Hi guys, our ftp got hacked a few days ago and the person uploaded a bunch of html pages with links to fake rolex websites. They also build a ton of links to the urls they had created in the image folder on our site with very spammy keyword anchor texts all in line of the same fake watches.
What do you recommend as a plan of action? Make a list of all the backlinks and upload them in the Google disavow tool? Obviously i have already deleted the pages they were linking to and secured our ftp.

I'm not to worried about the timing of the penalty just rather curious about their strategy and even after all Google's attempts to stamp out this style of SEO it looks like many are still practising it. I think it's interesting to see that sometimes these methods can still deliver results although they are probably juggling a ticking time bomb
I realise the links might be disavowed but they are very fresh so it looks like recent work. I also think the SEO company put their own details on the first link i supplied... maybe their client doesn't even know this is going on

What are the chances of these websites al being run by the same seo company ?
Some of the articles are so bad i can't believe this stuff is still getting results!
It also looks like majority of the articles are pretty recent or do they just keep changing the dates?
And is there a way to make Google catch on to these sites sooner?
One of our competitors (who are ranking top spot ) have this trend of building backlinks from websites build for the sole purpose of seo. (see example) When you see the website it's just a submission of articles from different companies trying to rank for a certain keyword most of the time poorly written.
Our competitor seems to be doing this a lot...
What do you guys think, is it just a matter of time before Google cracks down on them or is this technique actually working for them? (even though it's rather grey hat) Or... could it be someone trying to build "poor" backlinks to them in an attempt to push them of the Google throne

Yes site a was a victim of Penguin last december but has been cleaned up since. But i will de double checking before we 301 everything
Hi guys, thanks for your feedback. Site A is very similar to B as it sells the same products (same company). B is the brand name of the company so it's only logical to use that. Site B has a pretty clean linking profile with only few links at the moment. The link i pointed from site A pushed one of our main keywords to 4th place in page one hence i'm slightly reluctant to 301 everything right away But i guess this wouldn't undo our results if done correctly. I'm also thinking some of the movement in ranking might have to do with hummingbird which might be finally taking down our competitors that where lucky enough to escape penguin.
Also Chris, can you explain what you mean by "a bit of a hit on authority" do you mean a positive hit or do you recon it will go down first and then back up?
How bizarre... have you tried using OSE or AHREFS to see if that displays any PA & DA? Have you tried using PR checker? http://www.prchecker.info/check_page_rank.php
Strange... have you tried using a different computer? Clearing browser cache, cookies etc. (not sure if that has anything to do with it)
Maybe your cms is displaying content as a meta description? Can you show a link?

Hi guys i'd like to get your opinion on this.
We currently have two sites, site A is the old one with PA44 and DA33. Site B is the new one which is going to replace site A it currently has PA37 and DA24
Our plan for the future is to shut down site A and redirect all pages using 301 to the relevant pages on side B. Currently we have some links in place for a couple of keywords on site A to site B which seems to be working great for our ranking.
Now i'm wondering if this is maybe a good option, to give back links from A to B or will i pass through more link juice when redirecting everything?
(ps. both are e commerce sites hosted and registred with different companies)
Hi Gary, i had a look at your site seems fine to me.
When i checked http://www.yourcityoffice.com/serviced-office-united-kingdom.php i get a PA27 and DA46
I get 55 and 46 on your home page.
Maybe try reinstalling the tool bar? I find the one in Firefox works best, Chrome is slow to load at time.

Hi Robert, the website was hosted there. We only had/have access to the domain itself of which the name servers have been changed to connect the new site.
I think getting access to the old site on the Italian host is going to be the hardest part (they don't like us accessing it for some reason)
Is there a way i can find every url that needs to be redirected so i can send this link to them in order to get the redirections we need?

Thanks for your response Robert. Unfortunately the old site was hosted and managed by Segafredo Italy. We never had access to it. I think i will pull out my best Italian and call them. Starting from scratch would not be ideal...

Hi guys, we relaunched our website www.segafredo.com.au a few weeks ago, however google is still showing site links from our old page that no longer exist...
Is there anything we can do about this? Sit back and wait or try demoting the old urls in webmaster tools?

Hi guys i would like to hear what your tips are on keeping the "professional" competition enterers from flooding your facebook competitions and how you attract quality entries.
I've noticed by looking at entry profiles on Facebook roughly 90% of entries i'm receiving are the "stay-at-home-mom-self-proclaimed-professional-competition-enterer" that do nothing other than enter competitions all day...every day.
Are they still of any value in your opinion? (other than driving traffic to your site etc)

Hi Carlo, PDF's get indexed as well. Unless you outline the text in your design that is. Sites like Slide Share can be useful for submitting them if you intend for people discover to share your content. Make sure to optimise your PDF with urls to gain some traffic to your site.
I don't know if urls in PDF's count as a backlink? Maybe someone else can shed some light on that.

Hi guys, it looks like our developers have figured it out...
I don't know how it happened but for some reason it was doing it on this url: http://www.segafredo.com.au/Disclaimer/ Our site is run on Umbraco (ASP) but the shopping part is a custom plugin for SAP which doesn't play nice with friendly urls.
Somehow they solved that issue but created an other one... duplicate content :S

Even though search engines don't see the the "for" (correct me if I'm wrong) keep in mind you're ultimate target is humans. So being grammatically correct might affect how they perceive you.

As one of the "easy fix" suggestions it says: "Avoid Multiple Page Title Elements"
"Explanation: Web pages are meant to have a single title, and for both accessibility and search engine optimization reasons, we strongly recommend following this practice.Recommendation: Remove all but a single page title element."
By single element does it mean 1 single word?
Is that realistic?
I'm interested to see what you will do in regards to redirecting the visitors to the new address. We're going trough a similar process at the moment where we are replacing the current site which was hit with panda and penguin updates to a new branded domain although with a new design and new content. Would placing a message asking visitors to visit your new address with a no-follow link do the trick?
So basically the search engine won't see the relevance between .../coffee/beans/... but rather .../coffee/coffee-beans/...
If i understand it right from the video? Or i shouldn't worry about it to much as long as it makes sense to users?
Hi guys i just wanted your expert opinion on keywords in urls. The example i'm giving you is in regards to a ecommerce website:
Option 1: www.example.com/shop/coffee/coffee-beans/brand-coffee-beans-500gr
Option 2: www.example.com/shop/coffee/beans/brand-coffee-beans-500gr
We sell coffee so i'll keep the example relevant
Does it make a difference on how the keywords are stacked throughout?
Would the search engine combine the two keywords eg. .../coffee/beans/... or would i be better of having .../coffee/coffee-beans/... and is there a penalty for having the same phrase more than once in the url?
I hope my question makes sense...
