Changing Business Addresses
Anyone have a good local search "best practices" resource for advising a client who is changing business addresses (aside from cross your fingers).
For example, order of updating local citations (website first, google places, others).
Time frame for update to take effect? Other issues folks have faced in updating addresses?
I regularly follow David Mihm, Mike Blumenthal, & Andrew Shotland, I was just curious what the Moz community might be able to add.
Thanks.

RE: Social Media Links
I selectively use nofollows to social media profiles. In some circumstances, I want to build some authority to my social media profiles. However, I don't want to haemorrhage PR by creating 5 outbound links every time I create a post.
However, I also follow the WWMD mantra (what would moz do) and they follow links to their profiles...

RE: How many follow ups before giving up?
I think both sides of the earlier responses have merit. However, successful link requests are less about brute force and more about thinking strategically. First, in my experience, unsolicited emails of any kind are a total waste of time, or at least extremely inefficient (not to mention very annoying). Not a good way to start a relationship.
Think about your link requests more like business relationships and less like a sale. Would you spam your colleagues? Your boss?
How do communicate with other professionals? Use that as a template for thinking about how to contact link targets. And don't call them link targets ; ).

RE: Website Structure - What works best for passing the Link Juice?
I'd check out Bill Slawski's SEO By The Sea generally, and this post in particular: http://www.seobythesea.com/?p=5168
I wouldn't get "too manipulative" with CSS. I know this advice is going to sound generic, but I'd think about what links are most likely to get clicked by your visitors. Those are the ones that Google wants to give more credit.

RE: Does social media really work?
It "works" but it depends on what/how you're measuring it. Great for getting your content in front of audiences that can further share, publicize, and link to your content. Not so great for advertising...

RE: Do "big" SEO companies remove links after termination of service?
Have I heard of this? Yes.
Is it a legitimate concern? Yes, but the impact of the links being removed depends on whether those links are "being counted by Google." If these "rented links" aren't being counted (or contributing very little), then their removal won't really matter.
Are the links indexed? Are they on domains that rank? What are the PA's & DA's for these links?

RE: UBL or LocalEZE? Local listing submission vendor.
We use both. The key is to make sure that biz information submitted is consistent on both.

RE: What are some of your best tips, strategies or resources for link building?
Why is it so difficult to get management to accept the fact that managing a website is an ongoing and constantly changing process that involves research and experimentation?
+1 for competitive analysis. Show your client what their competitors are doing and what impact their efforts are having. In my experience, even if they don't quite "get it", they will be forced to acknowledge that their competitors are, and that can be enough to drive them to understand this. Especially when you can show changes over time.

SEO Industry Contracts, Resumes, & Jobs
We're in the process of looking to hire link builders & content managers in the Chicago area. While I know it's not a "core function" of SEOmoz, the SEO Industry Jobs section has been very helpful to us. Unfortunately, it's not easily searchable/filterable by geography.
I think the Moz resume & job-board could be a lot more helpful with some updates, including filter by geography.
Anyone else have any suggestions?

RE: Influence of users' comments on a page (on-page SEO)
I think comments are a ranking factor. I think that we will also see who comments (i.e. author rank) become more important than merely having comments too.

Google Docs Paranoia
Recently, there has been a lot of great information on SEOmoz about using Google Apps, Docs, etc. However, I suffer from Google paranoia (the fear that Google can see what's going on in my Google products). Is this fear unreasonable? Should I be concerned about using Google Apps, docs, analytics, etc. for SEO data (including keyword position tracking, back link analysis, etc)?

RE: URL Length
C. If you have categories and sub-categories, than there is value to organizing your site to reflect that. If you are creating sub-categories for the sake of sub-categories, then I would go with B.
It really depends on the nature of what your site is about. For example, /shoes/running-shoes/specific-shoe-type/ makes sense. However, /shoes/running-shoes/red-running-shoes/red-running-shoes-velcro/red-running-shoes-velcro-hi-top/specific-shoe/ is probably too long.

RE: Are paid directories considered paid links?
Great question. It really depends on the directory. As a general rule, if the directory is advertising that is "sells links," those links are likely to be valueless, or potentially even detrimental.
On the other hand, directories that have fees for "editorial review" (i.e. dir.yahoo.com, etc), are less likely to have that problem.
Generally speaking, if a directory is specifically relevant to your site (i.e. content and/or geography), the directory will likely have more value than a general biz, or non-relevant directory.
I also like to stick to relevant directories with DA equal to or higher than the site that I'm submitting.
In my humble opinion, the value of submitting to a large number of low quality directories, as well as, article directories, is very low if not non-existent.
However, if you find higher quality directory links in your competitors' back link profiles, they may be worth the investment.

RE: SEOmoz Toolbar vs. Opensiteexplorer
Thanks Jennifer, I think my issue is with the way Caphyon's Advanced Link Manager is accessing SEOmoz's linkscape API.
-
RE: SEOmoz Toolbar vs. Opensiteexplorer
Thanks Daniel. I think my issue has something to do with the way my SEOmoz Pro account is integrating with Caphyon Advanced Link Manager.
For some reason it's not pulling all the domains from linkscape.
-
SEOmoz Toolbar vs. Opensiteexplorer
Dumb question, why is the SEOmoz Toolbar reporting vastly different data than opensitexplorer?
I had assumed they pulled from the same data set. False assumption? Am I misinterpreting the metrics?
The discrepancies with which I am most confused are differences in number of root linking domains between OSE and Toolbar.
Please enlighten me.

Best Practices For Google Analytics
Does anyone have any recommendations or resources for best practices in using Google Analytics. Specifically, as they relate to SEO and managing and monitoring several websites (i.e. registering/managing multiple accounts vs. master account, etc).

RE: Porn link ...
One link, linking to you from porn site? I don't think it will have any impact. If you think about it, if that caused a problem, you could just add links from porn sites to your competitors. Definitely don't link to porn sites, unless of course, you own a porn site.

RE: Which of these elements are good / bad link building practices?
100 ARTICLE SUBMISSIONS [APPROVED ARTICLES] -> 1 article submitted to 100 article directories
What is the "quality" and "relevance" of the directory to your article's subject. Are the articles unique versions or the same article submitted to 100 directories?
If unique article versions added to topically relevant higher quality directories, with optimized back link, then good.
- 50 PRESS RELEASE SUBMISSIONS [APPROVED & SCREENSHOTS]-> 1 PR writing & submissions to top 50 PR distribution sites each
Eh, depends on price and quality of press release. Is it newsworthy? There are plenty of services in which you can do it yourself. I would say it primarily depends on whether your press release is news worthy or just an ad.
- 150 PRIVATE BLOGS SUBMISSION [APPROVED ARTICLES] -> 1 article submitted to 150 private blogs submission
This is likely to be garbage. Same rules as article directories above.
- 100 WEBSITE DIRECTORY SUBMISSION -> 1 url (home page) submitted to 100 top free web directories
Likely worthless. But depends on directories. Are they truly the "top"? Perhaps more impt. if they allow full business citations. Are they geographically relevant? Topically relevant?
- 50 SOCIAL BOOKMARKING [CONFIRMED LINKS] -> 1 url of site submitted to top 50 social bookmarking websites
Most likely garbage, imho.
- 40 PROFILE BACK-LINKS [CONFIRMED LINKS] -> 1-3 url's of site submitted and create 40 profile websites
What sites?
- 50 SEARCH ENGINES -> submission to all the major search engines
Garbage.
- 20 NEWS WEBSITES -> Ping all links from reports to news websites
Really depends. Likely garbage.
Hoped this helped.

RE: What link tracking solution do you use?
Linkscape & Advanced Link Manager.

RE: Using Wordpress as CMS for large Websites
add a +1 from me for wordpress. As mentioned above, there are several large sites using it effectively.
-
RE: Which is better for SEO. 1 big site or a number of smaller sites.
Well, in terms of keywords in the domain, historically, in my experience, that has been a great benefit. However, there has been talk that this will be dialed down soon.
Is it your intention to inter-link the sites?
There doesn't seem to me to be any additional benefit of spreading the reviews across multiple domains. At least not based on the example as given.

RE: NYT article on JC Penny's black hat campaign
I figured that when this hit the mainstream, our clients would want to be sure we weren't doing anything below board. Interestingly, in many instances, it had the opposite result. They wanted to know how JC Penny was having so much success...

What research needs to be done prior to purchasing an old domain?
I'm planning on purchasing an old domain. I'd like to get an idea whether or not any "shadyness" was going on with the domain over the years. It's still indexed in google. I "whois'd" it, ran it through open site explorer, and did a "link:" search.
Anything else you would recommend for researching this domain?

RE: Starting a new product, should we use new domain or subdomain
2009, but still very good: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/understanding-root-domains-subdomains-vs-subfolders-microsites
Without knowing that much about what you're planning, I would suggest new domain or sub-directory.
Will this new product be newly branded or a product of the old brand. In other words, is it more like coke zero to coke or more like chrysler to dodge?

RE: Where did the link building section go?
Not sure if this is to what you are referring: http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo/growing-popularity-and-links

RE: Finding freshest backlinks
What are you using to track links? Many back link checking tools offer the ability to see new links added over a time period.
Even if you have a simple excel file of the back links your competitor had on day x, you can run a new check on day y and filter out the ones that previously existed.
Hope this helps.

RE: Would an SEOmoz Q & A feed be useful?
Thanks Trax, admittedly I didn't see that, but I was hoping to get a more "master subscribe" that would update when new questions were posted.
Thanks again.
-
RE: The Value Of A Link
Really both. On the one hand, the value of building many links on the same domain diminishes as the number of links on that domain increases. However, in my experience, this doesn't start happening until you're talking a lot of links (think footer links & blog roll links).
Going after the new domain will increase the domain diversity of your back link profile, which is really important.
Also, are we assuming that both domains are of equal authority?
My advice would be to continue spending time building links on domain #1 and start investing time into the more difficult domain #2.
-
Would an SEOmoz Q & A feed be useful?
I don't see a Q & A feed subscribe button. Am I missing it? Seems to me that being able to receive updates when new questions are posted would be useful.

RE: What's Your SEOmoz Favorite?
Interesting, combining tools into one UI would be convenient.
-
RE: Learning link building
Completely seriously, spend time exploring SEOmoz.org. Almost everything you can / should know about link building is available somewhere on the site.
I spend a lot time following people/sites on link building and IMHO there really isn't a clearly better resource.
-
What's Your SEOmoz Favorite?
Obviously, SEOmoz is full of awesomeness. But I'm curious as to what sections, tools, etc. of SEOmoz are the users' favorites?
For me, it's a close race between the blog, Linkscape/Open Site Explorer, and the search overlay tool on the Mozbar.
What are your favorites?
-
RE: What's your best link, and where is it from?
Best in terms of seo-value, traffic generation, something else?
-
RE: Link building tools/sites
Hi Laura,
First, I would recommend that if you're syndicating/distributing your content, you should find ways to avoid posting duplicate content in multiple places (or at least use the canonical link attribute).
There are several ways to auto-post depending upon your implementation. The easiest way, IMHO, is with RSS. However, if you choose to distribute with RSS, you should implement something that alters your content to keep it unique.
The truth is that the most effective way to distribute / syndicate your content is by hand. However, there are several Wordpress plugins (if you use wordpress) and software applications (like SubmitEaze) that can help you automate the article submission process.
Again, my advice is to modify your content and syndicate/distribute/market by hand.

RE: Image files names - should each be different ?
"should I name these file differently according to their content ?"

changing-tyre-tips alt="Tips on changing tyres"

RE: Why is a low ranking site outperforming a higher one?
Perhaps I am misunderstanding your query. Based on a very cursory review, http://www.kennethlewis.com/ isn't optimized for any georgia or carrollton terms. On the other hand, http://www.breemawellness.com/ contains several optimizations for those terms (i.e. title tag, internal links, etc).
Like I said, perhaps I am misunderstanding at what you're driving...
