If these pages are database driven, you can check to see if the post is in the database, if not, then 301 back to the root page for jobs.

Run a PHP script that check the database TRUE = loads the page FALSE header redirect to root page (or whatever you want) and  301 the move.

Your developer will be able to actually write a valid script testing the page and either returning the job post or redirecting the page.

If I read this correctly. Two links on one page pointing to the same page. One in a menu, one in the body copy.

That is perfectly fine. Google will only count the first instance of the link, but does tend to give more weight to body copy links.

That right there is the key to this thread. You need to first find which keywords are being searched via Google Keyword Tool, then optimize your site for perhaps two of these top terms.

A good place to put those other keywords would be image names and images description copy (if you put copy below the image to describe it). So instead of just Mickey-Cards.jpg you would replace cards with alternate keyword. Image names are not real high on Google's list, but it will help to build out a broader keyword list without messing up the flow of your page. Also, now looking at your site, you have images with item numbers below that. Would it be too much to add some text below the image and above the item number. Smaller font, not bold, but italic?

Also, no-follow links (twitter, facebook, etc) are a good place to put alternate keywords. They don't pass juice, but are still counted as referrals. Use this same logic when building all your links. Very important links use your tier 1 keyword, lesser links, use alternative keywords.

Yes, this actually might take a few months depending on the site linking to you. And as EGOL has pointed out, great unique content, then promote it. I would add promoting in social networks as well. Always include ShareThis and Facebook LIKE on each page of content as this will help people share the content.

You are going to have to have a much stronger link building campaign as mentioned with very good anchor text to compete with most keywords.

This looks like a perfect news story for Dawn. If you do not have a list of the Twitter followers, release a press statement or article stating what happened and ask people to re-join.

What are you converting? To email sign ups? Sales? Contacting the company? First define that, then make sure that is in their face all the time!

I put our email sign up form in the footer and our sign ups have grown. I have a 'Email Us' in the header. Phone numbers everywhere.

People might not know what you want them to do once they are done reading the page. Make sure you tell them what the next step is.

If it is a landing page, try taking all other content off the page except for the exact message they linked there to read and the next step; your conversion.

Links I do not have at the moment, but here is what you need to consider.

a) is the Flash having to do with the content or navigation of the site, or just cool features not related.

a1) If so, does the Flash contain actual text which can be indexed by Google/Bing. If you just have images within your Flash, that will not help you much with SEO.

b) If your site is based on Flash, does it have an HTML equivalent?

c) Does your site rely on mobile browsing? iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) does not support Flash.

I agree with Barry, but watch out for that last snippet. I've got caught when hosting companies redirect on their side. So test before walking away for more coffee : )

You are being displaced by sites with much stronger domain authority. Yours is 22 and you are competing against sites with 60+.

You need more links from strong sites. You only have 19 linking root domains compared to sites having thousands.

I would also start using social networking by including Facebook LIKE and ShareThis on each product.

All that I would say is that much stronger sites have come into the market and pushed you down.

a) Work on on-page optimization to ensure keywords are optimized

b) build strong inbound links

c) get your social on

Well John, you are doing a lot of things correctly.

Anchor text coming into your page is over 200 links with paint within the anchor

I would bet that the XML is optimized using the paint keyword, and that you are ranking higher in video search due to optimizing on this keyword. (I actually see you 3 down from your YouTube post?)

You do not show up within the top 50 using SEOmoz ranks tracker.

Hi Brent, as one photographer to another, I would like to comment : )

• Start long tail on Title and page copy, but direct on image alt tags.
• Segregate your site according to topic then using those keywords.
• Make certain you tweet and Facebook your photos.
• Do not use Flash unless WP will build out an HTML equivalent.
• Be sure to put Facebook Likes and ShareThis on each photo page. That is, each image should have its own page with page copy and Likes and ShareThis buttons.

You can use photographer and photography interchangeably within the page copy and switch this out amongst the page titles.

Click on each URL to see what page launches.

Looking at some of the URLs, it shows that there is a sort being done. Most likely from a product search where you might sort by price. This is where canonicals come in play.

Age of links are not what is important and have no factor in rankings or passing of juice. However, the older a link is, the more likely it is to gain more authority and therefore pass more juice.

Again, age is not the factor but the importance of the page containing the link.

With HTML or XML sitemaps you can link from one to another.

sitemap = Main sitemap [I would put the main sitemap on all upper level site pages (root, contact us, etc.]

sitemap-cat-01 which then links to all other sitemaps for that category [category sitemap on that category's page]

Then register the individual sitemaps with Google Webmaster.

At a quick look I would say the name and ALT of your images are the issue.

That sux as an ALT text. This does not describe the image at all, which is the intent of the ALT tag for screen readers to help the visually impaired.

fine art photographers is Highly competitive so you probably won't rank for that any time soon. If you go with weaker keywords in the Title and page copy, then you will rank for those and get some backlinks. Backlinks will strengthen your page/site and then you can start to rank for more competitive keywords.

Using the alt tag for generic competitive keywords will help build that ranking for those keywords as supportive keyword phrases.

Try fine art portrait photographers for a title and work your way back once your page has authority.

It is like when you search for something. You use the direct search query then modify it to narrow the search.

With webpages that do not have any authority, broaden the keyword to start, then narrow as you grow strength. I suggested to use an underlining metric such as the alt tag to start the keyword ranking for more narrow phrases.

When you build links manually, build them for the narrow keywords. Organic links will naturally use the current Title or the sites URL, or category. Hopefully.

Subfolders (categories) rank well as long as a) you have inbound links with good anchor text b) that landing page is keyword optimized.

This way your home page, which gets most of the links, will have fewer links to in-site pages and thus they will pass greater link juice. Then those category pages will have links to deeper pages and pass juice to them.

This is good structurally from a navigational perspective and from a linking perspective.

No not at all. I do this for all old product that have fallen off. I redirect them back to their category page (not the home page).

I would however, not try to do this in the htaccess file, but within the head of php page. This automates the process and keeps you from having to manually change the htaccess file often and gives you a way to evaluate the URL to determine the best place to redirect to.

What is your site about? Is it local in nature? With these questions answered, you have a good place to start. If your site is GEO limited, say in a State or City, then look into forums, blogs, and sites dealing in those locations. Getting links from local sites really helps Google see that your site is local to that area.

If your site is about photography (my personal love) then find relevant sites and get links from them. Perhaps you can reply to blog post with a link to your site in your signature area. (warning: if your post are just 'visit me', then you may be banned from the site. Have something important to add).

I really like reaching out into the local community as these people should be more receptive to you because they may know you or at least have some connection to you being neighbors.

You can also start getting links from directories as these are easy and cheap, but not often great authority.

General rules:

Look for sites that are relevant, have high PA, and allow for custom anchor text.

Blogging and Guest Blogging are great also. People love to link to great content so blog away. Give a different slat to your content or include information others do not have. If your site is not popular yet, guest blog for others which will allow for links back to your site. Of course you want to market these blog post by putting them on Facebook and Twitter.

If your mobile site has the same content as your full version, then the mobile site should canonicalize to the full version.

This is how you handle duplicate content.

Fine Art Photography is a highly competitive keyword where Fine Art Portrait Photography is not as much.

You 12 month goal is to rank for Fine Art Photography, but you know you can't now.

Inbound links that can't change I would set to Fine Art Photography and point to the page that has all other metrics set to Fine Art Portrait Photography. Google will pick this up fine as they are relevant to each other. Unlike Red Tulip Photography is not relevant to Fine Art Photography (keyword wise).

I would set most image alt tags for Fine Art Photography while page Title and page copy all point to the more broad term Fine Art Portrait Photography.

The idea is to rank for the broader term while setting up rankings for future narrower terms. You will get traffic due to targeting the broad term and build inbound organic links. As you do, the site will strengthen, and you can try and compete for the narrow term, which the page/site is already prepped.

Now let me address this Red Tulip Photography. This phrase is not the same as Fine Art Photography and as such, what I suggest will not apply. I would in this instance set a page to talk about Red Tulip Photography on its own, perhaps a blog post that would include all page metrics pointing to this keyword phrase.

Correct, you don't, but you don't want it ignored either. Use the canonical attribute to refer back to the original content and transfer authority and juice.

Yes, you can get down the chain too many times and your browser just pukes. And likely Google will give up.

1. Test the OLD page(2) to see if it has any inbound links or page authority. If not, then a redirect is not necessary. Yes, the page still might be indexed, but I would do a header redirect with a 301 instead of using the .htaccess file. It is on the fly and much cleaner.

Depending on how your site is coded, you can test the page in PHP.

1. Find incoming URL
2. Test against database
3. Send to new location

Simply take the incoming URL and pull the location in the _HEADER. Then look at your database that you set up with all these redirects. Then redirect the user to the new page and 301 the redirect in the header.

All the work you do is then in the database. Look at Google Webmaster for 404 pages and adjust the database. I would also then state that if I found no URL within the database (good or old) then I would redirect to the home page and 301 that. This way you do not lose any link juice and keep your 301 chain down to one dynamic hop.

Maybe. Google does reserve the right to not flow canonical indicators when it sees no need to. Canonical is for duplicate content, therefore if Google does not see duplicate content, it will probably not flow the juice to page 5.

I use PA and DA to show authority and open a dialog as to what authority is and how to obtain higher authority through good link building. This give me the other side of the SEO coin; relevancy being the other.

You can work on some longtail keywords. Try some social keywords like actress, or model, or something along those lines. There are always related words to what people do, or their industry. Pick a main theme of the page and work from there.

I do not think you are overusing the name as the site is all about this client correct?

Not sure I understand GA does show visits from Bing, and if you want to track paid search on Bing, then either have a landing page just for Bing or use tracking code on the Bing links.

Great question. I tend to just map it out by hand categories / sub categories / products/services but I can see how that can get quite daunting on very large sites.

If the site is authoritative and you are already exhausted your bank of keywords, then just pull the main topic off the page and fill with that.

The problem seems to be that you already rank for the keywords that are important, so other could just draw poor traffic. Such as using the directors name or other actors. This could draw traffic, but poor traffic.

In short, you are simply trying to fill titles without duplication and you already have exhausted your keyword list on other pages? Then use page topics as keywords.

I agree it depends with the crawl rate on the site.Updating a new sitemap helps if you are adding new URLs and posting new content on Facebook, Twitter, Blogs gets the attention of Google, so if it seems to be going slow, try getting social.

Regarding the should you, I would look at me analytics and see how many mobile platforms are accessing your site and which ones. Mobile apps should not be just a rehashed version of the web page. It should be unique and much better than the web version. You need to find out why people are accessing your site on mobile platforms. Convenience, travel, or platform of choice? I would survey those mobile visitors with 3-5 simple question about mobile content.

I would not see any need of SEO on an application, just like there is none for your desktop apps. Mobile apps are more concerned with ease of use, content access (is it localized or in the cloud).

I will revisit this post to hear what others say on finding a good mobile programmer. I am looking for one for iOS work for a client.
