Blog Commenting is huge for low to moderate competitive terms. In my experience I have many wedding photographers that rank only as a result of followed comment links.

In fact I know a group that have set up a system for announcing when they have posted something new, and the other members will go post a comment. It's a requirement to have No-Follow disabled.

The people posting get a link back to their site (it's obviously not a great link, but it's a link. It also isn't keyword targeted - too spammy for most site owners).

The site owners get lots of comments and their clients get to see that the photographer is popular and see great comments about themselves.

ETA: Sorry, I saw you were talking about No-Follow. Yes, there is some speculation that No-Follow is still passing some juice along. 
And it's also important to note that No-Follow isn't No-Index.

That means that Google can still crawl through the links that are No-Followed. The No-Follow is just to say that you don't "vote" for the site.

I'm planning to create a Tweet Archive on my WordPress install.

Ideally each tweet would be a separate entry in the database. That would mean that each one could essentially have it's own page.

I think that if each had it's own page though, it would just create a very deep site with super shallow almost non-existant content.

I am pretty sure I know the answer to this, I'm just looking for some substantiation...

Should I just keep it as a list and not have each tweet exist as a separate page?

With the Yoast SEO Plugin I no-index everything except Categories. You can see how I set mine up under section 3. Indexation.

Are you using Feedburner? Has the feed publishing service gotten out of sync? You can re-sync it under the Troubleshootize section.

You pretty much substantiated what I thought to be true for the first part.

I have heard of some workaround 301s when going from something like Blogger to a self hosted version. And I do believe that WordPress.com has a paid option to redirect all traffic if you go to a self-hosted blog.

Something I've never been a fan of is having a blog as the home page of a site. I've always thought that it's a bit like walking into someone's house through the kitchen out back.
If it's a vistors first time, it can be a little disconcerting or ackward even if they are not familiar with the writers style.

But something just dawned on me, and I'd love a second opinion on this.

For websites that focus on multiple keywords (in my most of my client's case it's usually a mix of Wedding Photography, Engagement Photography, Portrait Photography, Family Photography, etc).

A lot of these clients will include the photos in a blog post along with a snippet of text that may talk about the people they're photographing and maybe a bit about where they photographed. But they're usually optimizing for the overarching keyword (Wedding... Portrait..., etc as per above).

Now I'm wondering if having three or 5 posts on the home page, where most of them are focusing on a specific keyword like New York Wedding Photographer, is actually diluting the keyword they are trying to rank for.

My theory is that if I have them move their blog to a domain.com/blog, and solely focus on the desired keyword on the home page, that they would do substantially better in the SERPs.

Can anyone subtantiate this?

Hi Sophy, It's actually in line with what Marcus was saying. Your two pages are competing with each other. If you look at the Title Tag for the home page, there is nothing that says "eco products." But if you look at your category page, you'll see not only does the Title Tag say "Eco Products," but it's also in the URL. So you'll have to make a decision as to whether or not you'll want Eco Products to have it's own page or to have it show up on the home page. If you want it to show on the home page, you'll want that in the Title Tag, and you will need to rename that category page as well as renaming the Title Tag.

I wish I knew Matt Mullenweg so I could ask him the same question. I plan to be at the WordPress Camp here in San Diego in July, so maybe I'll ask around and try to get to the root of why there has never been an inherent "canonical setting."

Maybe they figured Google would sort out which is the canonical (which it will). But I would much rather say what path, or what keyword anchor Google has to crawl through to get to the post.

What happens when you use tags is that you create a page that is called www.your-domain.com/tag/tag-name. You also have the original blog post which is www.your-domain.com/blog-post.

They have two completely separate URLs, but they have the exact same content.

This is exacerbated when you use multiple tags because you increase the amount of chances for duplicate content to be created. And again it's even more expounded when you take into account the Categories, and Date Based Archives.

The solution is to use something like the Yoast WordPress SEO plugin and use no-index for everything that you don't want indexed. In my case I want Categories indexed, so I no-index Tags and Date Based Archives.

If you use Yoast's plugin I have put together a fairly easy article on how to initially set it up, and it is pretty helpful in understanding some of the settings. It's geared mainly for photographers running their own site, but should be just as valuable to you.

Well, if you don't want Google to see the list, then blocking the page with robots.txt is your solution.

But if it is a valuable list of resources it may be worth showing off that people use it.

In either case I'm not sure you want to use a php redirect. You could use No-Follow if you actually don't want to vouch for that site. But, I guess that all depends on what the site is.

I am a little confused by what you mean when you say "they looks better."

Do you know how sophisticated Term Extractors use of Serbian is? It may not be able to understand the complete language.

Can you try Google Adwords in Serbian? It may have a better idea of how Google will handle those phrases.

Agreed for sure. That is actually what I tell my clients.

And I myself follow the same practice. I'm very involved on Facebook, increasingly involved on Twitter, and do a little on Flickr.

But the About.me site is a very interesting one. There is very little method to interact with other members as of now, but do see a great opportunity to being on there. I was just wondering for sites like these if there was a better way to get them indexed.

Well, the search engines are a little smarter than being limited to one word keywords. You can think in terms of 'Key Phrases.'

A lot of my clients deal with key phrases like "Indianapolis Wedding Photographers." or "New York Portrait Photographers" So it's completey fine to target "Real Estate San Diego." or "Real Estate Fort Lauderdale."

I would also use something like Google AdWords to come up with additional terms that are being searched that are similar to the one you plan to use so that you can see search volumes and potentially find better terms to target.

There has been a lot of talk lately around social profiles potentially improving your brand as well as search.

What I'd like to know is the best practices for getting those social profiles crawled and indexed so they actually provide a good link to my site.

I'm also wondering what the difference between what Linkscape sees and what Google sees and when I'm looking at Open Site Explorer's rankings on one of those social profiles how can I be sure that Google sees it the same way.

I ask this because a lot of these profiles are not well internally linked to. An example is about.me, it's a potentially great link, but it's essentially an island, and even after dropping a couple Twitter links to my profile, Open Site Explorer shows and Page Authority of 1, and it's not even indexed with Google.

What I did last night was put a link to my about.me, flickr and wedding wire in my Connect menu drop down on my site to get that crawled hopefully soon.

Are there other methods of getting those crawled and indexed so it starts passing some juice?

Both Ryans are spot on. If you are not sure if it is a CSS coded menu or not, I would suggest posting the URL to your site so one of us can tell you.

In the event that a person uses a service like Blogger or a photo service like Photo Shelter, but use a CNAME to resolve example.blogspot.com or example.photoshelter.com to example.com, how does that affect Domain Authority and Page Rank in real world results, and how does it affect the user when/if they leave the service and establish their own site?

For example:

A client has a blog on Blogger called johndoephotography.blogspot.com but uses CNAME so what is shown is johndoephotography.com.

The Domain Authority is quite high since he is really on Yahoo's domain. How does that affect SERP rankings? Is it ignored, since it is merely a sub-domain, or does the parent domain actually give a benefit?

The second part:

If John Doe decides to host his own WordPress blog, what happens to that domain authority? Has he lost it all?
