Exactly, those 73k likes are liking your facebook page, not your site (URL). Test using your facebook page in OSE, how many facebook likes does it show? I am guessing about 73k

It has nothing to do with "where" the like took place, visiting your site, the user can click the LIKE button within your facebook page plugin and they are liking your facebook page, not your Website.

No one knows how or even IF social interactions help rankings, we are all guessing they do, but no one is certainly sure or knows how much they help. That said, a like to your URL is more valuable SEOwise, however, people liking your URL just liked your URL, while if they like your facebook page, you can have constant contact to those users.

You decide whether to have the like button or the like box, both, or a like button with your facebook page as the href. I would actually go with the like box or the like button using my facebook page, that way I can earn users that I can actually reach later.

I'm afraid your colleagues saying that the best way to go is to have it under a subfolder are right. Basically, all search engines consider subdomains as separate domains, meaning that if you put the learning center on learning.website.com will have the same effect as having it on somenewdomain.com, neither will help website.com unless you link from one to the other, and that could be seen as doorway pages which will ultimately hurt more than they could help.

Using a subfolder, any advantage you get from website.com/learn/ will influence website.com without putting website.com at risk (unless you post completely unrelated stuff in that new folder). But as you trying to write about the same niche, it is like basically having a blog. Take this Moz section for example. The community folder in a subfolder under their "money site" and I assure you it is working far better than if it was a subdomain.

Your site in fact lacks of lots of meta description. In the page you posted, you have the OG:DESCRIPTION tag, but not the description tag. If you are using some kind of CMS make sure you have the description tags active, the content could be the same as the one in the OG:DESCRIPTION.

I personally wouldn't go the way you are heading... that could be seen by Google as a technique to manipulate search engine results (which you stated it is).

But to respond to your question, why don't you use the "definitive" version of the page as the canonical? If the one including "near downtown" is the most accurate (and complete one as I guess the hotel IS near downtown) then you should go with that and noindex the alternatives... although I know that's not your intention, that is the way it should be done.

That totally depends on the template you are using. If the template does not have that as an option, then you can code your own author snippet to show in each post.

If you are unfamiliar with Wordpress coding, I would suggest you hire an experienced designer/coder to achieve what you are looking for. Freelancer.com is a good and cheap source of coders.

You should check your entire HTML code, there seems to be lots of issues there, for example:

• The tags do not have closure tag ( NO), just like the image tags.
• You have JS syntax errors.
• Your site seems slow from my end, consider gzip compression and minifying and unifying resources.

Took a quick look at your site. Those affiliate links are nofollow, so you are safe on that matter.

You are also adding valuable content (is it unique? written specifically for the offer?), which is actually great and it is what Google wants.

So, in my humble opinion you are everything that you are supposed to do. Keep it that way!

Unfortunately no. Moz gets your traffic number because you allowed access to your Analytics. There's no way to know others if you don't have access to their Analytics.

There are sites that provide some open metrics, but almost all are inaccurate: Alexa, Compete, etc unless you installed their tracking code.

There are over 200 factors Google considers to rank sites. I've seen sites that are just published being ranked above sites with over 7 or more years in business. It all changes and their algorithm is always trying to guess what is the visitor looking for.

In my niche, there are 2 sites above me, ranked 2nd and 3rd, with no authority, no backlinks, no content, not a good design/page/service, etc, still they are STILL there.

The data Moz shows can give you a CLUE on how is your site performing, but it will be even better if you see their data as trends. For example, you start to create new content daily, GOOD, interesting content, you then see a boost in your rankings, still not getting the place you think you deserve, don't worry, that trend shows you that creating content is working, keep doing it.

You can also ask for some help in the Google Webmaster Forums, the guys there are usually rude, but almost always right

Our scenario:

http://domain.com and http://domain.com/index both load with the same content, with the proper canonical tag, and we are not getting any duplicate content warning (or titles and desc's).

Implementing the redirect at the server level will be much better as you can redirect all pages to their correspondent page in the .com version.

You will need the URL-rewrite extension: http://www.iis.net/downloads/microsoft/url-rewrite

Then create a "Canonical Hostnames" rule to redirect the other domains.

As Tim pointed, it is a common practice on examiner to nofollow their outbound links.

I personally found that disgusting... (regardless the site doing it) they are "profiting" with what you wrote while not giving you any credit. Yeah, I also get the point of being featured on their site, organic link traffic, etc. but still, they are quoting me, naturally, why not linking naturally too.

My quick guess, is that they do so many product reviews, they are just covering their a***s against any advertorial accusation that could led to a penalty...

I agree, it doesn't make any sense. I would redirect everything instead to a subfolder:

example.domain.com -> domain.com/example

example.domain.com/page-1 -> domain.com/example/page-1

Hmm... my best guess is that if the content remains the same, that means that you have the same contents on boo.com and foo.com, then just simply do a page by page redirection, that will carry as many value as possible to the new pages.

However, you if you do not have the same pages available on both domains, then there are a couple of things you can do:

• Not the exact same content on the new domain: redirect to what you think is the best match.
• No similar content on the new domain:
                                                         - Option 1: Redirect to a page (sort of a landing page) showing similar pages that the user might be interested in.
                                                         - Option 2: Redirect to a landing page or homepage.

You could use rel canonical from one to the other (defining the main one) and rel alternate for one to the other. Only one content gets indexed and Google will display in their results the appropriate version to the user's location.

If those indexed by Google are showing up as the extra-domain.com instead of the primary domain.com and showing the description of the primary domain.com then you are risking your site to a backdoor penalty, which will cause a lot of harm.

My best advise: 301 redirect all those domains to the corresponding page of your primary domain.

Example:

• extra-domain.com 301 redirects to domain.com
• extra-domain.com/page1 301 redirects to domain.com/page1

PS: What was the idea behind purchasing 70+ domains? are those product domains? such as for example apple does (itunes.com redirects to apple's itunes page)?

There are some tools that can build the sitemap automatically setting all those values, like <cite>www.xml-sitemaps.com</cite>

But, the best answer would be to use:

• Page caching frequency: How many times your pages' content change?
• Last modified: return the actual file last modification date (dynamic? do that using the DB last update date).
• Priority: Set the priority to 1 to your most important pages and then start lower it for the others (less important, less priority).

Again, xml-sitemaps can handle almost everything (the standalone version (paid)).

It's time to stop thinking about link building and start with link earning. That actually is the ONLY way to get natural backlinks.

Forcing you to "create" content just for the purpose of a link will surely make the content irrelevant, and therefore loosing the " link earning" part.

Write/create/post what can really be interesting to your audience, and when you feel the need to.

Ah you mean that if the dates of the reservation changes then it creates a duplicate page content?

If that's the case, you should use the rel="canonical" the definite page, no dates selected, just the page that shows the property.

Anyway, is a not-confirmed update so it could also be the disavow file doing its work. If some of the links you disavowed were the reason of the ranking drop, then you actually got those rankings with artificially created links. So don't remove them from the disavow file because of the drop, just focus on getting new ones. How? Content!

You can redirect the site safely as long as site B doesn't have any algorithm or manual penalty applied, if it does, redirecting the site will actually redirect the penalty too.

If you are sure you don't have any penalty, then you can apply a 301 to site A and also notify Google of the URL change.

As for the first question, if the content is exactly the same then any of the two could be suffering an algo penalty, in that case, a 301 should "remove" the penalty as the content is no longer duplicate on 2 different sites, but published only in 1.

The site in question has low authority compared to the ones showing up in the first page. Google is somehow associating your brand with a software called "Free Studio" and sites with almost impossible to beat authority are ranking above.

Google, compared to Bing (and Yahoo! that serves results from Bing), uses different ranking mechanisms.

In order to "claim" your brand's name, I'd suggest you establish several business listings pointing to the site, such as:

• Facebook Page
• Twitter Profile
• G+ Page
• G+ Local
• LinkedIn Page
• Crunchbase
• Yelp
• etc.

Try to put your company out there, expose its name as much as you can without purchasing any "featured listing." Once you have all those steps completed, compare results and see if the brand name starts to show up.

Another approach would be to "extend" the brand name, removing the FS and using the actual significance of those 2 letters ("FS" means?). It should be easier to compete with other sites instead of the ones that are currently returned by your brand query: "FS Studio". Softonic, CNET, afterdawn are not easy targets.

I would definitely go with www.example.com/cityname. It isn't just easier to maintain, but it will be much easier to rank as any link juice received in www.example.com/cityname1 will also affect www.example.com and www.example.com/cityname2, which in the end, will make even easier for new cities that you add later.

Having domains including the city and linking to each other will probably be seen as an EMD which will affect all domains.

Not directly. However you could implement an internal tracking method by looking at the referrer "google.com", "bing.com" and "yahoo.com" (+ any other major source you would like to track) and then set a session variable to track the visitor around the site and finally, if he/she converts you can fire an Analytics event based on that session variable.

Each field is actually intended for something different:

• Title: should be what is the image. In this case: orange campervan
• Caption: Is what shows up under the image describing it to users visiting the page. In this case: orange campervan in cornwall, UK blah blah.
• Alt Text: Should be an image description that appears when the browser can't (for some reason) display the image. In this case can be either "orange campervan", "Image of orange campervan" or whatever you think describes best the image when somebody can't see it.
• Description: Is just that, a short, brief description of the image contents.

Ohhh the 1 million question... Why Google show different results depending on the browser, computer, connections, etc...?

It is certainly known that Google WILL show what "he" thinks might be more useful to the user searching. They DO track what you searched, visited, etc, even if you are not logged in, they WILL deliver personalized results based on several (yet unknown) variables, some are location, device, browser, etc. You can even search with the same account, computer and different browsers and get different results, for some reason they think a search within the same device, and account, but with a different browser should deliver different results (this isn't always the case, but in my experience I found this kind of results regularly). The device is "understandable", pages may look different in different devices, so perhaps a page that is ranking well on a desktop, doesn't rank too well on a mobile device as it may be "unreadable" while on an iphone (for example). So is the location, they want to deliver more local results, and that is also understandable.

What I would suggest is this cases, is that you take ONE of the ways you track and then stick to it to run your reports, Moz uses (I think) this type of query: https://www.google.com/search?q=auto body calgary&gl=us&pws=0 (I almost find the same results as they report using that).

To answer your second question, it is also kind of a mystery, we cannot control what Google shows, and they will show what they think is for the best interest of the user. So even if you create a landing page for a specific word, that word SERP may show your homepage instead of the page you created or the other way around... Who knows...

Is the site still getting customers accessing the site directly? As if you established a brand name, that people is used to, I should consider cleaning up the domain instead.

I've done it myself, 95% of the links were toxic according to Link Dtox, we tried disavowing just the worse ones, reconsideration declined, then we disavowed over 1500 domains and left around 50 that were healthy links, reconsideration approved and penalty revoked. The very next day we started seeing 100% increase in search traffic, and although we are not ranking as high as we expected, Google's Matt Cutts told a few days ago that even after a penalty is removed, it may take some time until Google trust the site again.

All the work was done KNOWING that we couldn't just "dump" the domain as we had over 100,000 customers accessing our site directly. And if you change to a new domain and redirect the penalized one, chances are the new domain gets the hit too.

So as a first step, I would ask myself if it is worth the clean, depending on how many direct traffic you have, brand, etc.

When you make the switch and "unplug the plug" from the new site to plug it in the new site, they are basically different sites to Google, so you need a new GWT site for the https version (you also need the www and non-www. versions, and wouldn't hurt to have both for both https and http.

What you are seeing now, is Google reindexing your content. Totally normal. It takes a while while Google removed all your HTTP pages and add the HTTPS pages to their index, there's nothing you need to worry about.

Do the other variant verifications and submit a new sitemap with the HTTPS pages to the version that is now being indexed.

I did about 7 switches so far and all went well with exactly the same pattern. Impressions start dropping on the HTTP while increasing in HTTPS (takes longer to start showing numbers in the HTTPS than what it takes for the HTTP to lower those).

If your ads are disapproved and others (which you KNOW they are not authorized to use the trademarked names and still do, report those ads to Adwords. They will remove the ads braking TOS).

But, if you are allowed by the trademark holder to use their names in the ads, just ask for a written authorization and send it back to Google, hopefully they will look into it.

For the HTML improvements to refresh, it could take a while. If you already fixed the issues displayed, just sit tight.

As for the fetch as G bot, if you made changes, then submit the fetch to the index, it will increase the possibility if being re-indexed faster, but it gives you no guarantee.

You have done the necessary steps (disallowing in robots plus setting a noindex tag). There's shouldn't be anything to worry about. If you want to be entirely sure, you can add some HTTP authentication to the folder so only those knowing the credentials can access (you could find that some robots may not follow the disallow flag or noindex tag).

Actually it would be worse. As Doorway pages are pages that link to your domain from other domains. And subdomains are considered separate domains, therefore a page that its only purpose is to drive traffic to the main page is a doorway page, which is against google TOS.

I suggest you download your "latest links" from Google Webmaster tools to verify if the report is/isn't an OSE issue. If Google also shows all those new links, then you might want to look a much closer look and if those are spammy backlinks, start disavowing before getting any penalty.

Well, just took a look at your subdomain links and there's nothing bad there. You can go ahead and remove the subdomain placing a 301 to your homepage.

It isn't a bad idea at all. That page actually links to your site and even adds the "continue reading" text. That's a link earned! And that's how we all should "build" links.

I don't think there's a way to tell Google what to show. However, if you are building your site in such a way that it has content markup (such as schema, microformats or using the highligh tool in WMT), you are basically telling Google that that is the best way to display the search results.

If you actually prefer to show the meta description (although it is impossible to force Google to do it), you should remove whatever markup you have in your site, then let Google just display what it wants (hopefully your meta description).

PS: the keywords tag isn't used by Google anymore, that's a useless tag you can safely removed. However, Bing said that they still use the keywords meta but it is just one of over 2000 ranking signals they use. So it's basically up to you use it /don't use it (you won't find a big site making use of the keywords meta anymore).

Seems that your structured data is well implemented. I would give it a break and hopefully, within 2 more weeks, Google data will start to show up. It actually takes same time for Google to re-crawl your site.

Suggestion: Use G+ publisher markup.

Workaround: Use Google's Data Highlighter and it will actually crawl and index your markup faster.

Does your friend have FTP access? If he/she does, then put a 301 redirect from the one you want to rank to the other. Having a site with "www" and without is actually having 2 pages with the same content, something you can easily fix by redirecting the entire domain to the other with a 301 response.

If he/she does have FTP access, look for the .htaccess file and put the following:

RewriteEngine On

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !=businessname.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://businessname.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Remember to change "businessname.com" with the actual domain name.

I think you did the right thing. Engines will take a while until they re-crawl your robots.txt and actually following what you commanded.

Extra steps I would take:

• 302 the redirect, probably is just a line of code doing the redirect after setting some cookies or session variables.
• Try to edit the affiliate codes to work with Javascript instead of naked URLs ( could be something like <ins class="affiliate">that is later switched to a text link or banner using JS). This will not only allow you to set a nofollow for those links, but you could be able to remove/block specific affiliates or pages where you don't want your links/banners.</ins>
  

PS: have you tried fetching your robots.txt from Google WT (Crawl -> Blocked URLs) to see when was it downloaded and id the contents are ok?
