When you use the custom date range, Google isn't listing results based on the date they were indexed. Google is using an estimated publication date.

Google tries to estimate the the publication date based on meta-data and other features of the page such as dates in the content, title and URL. The date Google first indexed the page is just one of the things that Google can use to estimate the publication date.

I also suspect that dates in any sitemap.xml files will also be taken into consideration.

But, given that even Google can't guarantee that it'll crawl and index articles on the day they've been published the crawl data may not be an accurate estimate.

Also, if the scraped content is being re-published with intact internal links (are these the full URL - do you they resolve to your original website?) then it's pretty obvious where the content came from.

As Alan said, if the pages don't have any inbound links then you're not going to lose any link equity by removing them. If the pages in question are not getting direct traffic or search traffic and don't have any links then I'd just delete them.

Otherwise a 301 redirect to the most relevant content is the best way to go.

Do a check for any internal links to these pages too. Your own links should be easy to fix. Remove them or point them at the better relevant content.

It might also be worth reviewing your 404 page. This can often be forgotten, but it can do a lot of the hard work guiding visitors to the content they're looking for.

As far as the user experience goes I think you're right. I've seen some horrible examples and personally I'd avoid using them. I think you have to ask yourself what the actual benefit to the visitor is and be realistic about your answer.

The quicker you can get the information the visitor is looking for in front of them the better.

Even if you think it's the way to go It's definably worth testing to make sure you're not throwing away conversions and killing your visitor engagement.

I'm not sure how it would harm your long tail after all, the content is still there and indexed?

On the keyword ranking page in your campaign there's a button on the right hand side, just above the graph that you can use to send yourself an email with all the historic ranking data in .csv format.

It includes ranking data for you and any competitors that you've set up on all of the search engines you set up in your campaign.

For some of my campaigns, this goes back years!

Was there other historic search data you were trying to get?

You shouldn't have a problem. Google will be able to index the page just fine. Using Javascript and CSS to hide/reveal content like this is not a problem.

If you do have concerns that google might not be able to see part of a page you can always used the fetch as googlebot option in Google Webmaster Tools. (it's under Health), Once the page has been fetched you can click on the Fetch Status (normally "Success") and see the html that google saw.

In this specific case it's really not a problem for Google.

Yep, there's a real risk that the slider is going to push more valuable content down the page and potentially below the fold.

"The fold" is not determined by header tags or anything like that, it's purely down to the window size of the browser. Different people are going to have different fold positions based on their screen size or their preferred browser window size so you can't be absolutely sure where the cut-off position is going to be.

I'm not a big fan of sliders. My worry is that they get stuck at the top of the page to create something visually interesting / dynamic rather than think about justifying the slider's place on the page.

Does the slider help clearly communicate the proposition / offer or idea being presented?

You want visitors arriving on the page to feel as if they've found what they are looking for rather than starting a treasure hunt...

Is the slider content indexable then you can treat this as content above the fold and optimise accordingly, but you've instantly placed stylistic constrains on yourself!

Without taking a look at the site and the content you've got it's hard to talk specifics, but you might want to test removing the links from the product pages to the blog. After all, you want people to add the products to their cart - not drift off into the blog.

(Of course. Depends on how well the blog supports people purchasing decisions, and promotes your offerings etc,)

In one of your response to Greg you say: "if there are not many reviews available for a product but my client has reviewed the product and posted it to their blog, Google will prefer that to the product page itself."

This makes me suspect that it's just the weight of relevant copy on the page that's causing Google to view the blog page as more authoritative. I'd also guess (gut feeling) that having links from your product pages to your blog is also going to make is less clear to Google which should be the authoritative page.
