I'm happy to report it is possible to trigger a virtual pageview and an event off of the same click.  We've got 2 separate tags (in GTM) assigned to the same button.  We saw the activity in Real Time reports and today we see it in the standard reporting module.  Thanks for the lead, Kristen!

Thanks Kristen.  That looks promising.  I'll post my results when I have some.

If we can only choose one, we'll likely go with the Event, but I'm hoping we'll be able to do both and gather more data about when certain pages (even if they are virtual) are viewed in the path to conversion.

In a comparison of Twitter accounts, FollowerWonk shows something called Engagement % Rate.  I've looked but I cannot find any information about how this score is calculated or what it is based on.  Does anyone know?

Thanks for the suggestion, Cyle. It turns out it is the same URL from one week to the next.  I still have my ranking (phew!) but those 2 elements of the report are at odds with Google, and with each other.  If SEOmoz is reporting "no results in top 50" shouldn't they also be reporting "1 down" if last week the same URL was ranked #2?

I just received my weekly ranking report.  2 Up, 0 down, 8 the same this week.  However, last week my page was #2 for "innovation conference" and this week you report "not in top 50."  My first thought was penalty, but when I searched and removed personalization, we were still #2 for that search query.  So, something must be wrong with the report - either we're 1 down or "not in the top 50 is wrong."
