Yep, this would work within the travel sector - The UKs No1 Destination etc etc.
I think it would only benefit the CTR, if the offering is indeed the best, or the client is happy to claim they are the best at what they do.

I was thinking more on the lines of improving CTR, as opposed to focusing blindly on a keyword stuffed title purely for the rank, like all the others in the top 5 in this niche.
Now the sites ranking, a more prominent way of attracting / making the listing stand out is required, so looking for valid options.

on a site?
I think you have a good approach to this, and so, all things being the same, a refresh of the site should not hurt.
You mention that "content, url structure, internal linking structure" will all remain the same - if this is true and you keep everything in this bracket 'as-is' then you should be fine.
The most common reason rankings are lost when implementing a new site is re-directs, or the lack a redirect strategy to be more clear.
As your site structure / url structure is going to remain in-tack, then you wont really need to consider mass redirects.
However, here is what I would do just in case:
Before Launch:
Create a report of top linked to pages using Open Site Explore
Create a report of top content from the last few months from Google Analytics
Map all the URLs from the current site, use screaming from or something
After Launch:
Submit XML sitemap to webmaster tool
Review and improve on-page content
Monitor traffic in Google analytics, view top content for the period after launch and compare to the report you created prior to launch
Monitor and fix crawl errors in webmaster tools if any
Attract new links
Submit new XML sitemap (two weeks post launch)
Keep developing great content

Personally I don't use them and have not seen any negative or positive effects of doing so.
The main reason I don't is, considering Google doesn't use them as a ranking influencer, then I just don't waste time filling them in. I don't think the time it can take warrant's the reward from any search engine that still looks at them. Plus, I don't like the fact a lazy competitor might take a look to see what my main focus is.
Your time would be better invested focusing elsewhere.
If the keywords tab is already on the site, then how many pages would you need to remove it from? How long would it take? And given the only real reason to remove would be to stop competitors seeing them - info which they can easily find anyway, is it worth the effort? I'd be inclined to say not.
So, in short - if they are NOT present don't bother adding. If they ARE present, don't waste time removing.

Yes, they work ok - best to keep an excel sheet to track who you have emailed. If you dont get a response after a couple of weeks resend. If you still dont get a response then move on.
You can pick some links up, but just make sure you don't spam web-masters and that your requests are relevant.

The root domain is strong, so I’d imagine the sub folders will get some benefit from this.
Yes, it is one page-per franchise deal so I think the approach I’ll be taking is making sure each of these pages has its own unique content (and checking for duplicate site wide), targeted towards the locations target KW/Phrases.
With a few decent links pointing to each location page, and indeed the domain, I think will both benefit.

10/3/2012 But what about webmasters? Are all these changes really beneficial to those that are trying to promote their content legitimately? Webmasters will argue that they have allotted substantial time to making their site Google friendly - only to be prompted with another algorithm update.
