' sounds like a interrogation technique
Personally if they have landed on your mobile site by choice then redirecting mobile to desktop should then be a choice the user select. The user may want to view mobile version via a desktop for low-bandwidth such as a laptop with mobile broadband.
Continuing from EGOL's comment #3 if you do need the parameters for on-site search or categories then another option (admittedly it relies on Google obeying it) is to use the robots.txt and disallow the parameters for example:
Disallow: /*categoryFilter=*
Disallow: /*?utm_
As with any change to that could affect the visibility of your site to the search engines always test first.
Responsive design isn't just a shrunk down version of your site, you can control what is displayed via css etc. Google has a good resource here regarding how to serve content in optimized formats for both desktop and smartphone users https://developers.google.com/webmasters/smartphone-sites/
Had you thought about responsive design or is there a particular reason you require a mobile site?
A good article to help convince your client along with the information from Daniele here: 404 Page Best Practices
Not sure about the & (That doesn't mean it's not true) however if you are interested in search operators have a look here on Moz : http://moz.com/blog/25-killer-combos-for-googles-site-operator
If you want to know how many pages are indexed by Google then use the WMT here http://www.google.com/webmasters/
Are you asking rather than having two site brandA.com & brandB.com is there a way to create brand.com and on that site display the content relevant to the visitors location? If not then I agree with EGOL
Hi, domain.com & domain.com/index.php are regarded as separate pages so I would assume from your question that you want the index.php to be your root page? This can be achieved via Directory Index using .htaccess
You should see something like this in the htaccess file: DirectoryIndex index.php index.html
Hi,
It's not a big job to implement, best practice is to use a child theme however you could hook it in the theme functions file.
From Yoast KB:
If you're getting an error that looks like this:
Cannot redeclare yoast_breadcrumb() (previously declared in /hom/require/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-seo/inc/wpseo-functions.php:96) in <path></path>
Your theme or another plugin is including our breadcrumbs class, and not properly wrapping it in class_exists
or function_exists
wrappers. The <path>part of the error above should normally point you at either a themes or plugins directory, telling you which plugin is the culprit.</path>
The breadcrumbs class in our plugin is maintained, whereas the breadcrumbs class shipping with your theme is probably out of date. So check with the creator of your theme and send them to this page.
You should wrap the class and functions in class_exists
or function_exists
wrappers. Or, even better, you shouldn't include it at all and just tell people to install our WordPress SEO plugin and use the breadcrumbs provided by our plugin as those are far more up to date and actually work with custom post types, custom post type archives, etc.

An interesting article on moz relating to your question here: The First Link Counts Rule and the Hash Sign - Does it Change PR Sculpting?
I'm sure wayback I had an issue with apple devices not being happy with the # not having a slash.
index.html#saving-water didn't work but this index.html/#saving-water did. You might want to check it out or I may have just dreamt it!
You would need to check the web.config file rather than htaccess as you mentioned your hosted on Microsoft Servers (IIS). Although the following answer is referring to WWW v non WWW the principal is the same:
http://moz.com/community/q/how-do-i-redirect-non-www-pages-to-www-on-a-windows-server#reply_36077
Yes that's what I said CleverPhD, I just couldn't type that fast today.
Only joking Thanks for expanding on the subject.
Hi Danny,
Have you looked at the site via http://web-sniffer.net/
It would appear that the home page is just a JavaScript redirect.
I was redirected to https://www.bravosolution.com/cms/us which then could seen via Sreaming Frog.
The reason for my (default) redirect is given by web-sniffer as:
DEFAULT CORPORATE if ( path == '' ) { path = '/cms/us
Hi,
It is possible but not advisable due to the way WordPress resolves URLs you can find more information on the subject here: Removing product product-category or shop from the URLs
However some have reported sucess via this article: WooCommerce Easy Permalink Solution
Hi so I'm assuming your on IIS (I'm no expert on ISS I think you will need to configure the web.config) and I'm just going to step back now and get my coat as I only have experience with Apache
You would need to block access via htaccess rather than robots file as the robots.txt is only advisory
If you are using wordpress I use this simple plugin JF3 Maintenance Redirect
Not sure if there is a new method however I have successfully used the following in a similar situation:
On each AdWord Ad use the following destination URL format: yousite.com/?keyword={keyword}
More information on this subject here Track clicks with ValueTrack
Does the site use filters (ie dynamic php)
For example are the results that you are seeing when you enter site:"mywebsite.com": + "key phrase" similar to
mywebsite.com/SomePage/?col=red
mywebsite.com/SomePage/?col=blue
mywebsite.com/SomePage/?col=green&ftr=23
So my question boils down to are there question marks in the URL of the pages that are appearing in the search results?
With respect that was not the question being asked re 301. If you have are embarking on building link then sticking with one format would be best surely?
I believe it does matter. You should choose with or without the www and stick with it (however your site is currently formatted).
Technically speaking with www is a different URL that the one without www so you link building efforts would be split across two domain which would not be cool.
Short answer is technically no. However if you are using keywords in your campaign that you already rank well for in the organic results then this may have and effect of moving visitors that you many have gained naturally to paid visitors.
AdWords can be a great tool to evaluating keywords (and weeding out negative ones). So unless I want to dominate the results page for a particular keyword then I don't use keywords that I already rank well for in my campaigns.
Looks like the konelux.ee is being redirected to konelux.fi have you checked the htaccess file on konelux.ee for a redirection?
Excellent. Good luck with your new site.
