I come from a traditional marketing background and have been a professional copywriter for over 25 years, for leading UK advertising agencies.
What fascinates me is that the traditional skills, of type, layout, headline and marketing idea - are to a great extent lost and devalued in this medium.
Some of this has to do with client ignorance. And the fact that the web is so devalued - everyone seems to know some relative, or friend of a friend who will knock you something up for 50 bucks. And then you have so many companies out there promising first page on Google for little money or no effort.
With the marketing and media crises, the need for writers has collapsed, so since 2002 I've been getting involved in the internet. I now write, design and build websites, and do the SEO. Business is good. But I can't wait for the potential of the internet and web design to be more valued by businesses. It's not just for me, I hate to see clients ripped off by web designers who don't have the first idea about web design or marketing. It's the fact that the good companies are getting dragged down and the whole industry discredited.
