Redirecting an Old Domain
-
One of my clients has a newish e-commerce website that was just redesigned. Part of this new marketing push is shutting down an old yahoo store.
The problem is that this old store's domain has a 10 year old link in DMoz and is there fore in about 200 other directories. Is pointing that old domain at the new website going to be enough to keep all of that link juice flowing?

Hi Mike,
A 301 Redirect must always be implemented on the server where your content originates.
Basically, it is "catching" the request for a page and saying "send this request to this other page". 301 Redirects happen at the page level, not the domain level. So as Malachi said, it is always best to redirect specific page to relevant replacement page if possible.
For you, the solution is slightly different, since your originating content is hosted within the Yahoo! Store system.
This Yahoo! document provides the information you need to implement a 301 Redirect from your store to an external domain (toward the bottom of the page). Look for the heading To add a domain redirect for a domain registered outside of Yahoo!:.
Hope that helps,
Sha

So if we change the DNS information and point oldsite.com at newsite.com - will those old links in dmoz still work? Since it is a yahoo site, can we even do 301 redirects?
or is that something we would do on our new site?

Be very consistent with your 301 redirects is my best advice. Last year we did a significant update in terms of content and otherwise to a new domain. make absolutely sure you're sending as much content to the correct locations on the new domain and you'll be fine. Avoid the trap of 301ing sub pages to the main domain url as much as possible.

According to the seomoz guide on redirection: http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/redirection, 90-99% of the link juice continues to flow to the new site upon redirection.

Htaccess redirects
Annoyingly it's time to play with this beast again. I've been given the task of doing the following. Keeping the homepage live Redirecting categories to the specific categories on the new site Catch all redirects Now i've managed to setup the specific categories and the catch all redirects, however I am unsure how to keep the homepage live (which is like this:www.domain.com/ so I can't just exclude that?) Would appreciate any help.

More than one web domain
Hi What is best when considering using more than one domain on a website, what the best policy ? it's a question I get asked a lot, usually because prior to any seo efforts the main domain name purchased is not keyword rich or an abbreviated company name etc. what impact do new domains have on SEO compared to older existing domains- is it worth changing a generic company named domain for a keyword rich domain? if having multiple domains pointing to the site is beneficial how best is it to configure? How do i inform Google? How do both domains get index when there is only one physical site? How should i monitor it, Analytic s, SEO moz? Will the domain compete against each other and effect SEO rank? Are they best used for marketing purposes on external sites, adverts driving traffic to the main site. I'm aware there are lots of questions above, any answers/ opinions , links to further info would be greatly appreciated. cheers

Should we 301 redirect our old domain to the new domain
We have a product that when started was under the domain appnowgo.com. We've since changed the name and the domain is now knackhq.com. The latter domain doesn't rank nearly as well as the former for many of the keywords we are targeting. For example... "online database builder" and "web app builder" are two of those keywords. Obviously having app in the domain is not a bad thing but it is our old name. The question is, should we 301 the appnowgo.com domain to knackhq.com? Or should we use that better rank and just link users to knackhq.com from the appnowgo.com site until we can increase our ranking for knackhq.com? We don't plan to update the content on appnowgo.com anymore and we obviously don't want to drop off rank if at all possible. Thanks! Eric

Is 301 redirecting all old URLS after a new site redesign to the root domain bad for SEO?
After a new site redesign ...would it hinder our rankings if we 301 redirected all old URLS that are returning 404 error codes to the root domain (home page) ? Would this be a good temporary solution until we are able to redirect the pages to the appropriate corresponding page? Thanks so much!

Global ecommerce domain redirecting to country specific TLD
We have a large ecommerce website xyz.com that redirects to xyz.ch. Recently the group expanded to India and they have launched a website called xyz.in. Depending upon the ip address, xyz.com redirects to xyz.in (for Indian audience) and redirects to xyz.ch elsewhere. Now xyz.in wants to rebrand themselves as xyz.com. To achieve this, we are planning a full-fledged, step-by-step, planned domain migration from xyz.in to xyz.com. We have two scenarios now. 1. xyz.com will continue to redirect to xyz.ch only in czech republic (depending upon ip) 2. xyz.com will cease to redirect to anywhere else. Can you advise us on the implications on both the scenarios? What's your best suggestion for us? It's slightly urgent. The management wants to take a quick action. But we want to be very sure about the implications from SEO point of view.

Redirect blogspot blog ?
Hi We have an ecom site selling childrens clothing. We startet up with a blogspot blog due to the lack of that option from our provider. I have a few links in to the blogspot blog and realized today that the PA is 39 - the PA of homepage of ecom site is 40. Ive lately been using the ..../blog on my ecom site. The functionality so far of it is so bad that i am considering using the blogspot blog again. How can i best utilize the strength of our blog at blogspot. Just keep posting w anchor text to relevant pages our main site? Is redirecting a possibility at all ? Dan Lærum

Wordpress 301 redirects
I use wordpress as CMS on a few sites and I noticed that word press automattically places 301s if I change a url etc. I believe it does it by having the following in the .htaccess file: BEGIN WordPress<ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">RewriteEngine OnRewriteBase /RewriteRule ^index.php$ - [L]RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-fRewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-dRewriteRule . /index.php [L]</ifmodule> END WordPress Should I use this? I feel like it limits my control over the 301s.
