Changing server today, any SEO implications or advice you may have?
-
Morning,
We're moving our site to a new server today and having never done so before in an SEO capacity, are there any SEO implications, pitfalls, things to watch out for?
Advice and comments appreciated.
Thanks.

If you're changing IPs, I would be sure to lower your DNS time-to-live(TTL) to 1 hour about a day before the move. This would make your DNS rollover much faster. Not an SEO thing, per se, but something that certainly helps Googlebot.

Thanks

Sites are penalized if pages load very slowly.
There are many tools which allow you to check what hosts are hosted on a server. One example: http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/web-sites-on-web-server/

Two questions Ryan -
1. Does the speed of the server affects seo rankings ?
2. How to find if new server has a bad neighborhood?
-
Thanks, Ryan
One less thing to worry (too much) about.
-
The simple answer is, no. From a SEO perspective, you can host your site on any hardware or software and it doesn't matter.
There are tons of corner cases. Just a few examples:
-
Is your new server equal to or better then the old server? Most server changes are upgrades but if there are major speed issues with the new server, that can be an issue.
-
Is your new server a bad neighborhood? If you share hosting with "bad" sites, there can be issues.
-
Is your entire site being moved? Sometimes a single file missing such as .htaccess or robots.txt can cause major issues.
Overall, a server change in and of itself goes smoothly as long as no mistakes are made and it is an upgrade.

Too many SEO changes needed on a page. Create a new page?
I've been doing some research on a keyword with Page Optimization. I'm finding there's a lot of changes suggested. I'm wondering that because of the amount of changes required is it better to create a new page entirely from scratch that has all the suggestions implemented OR change the current page? Thanks, Chris

Competitor on same server (so 2 domains in same branche on same server, also same technique)
Hi, To holding of a client of ours, has bought the webshop from a competitor. They have moved the domain of the competitor to their own server, and also changed the technique so both sites have the same CMS and also same technique on the front-end.

HTML5: Changing 'section' content to be 'main' for better SEO relevance?
We received an HTML5 recommendation that we should change onpage text copy contained in 'section" to be listed in 'main' instead, because this is supposedly better for SEO. We're questioning the need to ask developers spend time on this purely for a perceived SEO benefit. Sure, maybe content in 'footer' may be seen as less relevant, but calling out 'section' as having less relevance than 'main'? Yes, it's true that engines evaluate where onpage content is located, but this level of granular focus seems unnecessary. That being said, more than happy to be corrected if there is actually a benefit. On a side note, 'main' isn't supported by older versions of IE and could cause browser incompatibilities (http://caniuse.com/#feat=html5semantic). Would love to hear others' feedback about this - thanks! 🙂

SEO is changing - how has your day to day changed?
I'm sure we all read on our alternatives to Google Reader that SEO is changing - "here's what we must do to be relevant in 2014". I find these articles boring and uninformative. I suspect I'm not alone. The reason I'm not their biggest fan is because I feel like I've invested 10 minutes into an article that I have no actual guidance from. Therefore, I thought I'd ask the real SEO's, you guys, what has actually changed for you? Are you now not creating content with the aim of getting links? If you run a commercial website, what are you doing different to rank your product pages - directly or indirectly? Please share with the group. I'm sure many like me are still brainstorming and creating content they think will grab people's attention and gain them links, whilst also pushing their Facebook, Twitter, Youtube profiles, etc etc. What has changed about this?

Mobile SEO vs. normal SEO?
Hi everyone, I wanted to ask you abour your opinon on mobile SEO. Do we already have two different Indices, one for mobile, one for desktop? Except a few mobile listings I don't see a difference yet. If yes, do I need to do special mobile SEO for my site or is it enough to have e.g. a responsive webdesign which detects the device and shows a different page? Are there any other extra Mobile SEO measures that should be considered? I know of the Mobile Sitemap and directories but is there anything else? Best regards
