Hi Samuel,
Typically the footer is one of the most accessible components of a website, but search crawlers typically crawl this section last.
Whether or not you should have a site footer really depends on your sites navigation and how accessible your most important pages are. If it is SEO friendly, then simply put links to the HTML sitemap page and the most recent blog post/news links. However if it isn't then you should add footer links to your most important pages.
You can still use Matt Cutt's guideline as a general rule of thumb, You could also use Danny Dover's analogy of the anthill in his book.
Samuel finally each page is considered as a home page in search engines, with each having equal opportunity for ranking. You shouldn't only focus only on the home page is considered more generic than other page. You could potenitally impact the number of people clicking through to your site. Hence each page should be priortised, but have equal focus.'
Regards,
Hi Marisa, PR is a great tactic as you can get great number of links, so yes you are correct. In terms of duplication, I wouldn't be too concerned. Think of these sites as news sites. Most them contain duplicate content but rank highly due to their authority and overall brand reputation. I do see that they are trying to create unique content but to create 100% unique content on topical news is impossible. In my experience it would be better to target a few great paid PR directories with social media features (they tweeting the link of the PR which will give you exposure). Most paid pr directories have the ability to push their content in their networks. That means when they pick up the content, it will also include links to your website (if you have included this ofcourse). Publishing the same PR on multiple sites won't penalise you, however if it is a bad site Google will simply ignore it. Hope this helps, Vahe
Internal linking for this page can improve. Each page is considered as a single entity. Therefore effectively interlinking pages can improve the strength of the overall site. Do this by:
What you are doing is essentially pushing up link juice from the lower level pages to this page to improve its authority. In addition you are linking this page to the home page so that search crawlers can also find this page much quicker. Ensure you use a keyword rich anchor text.
As Matt said also build links.
Hope this helps,
Vahe
After 31 mins it will be counted just as an additional visitor not a unique visitor
SEOmoz pro tools set focuses on the technical, onsite issues i.e. keyword targeting, link analysis and social. It provides in depth data and not top level data like woorank, In Moz pro you can also connect Google Analytics.

Hi Ian,
Edward has started on the right step in terms
Ian I wouldn't say cms is too important as hosting and server details, because hosting & server is what limits your ability to migrate the website.
Check out this recent article - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/web-site-migration-guide-tips-for-seos and go to the URL mapping section to get a comprehensive step by step guide. Focus on your best pages.
Naghirniac, rather than searching pages indexed by google, it would be better to use a site crawler like Xenu or screaming frog as it will find all duplicate and 404 pages for you.
Good luck,
V
Haven't used it myself but there are definite benefit - http://googlecode.blogspot.com.au/2010/11/make-your-websites-run-faster.html
Hi Guys,
This question is specifically towards trying to make the connection between achieving clients objectives based on your SEO initiatives.
Google Universal SERP's tends to make me try to think towards devising more of an online strategy rather than a specific SEO strategy. Whilst obviously social, video, content marketing and all that is increasingly important channels. I think it makes our actions based on trends rather than what matters most for the site to be visible - gain traffic & links (but not limited to this).
Questions:
1. What framework or thought process do you use when devising a tailored SEO strategy for your clients?
2. How do you translate all onsite SEO initiatives off-site?
I know there is no one fits all answer, however I would truly like to seek the SEO experts out here.
Please use your example (not mine) as I think it will best help you answer this question.
Note: No reference to the digital marketing framework by Avinash, I am already familiar with this. I have also not made this as a discussion, as I would truly like to get feedback from successful SEO's.
Thank you for your answers in advance,
Vahe
RSS directories don't have too much impact in my experience.
Most CMS usually have pinging settings. Make sure this is active so that search engines and other websites detect the fresh content on your site sooner rather than later.
Hope this helps,
Vahe
If there is the same page with the urls domain.com/seo & domain.com/seo.htm for this is what can be considered as duplicate content. With or without (better without) there should only be one version of the URL, to not split the link juice passing through. Hope this helps, Vahe
W3C is an indicator of how well you have built your website but not for SEO as it use to be. I would suggest you focus on the sites speed, as it would typically deal with the issues you are facing with plugins and code. Hope this helps, Vahe
You can pretty much use any rank checking tool, but my preferred ones are Advanced Web Ranking and Sheerseo.
Just be careful that the tool you use for your large keyword set does not conflict with your ISP settings, make sure you use multi proxy server to prevent search engines blocking your IP.
Hope this helps,
Vahe
Hey Marissa, Try this http://www.seomoz.org/directories and this http://www.linkbuilderstoolkit.com/ . Removing all the dead and irrelevant sites I think you can get atleast 400 various sites. Should be a good start. In addition to OSE and Majestic (moreso for competitor backlinks), I would also suggest for you to: 1. Export linking domains list from your clients from their Google & Webmaster Tools Account. You would then need to filter it out. 2. Most importantly using advanced search queries and finding quality sites in search try http://tools.buzzstream.com/link-building-query-generator or citation labs ( a link scraper). Trust me it's never easy, but once you build your database, u'll be sweet. Hope this helps, Vahe
As Marcin said this plugin is the most crucial one as it will deal with the sites duplication and cannonicalisation issues. Also contains XML image and website sitemap.
You can also find other relevant extensions by searching here - http://www.magentocommerce.com/magento-connect/catalogsearch/result/?id=&s=1&pl=1&te=0&q=seo&pr=0:1180&t=0&p=1

"page rank" updates can be a cause - http://www.seroundtable.com/google-pagerank-update-14684.html
I wouldn't stress too much importance on PR.
Hope this helps,

Gary clients should also be the sole owner of their accounts. You should be included on the account as an administrator so that you implement and not manage these profiles.
It's about making sure they remain accountable for their owned assets.
Thanks,
Vahe

Here are a few examples of linkbuilding companies - http://www.seomoz.org/article/recommended#link-building
There are only quite a few high quality SEO teams who specialise in linkbuilding and these guys definently charge a premium.
Alec the best advice I can give you is to actually develop a specialist inhouse or hire an external freelancer that will take on a bulk of the work. Specifically having a specialist inhouse brings many benefits which include:
To do all this you will need to automate alot of the research related processes when finding links. Scaling linkbuilding inhouse or externally also requires a great project management software where you can effectively track each task.
Hope this helps,
Vahe
If its urgent however email the team help@seomoz.org. I'm sure they can help out.
Hey Rasmus,
The menu, widgets e.t.c all count as part of content as they are page elements, so ofcourse they would be considered.
This situation is abit tricky, however if you think you can merge them do so, maybe add slightly more content to each page; otherwise do nothing.
Just make sure and see whether both pages are ranking for the appropriate keywords.
Thanks,
Vahe
To be honest there is no "singe reliable" source of keyword tool data. I would suggest you use other tools i.e. wordtracker in conjunction with GKT and make the best possible decision.
As acitvity super said GKT uses 12 month average. If there is a fluctuation you can find out more about it by using Google Insights.
Hi Shara,
I think this would be more of a site optimisation issue rather than a drupal issue.
Anyways you should optimise your page with keywords showing up in:
Keywords tag is ignored by Google, whilst Bing use it as a spam indicator to detect any fishy activity on a site. It's a preference thing in this instance, however personally I wouldn't want my competitors to find out my target keywords for a page by looking at my meta keywords tag.

I don't see the benefit of creating multiple accounts. They won't be penalised but the likeliehood of having atleast one of them appear in search, when searching your brand will dramatically reduce.
Think about consolidating your efforts.
Can you clarify where you saw this?
I think what would be a good start is by first checking your clients site. This would also probably be the most cost efficient method in finding out, however take longer. You could potentially check (depending on availability):
Otherwise you would probably have to approach research analyst or competitive intelligence companies i.e. Hitwise or Citi Investment Research and Analysis. Read a post on SEL today here's the link -http://searchengineland.com/google-still-1-traffic-source-for-most-of-top-30-websites-report-110410
If they can get this type of data, I don't see why they cannot get other types of consumer behaviour data.
Hope this helps,
Vahe
Waqid if you are doing this on behalf of the florist approach them first via email, wait for a couple of days and if they have not replied back to you then give them a call. In the email cc the florist to mention that you are contacting them on their behalf.
The thing is if you first give them a call, they will more than likely be defensive and refuse your request. However if you take the approach of genuinely trying to help the florist, then reporters will more than likely respond to you. Reporters are busy people, so make your email credible and to the point.
Hope this helps,
Vahe
Google wouldn't waste budget. It just means they will have to consider crawling more internal links for a page.
Google is starting to see subdomains as internal pages to the root domain. Hence the value of subdomains have greatly diminished. More info here - http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com.au/2011/08/reorganizing-internal-vs-external.html
So if you are looking to target multiple keywords, it would be best to create a sound site structure that includes optimised content and URLs for your targeted keywords. When developing your internal linking structure, make sure these pages also link to both the home page and category page.
Hi Alec,
Answers to your questions:
Heading Tags
The above mentioned is not fine. To get more information about the logo, search engines rely on the alt tag. This has far less value that using a text based H1 tag. If you also think about it, the same logo is being used for every page, so you are essentially using the H1 tag per page.
So yeach page needs to have a unique H1 tag and this needs to be the first title.
Page naming convention
It might be an issues depending on the content and they type of external linking done in the past. I would probably add a secondary kw target, slightly more broad on each page so that it doesn't look keyword stuffed..
Hope this helps,
Vahe
The link operator is fairly limited. I would suggest pulling the external referring domain report for Majestic or if you are an SEOmoz pro member, use OSE's in combination with GWT external link reports to pull the list of sites.
However to be honest you will not be able to get all of these results as most of them might be removed or so low value that it wouldn't get picked up by these tools.
Hope this helps,
Vahe
If you put your date range to one day I'm pretty sure you can see the hourly breakdown more clearly
You are right about your recent comment. Buying individual CLD's is definently alot easier, however you can buy a .com to use as your global and create subfolders to geo target specific countries.
There are also other options you could do. This blog post clearly states it - http://dejanseo.com.au/one-domain-multiple-geo-targets/
Hope this helps,
Vahe
In the standard reporting tab, Under the audience tab click overview. On the line graph (on the right) there's an option called graph by. Click on the drop down and there's the hourly option.
The http://www.barrettsteel.com/" /> tag should be added on the other versions of the home page which SEO consult has mentioned.
Search engines will look at the timestaps to determine where the content has orginated. So best to start from scratch or use similar topics.
Generally without extension is better as it reduces your URL length, hence improves focus on the keywords used.
Agree with Dean on this one. Using rel prev and next is a more direct approach. A good answer for him!
help@seomoz.org or customerservice@seomoz,org They should be able to get back to you quicker
Use screaming frog.
Using the free version it will crawl up to 500 pages. For each page it will then provide the status code i.e. 302, 400 e.t.c That way you can determine if there are any page issues.
In general, Google Webmaster Tools is your best bet of showing a sites cannonical issues. Otherwise you can also try SEOMoz's pro tools ;0
Hope this helps.
You need to do abit of research to create a solid list. (1) Search for "directory website lists" on google. Probably the best but most time consuming. (2) You can also have a go at this site - http://www.linkbuilderstoolkit.com/ however there will be a few expired sites since it hasnt been updated in a while. (3) Another way is to view your clients Google Webmaster Tools account and pull the external links pointing to the site. Then use Majestics Clique Hunter to compare with other similar competitors to find new linking opportunities. Hope this helps, Vahe
http://writemaps.com/ hands down. Its a free online tool.
You can also search for "free visual sitemap generator" on Google
Thanks,
Vahe
Hi,
Will do my best to understand and your answer question appropriately.
If those pages are not are not providing any value in terms of traffic, ranking or links then there's no point of keeping them on the site. You could redirect but I would just implement a 410 status code to indicate to search engines that these pages no longer exist.
For pages which are providing value, restructure the site and place them in different directories (with 301 from old to new pages). Obviously you should build out these pages in terms of content and links in the following months.
It wouldn't be too difficult to evaluate your most important pages through Google Analytics, Webmaster Tools e.t.c
However the most difficulty for this project is prioritsation and how you present this to the client, considering there are 700 pages. Take the following steps when handling this with the client:
(1) Map out and plan how you want to structure the site.
(2) In plain english, list what you want to do with the site and the steps you will be taking to do so (for the next 3-6 months). Also be prepared for alternatives and difficult questions the client might potentially ask. In addition calculate the time, resource and how much you can do based on your allocated budget.
(3) Present this to the client in a clear and honest approach- be upfront with the situation. You should try and negotiate a common ground - Maybe he can give you a bit more budget this month but you get less next month for link building. How you bargain this depends on your payment terms which I do not know. But you should also be prepared to take some of the costs from your own pocket.
Next time I would suggest before taking on a contract to clearly identify the number of pages, site issues e.t.c so that project scope creep and this difficult situation does not occur to you again.
But to end this on a calmer note, buddy it's ok and you shouldn't allow yourself to get stressed about this, its all good and take this as a positive step towards your career. Whatever happens, just know that in future effectively planning will help you anticipate these issues beforehand and behave accordingly.
Take care and hope this helps.
Vahe
