With a limited budget for SEO tools, what would you suggest having that would cover everything. Lets say with a £200 a month budget. We only look after ourselves, which is around 5 accounts in terms of PPC, so SEO follows similar suit.

Is SEOmoz effective enough to cover all of our basis. Are there bits it is missing that are better else where?

What are your thoughts basically and what are the benefits of each tool.

As far as I know, OSE is simply a tool that crawls your site and as many as it can, so if the link is there, it will report it. OSE doesn't tell you what juice is coming to you, if any at all.

So I would say it will probably report it as a followed internal link, if that's what the code says, (can't seem to get on OSE to explore further) but in terms of where the link juice goes, I'd say, as you said, it's "a link with no link juice"

I think you're really going to need to start building some external links directly to that page, the on page linking seems a bit saturated to me, links going all over the place, which will split the link juice down. If that's something that can't be changed easily or at all, then I'd definitely focus on external links from other websites, within the same industry is preferable, that uses "Freelance Copywriting" as the link anchor itself.

Look at the top sites ranking for "freelance copywriting" on http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/ for some ideas.

Linking from a page back to itself has no benefit what-so-ever. A page has already benefited from the link juice coming to it, it cannot then pass that back to itself. Also, note that the first anchored text hold the most value, in fact a page back in 2008, Rand stated that it hold all the value:

Good internal linking is based on getting from the home page to the internal page in the smallest number of links. Keep you site shallow to help the user easily navigate to the important pages on your site.

And Finally, remember Google is based on user experience, this is something that does not benefit the user in anyway, that I can think of, so Google (and other SE's) will have made sure this hold no value to their algorithm.

We operate in a few countries and so have our .com website redirect to the country the person is from.

I was wondering how the link juice worked in this case, does it simply stop at .com, or does it get split evenly over the sites it's redirecting to.

We have just bought the .org site as well, I am to believe that link juice from a .org to a .org is better than from a .org to a .com. We have redirected the .org to the .com which then goes the the relevant country's site.

An example of link juice would be...

Say an Australian organisation with a .org site links to our .org site, the link juice then goes from our .org site links to our .com site, and this then geo links back through to our .com.au site.

Would it be a lot better to link directly from .org to our .com.au site in this instance, or for the sake of all the sites, would the current method work okay?

Do bad links "hurt" your ranking or just not add any value. By this I mean, if you do have links from link farms and bad neighbourhoods, would it effectively pull you down in search engine rankings. Or is it more that it's just a waste of time to get these links, as it adds no value to your ranking.

Are google saying avoid them because it will not have a positive effect, or avoid them becuase it will have a negative effect.

I am under the opinion that it will not harm, but it will not help either. I think this because at the end of the day you are not 100% in control of your inbound links, any bad site could add you and if a competitor, god forbid, wanted to play some black hat games, couldn't they just add you to thousands of bad sites to pull your ranking down?

Interested to hear your opinions on the matter, or any "facts" if they are out there.

Our website currently has what I would call educational and sales pages - which sells our services and also a techy section for the developer community.

The developer pages on the website have some of the highest authority pages that we have and equates for about 50% of the content.

It has been proposed to move the developer pages onto their own domain - away from the main website.

Now, would this crush a lot of the SEO benefit that we have on our main site?

Does anyone know of a workable solution that would help retain the SEO.

Would linking to our main site from the developer site help?

I prefer to refer to link juice as link equity - what is the link worth to you? This all depends on the relationship, the relevancy and the authority that the source of the link has to you.

Ok, so I've been doing a bit of link research and found that most of our competitors use anchor text to link to their homepage on their site and not a specific landing page. Our current strategy is to link to the correct landing page depending on the anchor to get these to rank, as opposed to getting our homepage to rank for different keywords. If that makes sense.

The main reason I can think of to send all links to the homepage is that it would increase the domain authority of the site as a whole. Instead of spreading the links to certain pages depending on the anchor text. It would also give your one page a greater chance to rank for all keywords?

Quick example

I am a site that sells sports clothes. I have 2 main pages from my homepage:

• Homepage
• Football
• Rugby

_Should I link to the football page for all links anchored with "football", and all linked anchored with "rugby" to the rugby page OR should I anchor all links including "rugby" and "football" to the homepage? _

What do you think is the best strategy?

A while ago we purchased some domains that are related to our industry. I'm fairly sceptical about using them, but I am interested what peoples thoughts are.

We are currently producing quite alot of engaging content and although it's industry related, it is sometimes quite broad and not always appropriate for our company blog.

I have been debating whether or not it will be a good idea to use one of the domain names that we have purchased to create more of an industry blog that is off our website.

I'm not sure if this is considered a "black hat" technique by using domains registered to us? And also whether or not Google will punish because we are blogging from the same IP address and linking back to our site ?

Ok, so we currently operate in the UK, Australia, Ireland, Spain and France.

Currently we have a different twitter accounts for each Country. This can be difficult to manage as we are going it all from the UK.

I can understand that having separate accounts for foreign language countries is perhaps suitable (we have foreign staff tweeting in their native tongue), but my question is this:

Is it worth just tweeting all English speaking activity from one account. I mean at the end of the day we are one company, and also our activity in other countries won't effect our followers, in fact wouldn't it just make them realise we are a global brand?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of gradually deleting the other accounts and tweeting all English stuff from the one account?

When I say linking from the "main site", I am talking about the structure of the site.

These landing pages are on the same domain, same host and technically the same site, however they are pages that stand alone (their only purpose is for people to land on). They link from the page to the rest of the site, but there is nowhere on the navigable site to get to that page.

I was wondering if Google (in particular) would punish them for not being a big part of the main site structure. These landing pages are for search terms that are not necessarily products or services, so have no purpose being navigable to.

I am under the impression that bounce rate is a good indicator to Google as to whether the site is relevant to the user. I think that it probably has quite a lot of impact on ranking.

So I thought I would start a discussion as to good ways to decrease bounce rate?

I think if Google realises that the redirect is not helpful to the user you may get punished for it. If it is going to trick a user into visiting your site, then it is frowned upon.

If the domain you buy is highly related to the content on your site, then I would say there is no problem in it. It would almost be helping "users" get from one site to your site for the information they are looking for.

Always keep in mind Google is all about the user satisfaction.

We do a fair amount of work on PPC and because of this a lot of our PPC landing pages also do quite well in SEO. We are thinking that the landing pages do well because they get a lot of traffic from PPC and therefore, maybe google can index and take note of these pages quicker? The pages that usually shoot right up the rankings are new pages used for long tailed keywords.

So I have a few questions:

Does the traffic from PPC actually have any effect on SEO rankings?

If we were to create a page that was to act solely as an SEO landing page, would google take note if there was no traffic?

Would simply linking from our main site to the landing page be enough to give it a bit of authority, in which we can build upon?

From what I understand the links from youtube are a nofllow, which means it will not influence the target page's ranking. A nofollow instructs Google and other search engines to take no notice of the link as a means for authority. Otherwise that would be the perfect way to build links from an authority site.

Links from twitter, facebook, wikipedea are also nofollow.

Basically I want to link from our main website to some of our PPC landing pages (to explain smaller elements of our offering). The reason for this is that the PPC pages are not exactly services but features that people might search for, so these pages are not navigable from the site (unless mentioned on another page). We do not want to include these pages as their own entity on the site, but people may want to click to see an explanation.

So, my question is 2 fold:

1. Should I use an "open link in new window" link, what are the pros and cons of this.

2. Should the link description say that the link will open in a new window. i.e. [Feature name - opens in new window]

What are your opinions on this? I know it may not have much, if any SEO benefit, but from a user point of view I feel it may offer some.
