Site Hosting Question
-
We are UK based web designers who have recently been asked to build a website for an Australian Charity. Normally we would host the website in the UK with our current hosting company, but as this is an Australian website with an .au domain I was wondering if it would be better to host it in Australia.
If it is better to host it in Australia, I would appreciate if someone could give me the name of a reasonably priced hosting company.
Thanks
Fraser

Personally I have no experience with Australian IP... but I have not really seen significative page load speed differences in the case of Italian sites with USA/UK IP
-
Interesting suggestion.
Will the IP proxy offer any benefit other then showing search engines an Australian IP?
What about page load speeds? I have worked with people from Australia previously and there are significant, measurable differences in page load speeds for a local hosted site vs a Euro hosted site for Australia.
-
Host in UK if it is better for you, but IP proxy to Australia for Localization.

Thanks Ryan,
That is what I thought as they are a small charity with a local audience. I never thought to ask my local hosting company so will drop them an email.
Thanks again

Hi Fraser.
The question of where to host a site really comes down to the location of your target audience.
If this charity was the Red Cross which has offices throughout the world, then you can host the site anywhere and use a Content Delivery Network (CDN) to improve page load speeds throughout the world.
If those who will benefit from and donate to the charity are mostly in Australia, then I would definitely host the site in Australia.
I can't share any personal experience for a host in Australia. I was recently in a similar position where I needed to locate hosting in another country. The steps I used to locate a host were:
-
asked my current host whom I was very happy with if they had any offices in the other country, or any recommendation.
-
check http://www.webhostingtalk.com/. They are the world's top site for web hosting discussions.
-
gather a list of all your requirements. Think of your current host and anything you like or dislike about them. Think of technical requirements for any CMS or shopping cart. Consider how critical managed hosting or fast replies to tickets are for the organization.
-
when it comes to pricing, shop around. I found the site which offered everything I wanted and had some extras such as green hosting and a 24/7 phone number for tech support. I then quoted my current pricing which including a sign-up special and the overall price was half of what the new host wanted. They price matched! This may be easier for you since this is a charity.
Good luck.

Question on Google's Site: Search
A client currently has two domains with the same content on each. When I pull up a Cached version of the site, I noticed that it has a Cache of the correct page on it. However, when I do a site: in Google, I am seeing the domain that we don't want Google indexing. Is this a problem? There is no canonical tag and I'm not sure how Google knows to cache the correct website but it does. I'm assuming they have this set in webmaster tools? Any help is much appreciated! Thanks!

Why would this site outrank a Pr2 site with higher domain authority?
I am trying to get a pr2 site to be on top 7 local spot for the keyword Van Nuys Bail bonds but have discovered a site which has barely any back links and is not even a year old on top results. Their backlinks are from lower authority domains than what we have. How could this site be beating a 7 year old pr2 website? The site I'm working on is http://bbbail.com/ The site that is ranking in 5th spot local with pr0 is http://www.vipbailbonds.org/ is it maybe because it is a .org site? Also I notice that all websites in top spots have www, could that be a factor as well?

Open Site Explorer Question
In OSE I have 3 of my top 5 pages as store.com, store.com/Default.asp, and store.com/default.asp -- I have a canonical version of at store.com/default.asp. I have inbound links coming to all three urls -- b/c OSE is listing these as seperate pages does that mean the link juice is not being consolidated? Or is this not something to worry about?

Is it better to have hosting that specializes in performance or have the host closer to you physically?
I am looking to change to a new hosting company. I am debating between taking a company that specializes in Wordpress and performance but is situated far from my users or a local company that might not be as good from a performance/speed point of view. Which do you think I should go with? My users are near Europe and the Wordpress hosting that I am considering is in the US.

Way to spider Wordpress site
I have an old Wordpress site and I want to move it to a new server and take it off Wordpress (too many hacks). I am trying to spider the site so as to get static, non-Wordpress, pages. I am having trouble doing this. When I spider the site, it changes the URLs. For instance, if the URL is www.domain.com/page/ the URL I get out of the spider is /page/index.html And those are not the URLs in the search engine indices. There are about 2000 pages on this site, so it is not feasible to set up 301 redirects. I tried using these spidering programs: WinHTTack Website Copier and PageNest Does anyone know of another method of turning a Wordpress site into a non Wordpress site?

Penalities in a brand new site, Sandbox Time or rather a problem of the site?
Hi guys, 4 weeks ago we launched a site www.adsl-test.it. We just make some article marketing and developed a lots of functionalities to test and share the result of the speed tests runned throug the site. We have been for weeks in 9th google serp page then suddendly for a day (the 29 of february) in the second page next day the website home is disappeared even to brand search like adsl-test. The actual situalion is: it looks like we are not banned (site:www.adsl-test.it is still listed) GWT doesn't show any suggestion and everything looks good for it we are quite high on bing.it and yahoo.it (4th place in the first page) for adsl test search Anybody could help us to understand? Another think that I thought is that we create a single ID for each test that we are running and these test are indexed by google Ex: <cite>www.adsl-test.it/speedtest/w08ZMPKl3R or</cite> <cite>www.adsl-test.it/speedtest/P87t7Z7cd9</cite> Actually the content of these urls are quite different (because the speed measured is different) but, being a badge the other contents in the page are pretty the same. Could be a possible reason? I mean google just think we are creating duplicate content also if they are not effectively duplicated content but just the result of a speed test?
