Coding - where to start?
-
I've been working in digital marketing for a few years and over the past 2, I've concentrated on getting my head around (or trying to!) the world of SEO.
Everything from reading this forum, listening to webinars and re-reading the beginners guide to SEO has provided me with the confidence to put in actionable insights into my work such as on page optimisation, keyword research, link build and passing this knowledge onto co-workers
However, one area I am beginning to realise is just as important is having the ability to code for yourself.
Can anyone out there point me in the right direction of where to start, what I program I should concentrate on? and what I shuld focus my energies on?
Any help would be great
Simon

Hi
Try some of these places to start.
Lynda.com is excellent. They have some free courses available, but full access is a monthly subscription.
Sitepoint has some great stuff, including this HTML reference
O'Reily has excellent books.
Also, searching on YouTube is good, sometimes way easier to see someone walk through a screencast.
As a language, I would choose PHP/MySQL because its so common, and especially where WordPress uses PHP, that's probably the web language you'll be looking at most.
This is the official PHP site. - Although it can be a bit intense for beginners, but it is the official source.

W3Schools is a very good source to start w/ HTML/CSS/XHTML.

I would definitely get up to speed with Javascript too, a lot of sites use that, you might not need to be able to code it but being able to read it and understand it's implications would be helpful.
Also flash, whilst it is a pain, understand how this works with SEO (you can do some things around it) would be good.
But definitely get yourself on a basic HTML and CSS course!

I found this site helpful for learning the basics http://www.html.net/

Thanks Sha
Any good basic sites/forums you'd recommend?

Hi Simon,
I would suggest starting with the basics - getting a good grounding in HTML and CSS will make a huge difference when you are not restricted to getting someone else to make every change for you. You will also find it easier to work with your tech people once you know the basics.
Once you get a taste for it I suspect you'll find yourself seeking out other languages to learn.
Hope that helps,
Sha

What coding works for SEO and what coding doesn't?
Hi: I recently learned about inline styles and that Google started penalizing sites for that in October. Then I was told that Wix and Flash don't work (or work well) either for SEO as the engines won't crawl them (I think). Does anyone know of a blog that goes over everything that doesn't work so that I could recognize it when I look at someone's code. Anyone know of such a resource? Cheers, Wes

Exclude status codes in Screaming Frog
I have a very large ecommerce site I'm trying to spider using screaming frog. Problem is I keep hanging even though I have turned off the high memory safeguard under configuration. The site has approximately 190,000 pages according to the results of a Google site: command. The site architecture is almost completely flat. Limiting the search by depth is a possiblity, but it will take quite a bit of manual labor as there are literally hundreds of directories one level below the root. There are many, many duplicate pages. I've been able to exclude some of them from being crawled using the exclude configuration parameters. There are thousands of redirects. I haven't been able to exclude those from the spider b/c they don't have a distinguishing character string in their URLs. Does anyone know how to exclude files using status codes? I know that would help. If it helps, the site is kodylighting.com. Thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide.

Undo a 301 or Starting New Domain?
Hi Guys & Gals, I have a question I'd appreciate your input on. Quick History
Technical SEO | | Nobody1560986989723
When I first started in web design it was just me and a couple of clients. I had a website based on my name on the domain moxby.org.uk. The only 'SEO' work done on it was a bit of on-site work, various links based on forum and blog activity I was involved in (genuine involvement not crappy link building) and of course, building websites with a credit in the footer. When we got serious about the business we considered and finally put in place a new website, new branding and 301'd old URLs to their shiny new location on the new domain: _summitweb.net _(put in place about 12 months ago) Ranks were pretty much maintained and until recently we ranked well locally (still figuring the fallout from the last week or so's changes). The Question I would like to build a personal website, well I'm going to anyway. But as it's a personal/showcase website I need a personal URL for it and my natural choice would be my old url moxby.org.uk. However it is not that simple because summitweb.net is benefitting from redirected links and I don't want to harm our business' rankings just to reclaim a personal URL. So... is there benefit or would it be to my detriment to undo the 301 and build a website on moxby.org.uk or would it, in fact, just make more sense to buy a new domain and have a clean slate?0 -
Htaccess code to 301 redirect a folder change
Hi, I need some help to redirect all my site as there was a folder change. eg, the old structure was www.mysite.com/stuff-1/bags.html and I need it to go to the same structure without the "-1" eg: /stuff/bags.html
Technical SEO | | Paul_MC
The "bags.html" will be lots of different products, so this would be a wildcard? What would the htaccess code need to be? Thanks0 -
Google Schema Code for Organisation
I've created the Google Schema code for an organisation. Should this go in the template HTML so it would be shown on all pages or just on the home page?

Where Do I Start?
Each time google comes out with an update (panda, penguin) my site suffers heavily so I decided to take over my seo for my website after years of paying seo professionals, who basically never met my expectations. After runnin ga crawl Diagnostics I see that I have; 4,718 Duplicate Page Titles 1,902 Duplicate Page Content 3,469 Temporary Redirect I have no idea how to fix these issues. The 4,718 Duplicate Page Titles are hard to fix because i run a dating site and I have a lot of members who create profile so their page title is usually (members userame & Phone Dating) but i guess google considers this dupliacte page title but its not b/c the username should always be different. The 3,469 Temporary Redirect is b/c whenever a guess tries to go to a page on the site that requires them to login I use a 302 redirect to send them to the user registration page. Do i try to fix these issues or just move on to building links and adding content?

Should this site start again on a new domain
Hi We have not done SEO on this site they have used another company who looks like they outsourced and the links have been built by a third party all blog networks and this company have said they cannot get the links removed. Google flagged artificial links on this web site in February and in April it lost over 10000 visitors in a month and its just free falled ever since. The categories have been recreated and no redirects created due to the amount of backlinks from the blog sites to the original category pages but the site is not recovering its down to 1500 visitors a month and used to get 14000 a month. So should my customer ditch the domain and move this site to fresh domain? http://www.kids-beds-online.com Any answers would really be appreciated. thanks Tracy
