RE: Is user engagement a ranking signal?
User engagement is a signal for mobile but not desktop-http://searchengineland.com/google-user-experience-as-a-ranking-signal-is-currently-only-for-mobile-results-not-desktop-results-220719
Even if it isn't now, I could see it be a ranking factor in the future.

RE: Is it worth it having different cities in your footer, each with a separate page?
What you are saying about displaying projects in different cities makes a ton of sense. All they do is replicate content with the cities changed out. However, what about for a new business that has yet to build any clients? What if it is something like a retail store with one location? I am referencing suburban areas were it would be about 10 cities maybe less.

That was before the doorway page update. I am wondering if that changed anything.

RE: Local SEO: How to optimize for multiple cities on website
With the recent update to Doorway pages would you consider changing your original post? Or still go with that?

RE: Is it worth it having different cities in your footer, each with a separate page?
I never had any intention of doing it, I was just surprised that so many other people still did it. There was not one single site that didn't do it.

Is it worth it having different cities in your footer, each with a separate page?
I have been looking at the website of local web design companies and every single one in my area has a footer with links to a separate page for that local city. This seems like a bad idea to me, but everyone in the local pack has it. Does it work?

RE: How do I add https version of site to Bing webmaster tools?
I just went ahead and submitted it in https just to make sure. I haven't had any problems or drops in traffic.

RE: What would cause the wrong category page to come up?
I did the site search that you suggest- site:www.site.com widgets and it was in the correct order.
When I added the word used to the search it came up in the wrong order. They both have the word used, used the same amount of time. It makes no sense to me.

RE: What would cause the wrong category page to come up?
They actually are two separate types of items so I don't think I can canonical because I still want people to find the other category if that is what they are looking for. The names are so similar it is a problem.
I have an x category, y category, and xy category. Even though the names are the same, they are very different products.

RE: What would cause the wrong category page to come up?
It is unfortunate, but they have almost the exact same name. I don't know how to differentiate them.

RE: What would cause the wrong category page to come up?
For the term "used widget" ,the title for the page I want to rank is "used widget for sale". For the page I do not want it to rank for this term it is "used widget - type for sale".

RE: What would cause the wrong category page to come up?
It It has breadcrumbs and it shows the category in the level up mechanism for the category sort.

What would cause the wrong category page to come up?
I am trying to figure out why the wrong thing is coming up in the serps. For example, we are trying to rank for used widgets. But when you type in used widgets in google the primary widget page doesn't come up, one of the secondary categories under used widgets comes up. What would cause this? What are things I should check?

RE: When doing a site search my homepage comes up second. Does that matter?
I am in the process of redoing our homepage. We actually do not have a lot of content on our homepage and virtually no keywords. That should be remedied in the next few weeks and we will see if that solves the problem.

RE: When doing a site search my homepage comes up second. Does that matter?
It is just a basic site for a non-profit. Everything seems to be ok, I just thought it was weird. It looks like the homepage doesn't have an optimized enough title so I think that might be it.

RE: Screaming Frog showing 503 status code. Why?
I do use Cloudflare and I am wondering if that may be the problem.

Screaming Frog showing 503 status code. Why?
Screaming Frog is showing a 503 code for images. If I go and use a header checker like SEOBook it shows 200. Why would that be?
Here is an example link-

RE: When doing a site search my homepage comes up second. Does that matter?
It isn't a keyword search it is a site:search. I have a copy of a site audit and it says that the homepage should come up first, but it doesn't.

RE: Should pages with rel="canonical" be put in a sitemap?
- What are your thoughts on title tag and meta description on these pages? The only thing that changes on these pages is how the item is displayed. Should I change the title tag and meta description even though they should never be the organic landing page?

RE: Should pages with rel="canonical" be put in a sitemap?
Since my preference is always to have people land on the page with thumbnails that is what I was thinking but wanted to double check. Thank you.
-
RE: Should pages with rel="canonical" be put in a sitemap?
These pages will be almost identical. They are category pages for ecommerce and the only difference is it will display all items and there will be no thumbnails. It sounds like you are saying not to put them in the sitemap in this instance?
-
RE: Should pages with rel="canonical" be put in a sitemap?
They are category pages for an ecommerce site. Currently we list the items 25 to a page with a thumbnail. The second view will be all of the items in a basic list view with no thumbnails. We have some categories with several hundred items and our users have requested a way to see them all on one page.

Should pages with rel="canonical" be put in a sitemap?
I am working on an ecommerce site and I am going to add different views to the category pages. The views will all have different urls so I would like to add the rel="canonical" tag to them. Should I still add these pages to the sitemap?
