In my experience, penalties are not passed through a 301 redirect.

Think about how open this would be to abuse?? You get a domain blacklisted then just 301 redirect it to a competitor? It would be too easy for people to completely abuse that so I can't see, just on that practical level, how passing a penalty through a 301 redirect would ever be a consideration.

Where I have dealt with websites that have been penalised and have subsequently set up new domains and 301 redirected the old ones, I've never seen a penalty passed through that redirect.

If there is to be a page for each location then there should be something useful to say about each location too.

Consider what would actually be useful to users specifically searching for the page about their area.

As well as the content about the activities you offer (which, as previous answerers have said, should be unique for each page and show you to be the 'fishing guy') I would suggest:

• Information about how to get to each location
• Local places to stay if people are to travel for the fishing activities
• Anything that makes that particular city unique/interesting in terms of the experience you offer

That type of information that is specific about each location will be unique to each landing page.

As previous answerers have also suggested, customer testimonials and other forms of user generated content would be great.

I think you'll see the benefit from this. We've redirected .coms to .co.uk domains in similar circumstances before and always seen a benefit from it.

301 redirects are the solution here. Simply redirect URLs on the old site to their new equivalent URL on the new site.

If you have some pages that were on the old site that will NOT have a new equivalent on the new site then take a view as to whether to 301 redirect or to simply let them 404. If a page has some inbound links, ranks for some keywords or generally acquires a lot of inbound traffic from search, then it's definitely worth 301-ing. If there's no equivalent page on the new site, perhaps 301 to the homepage or most similar page that will exist.

Run a full crawl of your site before launching the new one. You can use Screaming Frog (free for up to 500 URLs) so you know exactly what's there. A site:domain.com search in Google will give you the pages Google has indexed specifically.

I've had a look at your existing target Denver page (assuming it's http://www.photojennette.com/topics/denver-wedding-photography/). It's currently set to noindex, instructing Google not to index the page.

Change that first and foremost.

Secondly, I see this is essentially a category page, which is great because the content is likely to change frequently. But I would recommend getting some static content on there in addition to this. It should be specific to Denver and actually of use to people. Maybe a list of Denver wedding venues you have previously photographed, an address of an office you have or can use in Denver etc etc, maybe a guide to some of the better known Denver wedding venues.

I'm personally a fan of the subdomain method, though many sites quite successfully use subfolders.
