Interesting, far enough I suppose. Would certainly hold me back from making webpages a lot less visually appealing.

RE: Hiding content until user scrolls - Will Google penalize me?
Thanks Kane,
Yes, this is a visual feature to appear as the user scrolls.
Would love to hear if there is a better way.

RE: Hiding content until user scrolls - Will Google penalize me?
True, but won't tell me easily if it's given less weighting.

RE: Hiding content until user scrolls - Will Google penalize me?
Is Google really that cleaver to look into my scripts folder and see that the content is actually shown on scroll, probably not, so I'm guessing as you've both suggested it may not be worth it.
I wonder if there's a better way of doing this other than using opacity.

Hiding content until user scrolls - Will Google penalize me?
I've used: "opacity:0;" to hide sections of my content, which are triggered to show (using Javascript) once the user scrolls over these sections.
I remember reading a while back that Google essentially ignores content which is hidden from your page (it mentioned they don't index it, so it's close to impossible to rank for it).
Is this still the case?
Thanks,

RE: Concerned over a small video snippet autoplaying on my homepage (Negative page load speed = Negative SEO)
Thanks Joh,
Will look to reduce the length of the video, it's not really there to boost conversion rates but rather appeal to the target market (I.E. Align our brand with the viewer).
Great idea on autoplaying videos below the fold only when needed.

Concerned over a small video snippet autoplaying on my homepage (Negative page load speed = Negative SEO)
I'm looking at embedding a short 20 second autoplay video to show as the background in a Jumbotron (I'm using Bootstrap) right below my navbar.
This looks great and works well for branding ect, however I'm concerned the loading speed will be hit after crossing over from a static image (perhaps 300kb) to a video (perhaps 2MB) which could detrimentally hit my SEO (I also can't help but notice not many SEO minded websites have these autoplaying videos - Perhaps for this reason!)
Does anyone have any experience with a similar issue? Is there anything I can do to compress the video right now to a similar file size to an image?
I've set it up using a media query to not show on mobile/tablets.

We're planning a major website redevelopment - SEO Considerations?
We're currently planning a website rehaul, with a new site to be designed and implemented on our existing Drupal 7 platform.
I've outlined the following areas to consider:
- Listing out top content by traffic, conversions, ranking and bounce rates to ensure top content continues to get relevant links throughout site (in particular high internal PA links!).
- Maintaining a specific KW target for each page
- Ensuring on-page SEO guidelines remain (i.e. img alt tags, headings and page titles)
- Having a low page load speed
- Ensuring architecture of site is built around our keyword methodology
What else I need to be aware of?
I'm predicting a drop in traffic as this tends to follow redesigns but looking to make this as minimal as possible.

RE: A campaign ghost keeps returning to my Google Analytics - Help!
Thanks Kristina,
I set-up the filter in the following way:
Filter type - Custom
Search and Replace
Filter field - Campaign nameSearch string - 'nameofmycampaignimremoving'
Replace string -
I figured by adding in the campaign name but not replacing it with anything, Google Analytics should now pick this traffic up as direct.
The campaign is no longer showing in my traffic, so I assumed it's worked.
Is there a better way of doing this?

RE: A campaign ghost keeps returning to my Google Analytics - Help!
Very interesting Kristina.
I think I've figured out what's going on.
Our product is a browser based CRM hosted on a secure server, so I believe someone has previously visited our site and clicked on one of the old campaigns and then is either returning directly to our /login page or is clicking on the ? buttons within our browser-based CRM which leads to our website support articles and since our browser-based CRM is on a secure server this would count as direct traffic not referral.
So as you mentioned I will set-up a filter to have these campaigns show up as direct.
Hallelujah!

RE: A campaign ghost keeps returning to my Google Analytics - Help!
Thanks, bounce rate is in the early 90% so high but not 100%, exit pages also differ.
Interesting note on the tracking code.
Since if any visitor revisits (whom orginally clicked on one of the campaign links) counts as a session against the old campaign I don't think it's as complicated as people visiting through bookmarks or browser history.
Is there really nothing I can do about these old campaigns coming back ot haunt me!?

A campaign ghost keeps returning to my Google Analytics - Help!
A couple of campaign tracking links were created on my homepage (leading to internal pages), these were removed a few weeks ago (100% removed from the site).
I understand there is a 6 month window and as long as a user returns (no matter from which source) they will be counted as a session against that campaign.
Since these campaign links were set-up in error, I hoped creating a fresh new view within Google Analytics would stop them appearing.
However they are still showing as sessions even in the new view (created after removing the campaign links in question).
Is there anyway to stop this happening!? I want to be able to report on sessions correctly.
Thanks,
Sam

RE: Removing blog posts with little/thin content
It's difficult to talk in terms of truevalue. Someone of them may provide some value, but they pale in comparison to the new blog posts we have lined up and in my opinion bring the blog down; personally I wouldn't be sad to see them go.
I think it's time to exterminate.

RE: Removing blog posts with little/thin content
Thanks all, from my analysis:
In the last twelve months:
376 pages (although I'd estimate 70 of these aren't pages)
104 pages have bounce rate of 100%
307 pages have less than 20 unique views (for the previous 12 months) but the total count for this would be 1,374
which is a sizable sum.So the question is, is it worth pulling all the pages below 20 unique views and all the 100% bounce rate pages from the site? Will it actually benefit our SEO or am I just making work for myself?
I'd love to hear from people who've actually seen positive SEO movements after removing thin pages.

Removing blog posts with little/thin content
We've got quite a lot (I'd say 75%) of our blog posts which I'd consider as low quality. Short content (500 words or less) with few shares, no backlinks & comments; most of which gets 0-2 unique views a day (however combined this adds up).
Will removing these pages provide an SEO benefit greater than the reduction in traffic from the removal of these pages?
I've heard the likes of Neil Patel/Brian Dean suggest so, however I'm scared it will provide the opposite as less content is indexed and I'll actually see traffic fall.

RE: Our site is on a secure server (https) will a link to http:// be of less value?
I've taken a look into the issue and it seems there is no duplication issues in Moz, so I'm going to consider all okay.

Thanks will look at getting this sorted.

RE: Our site is on a secure server (https) will a link to http:// be of less value?
Thanks,
However Moz doesn't show any duplicate content issues with my site for this reason? So I assume we don't have an issue here.
So do you still consider http link to be an issue? I'm sure the links are benefiting us.

Thanks,
What's your references/source backing up that we should only have https rather than http and https?
Would love to read more.

Our site is on a secure server (https) will a link to http:// be of less value?
Our site is hosted on a secure network (I.E. Our web address is - https://www.workbooks.com).
Will a backlink pointing to: http://www.workbooks.com provide less value than a link pointing to: https://www.workbooks.com ?
Many thanks,

RE: SEO agency makes "hard to believe" claims
It's still as easy as it ever was to build spammy links. But it's just not what you should be doing to build a long-term high traffic site.
-
RE: SEO agency makes "hard to believe" claims
In all likelihood they're telling the truth.
Shock? Perhaps, but here's another truth in the following 12 months you'll get slapped so hard your site will be in a worse position than today!
Sam
P.S. Talking from experience as I once used one of these agencies!

New Domain VS New Page Backlink?
Assuming you've already got a link from:
sitea.com/page1 (Moz domain rank 55, Moz page rank 30)You have two choices for another link:
1. Another link on the same domain but a new page:
sitea.com/page2 (Moz domain rank 55, Moz page rank 30)2. A link on a new domain but with a lesser domain & page rank
siteb.com/page1 (Moz domain rank 30, Moz page rank 20)Assuming you have no other links to your site - both sites are relevant to your industry, both 5 years old, both have the same number of visitors/external links/ads and the content and anchor text remains the same.
Which will have a bigger impact on SERP movements?

RE: View when a link was first discovered in Moz?
Brilliant thanks! Checked all these out.
To confirm the best way is to view when any link was found I suggest Google Webmaster Tools:
Log into Google Webmaster Tools go to Search Traffic - Links to your site - Who Links the Most - More - Click "Download Latest Links". On this export you can see the link and date found by Google! Despite it's name it dates back (for us) up to 7 years.
If you want to watch links as they come in then I suggest the Moz Fresh link Explorer (only goes back 60 days I believe).
Thanks and enjoy!

RE: Why isn't www.devonshiredentalcare.co.uk ranking?
The URL and page title ect seems to point towards Devonshire a county literally at the opposite end of the United Kingdom - Could this be having an impact?
Your Moz rank is fairly low - Look to build this with high quality links within your industry.

RE: Is this cloaking or some dangerous blackhat SEO tactic?
R.E. Original question - Nothing funny here looks like a standard Meta description.
Note: It used to be standard that Google pulled only ever the Meta description but now if they consider it more relevant they'll (Google) will pull any page content that's relevant to the search query, no matter if it appears at the top, middle or bottom of a a page - you really can't dictate this since you can't possibly predict all possible search queries which will result in visitors to your site.
I'd stick to writing strong Meta & page titles & descriptions providing high quality content and letting Google handle what it pulls! You may want to look into the Schema.org markup to see what you can dictate.

RE: Linking Moz with Excel to compare links enmass
Will this only work on a link by link basis?
To confirm I have a list of 300 links I've scraped from Google into Excel, how can I display the PA for all of these sites within Excel?

RE: Linking Moz with Excel to compare links enmass
Thanks James,
That's great. What's the best way to bring in my PA into Excel?

Linking Moz with Excel to compare links enmass
Hi all,
I'm looking for a solution which will allow me to sort a list of links by pagerank.
There seems to be a couple of solutions online but neither work for me due to various updates since they were created.
Can anyone give me a solution which will work today - Perhaps using Google Sheets/Excel?
I have a Moz Pro subscription.
Thanks,
Sam
