This should be a good credibility building third party source of google queries for interested parties thus no need to really link to them. Maybe you could comment on the articles if possible or encourage the lawyer to write articles in publications and link them as a contributor using Google + to both their website and the article in various publications.

RE: Would you consider this keyword spam?
I worked with a similar company operating in the UK and Australia for a while, they didn't implement my advice and traffic plunged. I think the biggest issue you face is it's the same content on these pages (excerpts of profiles) as is on the individual lawyers page. Each page contributes no unique value to the consumer (searcher). There may be a whole host of canonical and sitemap challenges you are also facing.

RE: Rankings dropped - lost 3,000 backlinks (but from same domain)
The second one most likely, but it could be only partly or unrelated to either. It's hard to give feedback without knowing the business or more details.

RE: How do you decide which keywords to optimize first?
That's an SEO companies IP I think if you're looking at level of competition, ppc $ and monthly traffic estimates that can be a good start but you are also part SEO part business consultant so you need to factor in the clients margins and other factors as well if you want to do your job properly in my opinion.
With existing websites there is always this sunk costs bias which I tend to see creeping in as well which affects people's decision making process.

RE: Ranking well with Google but not in Top 50 with Bing and Yahoo?
Not sure how much this still applies but a worthy starting point:

Then of course sign up as a Bing Webmaster and see what data you can gather.

RE: What is the weight of .pro domains? Will they rank?
IMO these are essentially novelty domains, maybe good for billboards or traditional advertising mediums but not for SEO, .co seems to be the only one getting a little traction.
I purchased Brisbane.pro (the name of my city) a few years back as an investment as I thought our company Brisbane Consulting might use it for recruitment or as a collaboration and information share tool. So far it's not been utilised.

RE: Buying Expired Domains
This depends on the domain and the aftermarket process, can be hit and miss, the question should always be is this investment going to get me a return on my time and money. I often ask if I am doing this why is nobody else after this domain and if there is not keyword, cpc and other data to justify a purchase I'll back away. Keyword related expiring domains would be a better bet than just expiring domains with links.

RE: How oftern should I use press relese
It would depend on whom you are using, usually a good agency is at least a few thousand per release based on my experience. It depends on either how beneficial their contacts are for your business or how wide their distribution. To get consistent coverage in quality publications you would need new angles and interesting pieces to keep journalists wanting content from you otherwise you'll only be getting links from the PR submission tools which may not be worth the investment of your time and money.

RE: What are the guidelines for writing good content ?
For example you have a blog on XYZ, next time you find yourself searching google and have to spend a long time to consolidate useful information on a topic related to XYZ to get the answer you are looking for and you can see through Yahoo! Answers, forums etc people are also looking for that information, that can be a good topic to consolidate information on. Are Google is essentially a query response engine anything "How to XYZ", A guide to XYZ" etc. You need to think about what people really want to know about the topic, customer surveys can be a great starting point. SEOMoz does a great job at this, try and apply some of the ideas Rand & Co use to your industry. Once you have written your article run it through the On-Page Report Card in SEOMoz.

RE: Tags on blog post
It's pretty easy to do in the all in one seo plugin. However the Yoast plugin is more comprehensive, if you cannot figure out how to do it you could install the all in one seo plugin then import your settings from than into the Yoast Wordpress SEO plugin.

RE: Is the ip address important for SEO?
Maria .eu is for the European Union, usually the minimum requirement for .ca, com.au, .eu, .de etc is to have a registered organisation in that country as far as I'm aware, this is the case for a number of other ccTLD's. This is why trademarks can be important as you may not be financially in a position for it to be worth you investing in a company yet in Canada for example thus you wouldn't be able to register the domain there. Thus someone else in Canada could register it when they see your site is successful and then charge you a premium for the domain later. This is where WIPO comes in handy.
As for the original point, IP addresses do seem to make a big difference when I look at how things rank across our platform which is in the US, Singapore and Australia. Having local IP's seems to confer a noticeable benefit within the US or Europe but less so in Australia as many people host in the US. There are a lot of ways to get around this such as proxy servers and a few tools out there for this like Cloudflare (of the top of my head) however this is likely only useful if you have a lot of traffic. In my opinion it's better to invest in decent servers than location based servers when you are starting i.e. prioritize RAM and CPU speed.

RE: What makes a highly competitive keyword anyway?
I'm not exactly sure how you are defining "Highly Competitive", I think you are missing something critical here, if a keyword is truly competitive i.e. "cheap flights", "credit cards", "domain registration" or "business opportunities" then this would not be the case.
Typically I would look at these things in the following order:
- Look at how many people are searching for the keyword each month using a variety of tools (HitWise, Google Keyword Tool, SEMRush, Wordtracker etc)
- Looking at the number of advertisers and the bid price on the keyword
- Look at the PR, TrustRank, MozRank etc of the top ranking sites
- Looking at the site structure of on page factors
- Looking at backlink profile
By doing these five things I usually have a fairly good idea of how to compete i.e. on page relevancy or back link profile

RE: Do I use a .org or .co.uk domain to help UK rankings?
If you website is specific to the UK only then .co.uk would be best, if you are a non-for-profit you may consider .org.uk.
