I wouldn't look at number of links on a page in a complete vacuum. Disclaimer, I haven't reviewed your site. Keep in mind that your site's authority matters in terms of how a search engine will Carl your site (length of time, number of pages, etc). Are all the links on your pages getting crawled and indexed (gwmt)? Have you tried testing whether a page solely linked from a page containing many links, from a link after those links, gets crawled? This might be a better indication of whether you truly have too many.

What "Fresh" Ideas Are You Executing?
At SES Chicago, the "freshness" topic came up in a couple convos. There were also some, what I would call, crazy ideas intended to take advantage of freshness. I have been reading up here: http://searchenginewatch.com/article/2125272/Google-Freshness-and-Temporal-Data
Most of the suggestions that I heard seemed more likely to look like spam signals than freshness signals.
Are you paying attention to "freshness"? Are you "freshening up" old content? Has it altered your content strategy otherwise?
If so, how?

RE: Where is the best place to put reciprocal links on our website?
While I generally agree with Alan above, if you're going to do recip links, I'd try to work them into the context of your site on different pages.

RE: What's the best SEO management system for link building and reporting?
I've used Caphyon's Advanced Link Manager with some success.

RE: Looking for quality, cheap web design company recommendations
This is a great thread. I've also tried the foreign outsource thing. It's been hit or miss. I guess my question would be what's cheap?

RE: Should I bother with branded keywords in my onsite SEO improvements?
I think Mike has it right. The short answer is that you want both branded and non-branded signals. You should prioritize branded vs. unbranded based upon your brand, the marketplace for the products or services you offer, and how people research and shop for what you're offering.
As for on-page title conventions, I like:
unbranded term | call to action | brand
or
unbranded term | brand | unbranded/call to action
Just some general guidelines.

RE: Is there such a concept as 'Social Juice'?
In word, yes. But just as I wouldn't focus too much on PageRank influencing/sculpting/manipulation, I wouldn't focus too much on "Social Juice" influencing/sculpting/manipulation.
In other words, there is search value in conversing, engaging, and participating online. However, just like if you try to create artificial link signals, creating artificial social signals is likely to have little to no impact. My two cents.

Are they nofollowed?

Can someone explain why I have been seeing an increase in the number of Linking Page URLs in OSE that link directly to downloads?
Ever since the last couple Linkscape updates when doing competitive back link analysis I have noticed a large increase in the number of URLs of Linking Pages in OSE that result in an immediate file download. The majority of the time these downloads are not common files ie PDF, DOC files.
For example, these were all in a competitors back link profile:
http://download.unesp.br/linux/debian/pool/main/i/isc-dhcp/isc-dhcp-relay-dbg_4.1.1-P1-17_ia64.deb
http://snow.fmi.fi/data/20090210_eurasia_sd_025grid.mat
These are just a few I came across for a single competitor. Is this sketchy black hat SEO, some sort of error, actual links, or something else?
Any information on this subject would be helpful.
Thank you.

RE: Decrease in Organic Traffic Due to Google Places
Albeit not working with franchises, we have seen a similar trend for several clients. In fact, we have seen decreases in organic traffic with increases in call volume.

RE: How are you implementing TAGFEE?
I try to apply TAGFEE as much as possible. Here are just a couple for biz:
T - show my clients what I'm planning on doing, how we do it, and advantages and disadvantages of going in a certain direction.
A - To me, this is just being me as opposed to some faceless logo, website, or trade name.
G - I try to spend as much time as I can offering free info, advice, help.
F - Like most of us, I probably need more of this. I try to integrate "fun" into proposals, discussions, posts, etc.
E - Some people are naturally better w/ empathy than others. For me, a lot of it comes down to communication. If someone (colleague or client) seems off, find a way to ask them what's up w/o putting them on defensive.
E - Listen. Learn. Teach. Do these things well and you might just be able to get yourself "above the noise."

Kissmetrics
I have been playing with the 30-day trial of Kissmetrics: https://www.kissmetrics.com/
Anyone using this?
I like their "person-focused" approach. Wanted to get mozzers' opinions.
Thanks

RE: Get CSV from OSE
Thanks for the update Casey. Ironically, my inability to access OSE reports has been a reminder of how dependent I am on them. Perhaps to much so...

Get CSV from OSE
Having trouble getting csv from OSE via email. Anyone else? Solutions?

OSE Update: No direct .csv Export
Playing around w/ OSE post update. Love that there are social signals. Having issues with exporting to .csv via email.
What's the reasoning behind this change?
Anyone have any solutions for circumventing (i.e. downloading data directly to excel via API)?

Webmaster Tools 404 Errors Pages Never Created
Recently, 196 404 errors appeared in my WMT account for pages that were never created on my site.
Question: Any thoughts on how they got there (i.e. WMT bug, tactic by competitor)?
Question: Thoughts on impact if any?
Question: Thoughts on resolution?

Switching Hosting & SEO
Hello friends,
We are facing the prospect of switching to a new hosting account or company. We are currently using a third-party reseller account but are outgrowing that account. We are considering VPS and dedicated servers. However, this will mean updates for IPs and nameservers.
Does anyone have experience with SEO consequences of making switch?
Best practices? Tips? Obstacles?
Any and all comments/advice welcome.
We're trying to balance the potential SEO ramifications of making the switch with the consequences of reduced site speed.

Thanks Shaun. My Calendar revolves around Moz.

Content Delivery Network
Anyone have a good reference for implementing a content delivery network? Any SEO pitfalls with using a CDN (brief research seems to indicate no problems)?
I seem to recall that SEOmoz was using Amazon Web Services (AWS) for CDN. Is that still the case?
All CDN & AWS experiences, advice, references welcomed!

RE: How is an SEO's time best used?
First, spend some time auditing technical aspects. Be sure you're not "getting in your own way" by doing something technically unsound (duplicating page titles, robots.txt problems, etc).
I also suggest dedicating a majority of resources to content. It would be helpful to know a little more about the nature of your sites.
After content, I would dedicate the remaining resources to link building in the form of getting your best content in front of the right audiences. That's your most efficient shot at acquiring new links, shares, etc.

Linkscape Update July 7 or 11 or both?
The Linkscape Update Calendar lists two updates in July (7th and 11th).
http://apiwiki.seomoz.org/w/page/25141119/Linkscape-Schedule
For some internal calendaring, it would be helpful to know which date the update will roll.
And as always, thank you very much for the great tools.

RE: Historical inbound links
We use advanced links manager with SEOmoz's Linkscape. You can also compare your OSE reports over time.
-
RE: Google said that low-quality pages on your site may affect rankings on other parts
Depending on the nature and quality of your content, you may also want to consider removing article pages that might be hurting your domain.

RE: What's the best way to discover which search terms competitors are highly-ranked for?
I look at this problem like this. First, identify what your target keywords are. Then, identify who your competitors are for your keywords.

Filtering OSE Results
Issue: When I export OSE Linking Pages results to .CSV, I'd like to filter only unique domains.
It seems to me that there should be a way to do this with Excel, perhaps pivot table.
Anyone have a quick solution for this?
Alternatively, I can use Linking Domains, which gives all unique roots, but then i lose follow/nofollow filter.
Thoughts?
