Why do branded manufacturer websites have multiple pages for their products?

My favorite golf ball is the Srixon Tour Yellow ball. Srixon has a product detail page here (www.srixon.com) AND there's also a product detail page here at shop.srixon.com.
Is there any sort of SEO penalty here because there's some duplication? Does the fact the store is a separate subdomain make this more allowable?
Many branded manufacturer websites work this way but it just doesn't make sense to me to have two product pages that you have to manage content when you can have just 1 with a call to action.
I also work for a branded manufacturer and am considering rebuilding our website from the ground up with the online store and the main/marketing website blended into one to eliminate this duplication. We have this same duplicated marketing/store setup as well.
any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Hi Tim,
My point really was that with the right expertise you should be able to improve both usability and seo usefulness of the pages you have without needing to create alternative pages. Even unfriendly URL's can be dealt with by using URL rewrites.
If you have strong page authority for your product pages now, a change of structure would generally be a last consideration for me.
The MozBar is really useful for this kind of page-level analysis. If you work through the page attributes and elements it is easy to identify both tech and optimization issues that may otherwise go unnoticed.

Thank you so much for your reply. Your info about page authority was telling. Holding technical issues as a controlled variable, If I can have an "add to cart" button on a page authority of 44 instead of page authority 1 and be able to control the content for a "best case scenario" for my users, I've got to believe that is a win-win for both the user and SEO.
To your point though, I worry we will lose our strong page authority on our product pages if we switch platforms (even if I am able to keep the URLS exactly the same).

Hi Tim,
If you have the MozBar loaded, you can check the Page Elements for both pages and you will find that they exist on two completely different IP addresses. So, given that there is a significant difference in the information provided by each page (one is much more user-oriented), then duplicate content is probably not something they are particularly concerned about.
Again, if you use the MozBar and look at the SEOmoz Link Analysis for each page, you will find that one is serving as a landing page for the product with a lot of internal links and a few external links evident. As a result of the content and links, it has a Page Authority of 44, while the other has a Page Authority of just 1.
My guess would be that their store setup makes it difficult for them to add content to product pages and perhaps they are concerned by the "unfriendly" nature of the 30 odd character product ID for SEO.
I have a client site where the addition of content to product pages was an issue, but in that case our Chief programmer wrote me a script so that I could edit as I wanted. If we hadn't had that ability, then I guess another option would have been to create content rich static pages as a work around.

If my products aren't showing in rich snippets, is there still value in adding product schema?
I'm adding category pages for an online auction site and trying to determine if its worth marking up the products listed on the page. All of the individual product pages have product schema, but I have never seen them show up in rich snippets likely due to the absence of the price element and the unique nature of the items. Is there still value in adding the product schema even if the items won't show in rich snippets? Also, is it possible the product schema will help optimize for commerce related keywords such as [artist name] + for sale?

What are best page titles for sub-domain pages?
Hi Moz communtity, Let's say a website has multiple sub-domains with hundreds and thousands of pages. Generally we will be mentioning "primary keyword & "brand name" on every page of website. Can we do same on all pages of sub-domains to increase the authority of website for this primary keyword in Google? Or it gonna end up as negative impact if Google consider as duplicate content being mentioned same keyword and brand name on every page even on website and all pages of sub domains? Thanks

Multiple pages for a Profile
Hi All, We have a Biography website in which we have Celebrity News, Videos, Images etc. We have a main page which shows the biography and sides we show 5 blocks of News, Videos, Images etc and have a More option when clicked the page goes to a page where it shows 100's of news of that celeb or Videos etc This is the main page : sitename.com/celebrityname news: sitename.com/celebrityname/news Videos: sitename.com/celebrityname/videos Images: sitename.com/celebrityname/Images Now these 3 pages have no content in them and when we scan via SEMRUSH it shows as "with duplicate title tags". We have 20K such bio's so 20K * 3 such pages is 60K duplicate title tags How can we deal with such pages? Any help please. Thanks

Branding and Page Titles - Please Help
Hello, I have a question about page titles. How important is branding here? I'm not referring to the company name, but rather the terminology that's used as "branding language" for a company. For example, let's say that the it would be a good idea to target the keyword "Restaurant Coupons" based on search volume and competition. However, our branding adheres to the language "Dining Offers". Is it considered a bad idea to use "Restaurant Coupons" in the page title? Or is that considered inconsistent branding? Basically, I'm just trying to figure out the correct balance between the SEO value of words and adhering to a company's branding. Any help is appreciated! Thanks,

B2B site targeting 20,000 companies with 20,000 dedicated "target company pages" on own website.
An energy company I'm working with has decided to target 20,000 odd companies on their own b2b website, by producing a new dedicated page per target company on their website - each page including unique copy and a sales proposition (20,000 odd new pages to optimize! Yikes!). I've never come across such an approach before... what might be the SEO pitfalls (other than that's a helluva number of pages to optimize!). Any thoughts would be very welcome.

How to fix Invalid Product Page registering as Soft 404
Somehow with our site architecture Google is crawling URLS for products we no longer carry (there are no links to those pages so I am still trying to figure out how Google is finding them).Those URLS are being redirected to our invalid product page. That invalid product page is returning a 200 OK code, but according to Google it should be a 404 so we get a soft 404 error. Google is seeing all of the URLs that redirect to that page as soft 404's as well. The first solution I can think of is to create a custom 404 page that looks just like our site, says we don't have the page/product they are looking for, has a search bar, sends a 404 code, etc. Is this the right way to go? And it will probably take some time to implement so is there a quick fix we could do first?

Culling 99% of a website's pages. Will this cause irreparable damage?
I have a large travel site that has over 140,000 pages. The problem I have is that the majority of pages are filled with dupe content. When Panda came in, our rankings were obliterated, so I am trying to isolate the unique content on the site and go forward with that. The problem is, the site has been going for over 10 years, with every man and his dog copying content from it. It seems that our travel guides have been largely left untouched and are the only unique content that I can find. We have 1000 travel guides in total. My first question is, would reducing 140,000 pages to just 1,000 ruin the site's authority in any way? The site does use internal linking within these pages, so culling them will remove thousands of internal links throughout the site. Also, am I right in saying that the link juice should now move to the more important pages with unique content, if redirects are set up correctly? And finally, how would you go about redirecting all theses pages? I will be culling a huge amount of hotel pages, would you consider redirecting all of these to the generic hotels page of the site?
