Wordpress & SEO Markup
Buon Giorno from 6 degrees C wetherby UK
I'm close to commissioning a designer to create a wordpress driven site but I'm anxious around the standard of the markup. Specifically I need pages to have the classic unique title tags, one H1 tag per page and contnet in p tags.
Now I know theres a wordpress plugin claiming to empower the administartor to have control but are there any icebergs ahead I need navigate to ensure my sites meets Google optimization guildlines?Any advice welcome

RE: What to do with old web pages after a re skin?
Also to add.... the old urls have stacks of repeated title tags Now if i redirect i'm guessing I'll still have to correct the repeated title tags or will webmaster tools still nag me about repeated title tags.
I have a feeling if i redirect the old urls I'll also have to undo the repeated title tags. Would be great if someone could confirm this would be the case so i can order some strong coffee for the grim task ahead!

What to do with old web pages after a re skin?
Buongiorno from foggy & wet wetherby UK
Having launched a website there is a cluster of old redundant pages which i dont want to appear in the serach engines problem is they deliver search traffic.
Would it be best to 301 redirect them? Or delete them & 404 Not found alert, I'm really not sure whats best
Any insights welcome

Spooky goings on from bots?
Buon pomeriggio.....
I have a clients whos data shows that they have very high visitor traffic between 1 AM & 5AM. Prevoisly I have been advised on this forum to search out and filter out bot traffic but i can find anything
But i just want to know where can i spot theses obscure things described here:
http://www.lunametrics.com/blog/2013/09/05/filter-bots-google-analytics/#sr=g&m=o&cp=or&ct=-tmc&st=%28opu%20qspwjefe%29&ts=1380528080 in google analytics. Ive followed stacks of tutorials and all i find out is i have Browser internet explorer behing the busiest traffic at 2AMPerhaps the time report is jinxed, but illustrated here is whats triggered the concern
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc53/zymurgy_bucket/vampire-data2-_zpsbe023697.jpgSo if anyone could give me simple what to do in analytics and be v gratefull!

How to measure form abandonment
Buon Pormeriggio from Yorkshires answer to Silicon Valley Wetherby UK
Ok on this page http://www.onesys.co.uk/ half way down guests are invited to download pdfs but via jquery application window as illustrated here -
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc53/zymurgy_bucket/form-abondonment_zps604b6c13.jpgWhat i'd like to do is measure abandonment rates as in how many users cant be arsed to fill out the application form. Whilst I have done funnels before theyve been wired into actual pages using Goal funnels in analytics but this scenario of a kind of splash jQuery page appearing has got me stumped, ive no idead how to measure frequeny of click aways (if you see what i mean).
Any ideas welcomeThanks,
David -

Is submitting your site to yahoo & Google still relevant
Good Morning from Sh@t its still raining wetherby UK...
I want to just make sure the process i go through when a new site is launched is nort overlooking some fundamentals.
Most sites we launch are not brand new, do allready have a link heritage and have been indexed by Google. With that in mid i do not submit a sites url thru the following links:
www.google.com/addurl
search.yahoo.com/info/submit.html
search.live.com/docs/submit.aspxAm i right in saying you should really only bother with this if the site a newbie ie no history no link heritage and the site is enering cyberspace for the forst time.
And i wonder if for example you launched a new site made sure the xml site map was in place and it had a few inbound links anyway it would be indexed anyway.
So is the practice of submitting your url to search engined relevant anymore?
Any insights welcome

Is Webmaster Tools Useless as a broken Link Detector?
Buongiorno from yes we still have free parking Wetherby UK!
Ok when it comes to detecting broken links I'm getting really frustrated with webmaster tools. Now I'm probably going to end up with egg on my face with this one but here is an example of webmaster tools reporting a broken link which i cant find.http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc53/zymurgy_bucket/phantom-broken-links_zpsb74e1246.jpg
Having trawled through the code i just cant see the knackered link? Is it a phantom report or is something usefull being detected here?

How can you manually diagnose the canonical problem
Good Monrning from snow dusted minus 3 degrees C Wetherby UK...
Is there a quick way to diagnose wether or not a website has a canonical problem or not?
So far Ive been doing this for example: Typing a full web address then one without the w's and seeing if a 301 redirect has been set up. But I'm not confident this is the best way to diagnose if there is a canonical problem with a site.
I would like to ad that I want to see if a canonical problem exists with any site and webmanster tools is not available.
Any insights welcome

RE: Why have my rankings suddenly plummeted?
HI Hg,
I too have experienced this type of behaviour. If i was in your shoes I'd leave it for at least a week if the rankings show no signs of recovery heres what i's do next:
1. Go into your webmaster tools and isolate and resolve any crawl issues i.e Broken links, duplicate content etc.
2. Make sure youve got an upp to date xml sute map in place
3. Make sure your site has a user site map in place
4. Make sure your inbound link building strategy isnyt just targeting "commercial terms" eg "glee fansite" the Google Algorithm Penguin update is onto this
5. Make sure your ranking score is accurate e.g measure it through a paid for package eg Web CEOI too am in a similar boat and if you have been hit by the penguin update I'm trying to figure out what the hell I'm supposed to do about it apart from the nuclear option of changing hosts and starting all over again

Best top 5 actionable insights from Google Analytics
Buongiorno from 14 degrees C cloudy wetherby UK
With a whole gamut of books out there are written around the topic of "Actionable Web analytics" where you have to wade through chapters of how to suck eggs and how to get analytics part of your business culture (whatever! most clients who look after their websites are entry level Marketing Execs who pay the digital agencies to do the thinking for them) I'd like to cut to the chase and list out say a top 5 of actionable insights a client would actually give the time of day for so heres my top five, whats yours?
1. Landing page bounce - showing them the £5k landing page designed with no conversion thinking is turning off customers
2. Synching up PPC campaigns to analytics and showing them how much money they are waisting
3. Goal funnels - Showing them there 20 step shopping conversion funnel gets abandoned at step 3
4. Non brand keyword traffic (although a stack of this gets blocked by "not provided" Big groan...)
5. Event tracking on there 10 page carousel anner showing them no one clicks on banners 2 - 10So under the strict label of "Actionable data only" from Google analytics whats your best insights you share with clients in the hope that they may actually give data reports the time of day!

Why do some serps have a + map symbol?
Hi from sunny but freezing wetherby UK..
Ive noticed when you enter "York solicitors" some listings have + Show map symbol. Hers is a screen shot to illustrate:

I'd like to know please what i would have to do to emulate this.
Thanks in advance,

Why you should never use Google Adwords To Conduct Key Word Research
Buongiorno from 22 degrees C too damn humid Wetherby UK,
The other day a client wanted to know how much a ppc campaign would cost with a specific bank of keywords. So off i went and loaded in the key words and set the ads thinking it was not live....
A week later i get a tap on the shoulder asking why weve been invoiced for £xxxx oh dio mio!! The damn campaign went to live. So ive got two questions:
1. Do Google adwords automatically go to Live once youve loaded up phrases and ads, i really thought it would have made it more obvious, A " Would you like your campaign to go live" prompt would have been appreciated.
2. As a safety measure is configuring a Google Alert in Analytics to ping when paid traffic is picked up not a bad idea just so ive got a warning sytem set up so to speak.
Grazie tanto,
David
