.htaccess when integrating one website into another
-
My client would like to integrate one of it's smaller websites into its main website.
I've identified around 20 pages which I'd like to 301 redirect to specific pages on the main website, and this is simple enough.
The problem I have is that I am not sure how I can then put a catch-all to redirect all other pages on the site to the homepage of the main website.
I'd originally though something like this would work:
redirect 301 / http://www.mainwebsite.com/ (catch-all)
redirect 301 /about.asp http://www.mainwebsite.com/about (specific redirect 1)
redirect 301 /latest.asp http://www.mainwebsite.com/news (specific redirect 1)
etc.Any ideas?

Just had a eureka moment with the issue as above!
All that was needed was a .htaccess on the old site like this:
Redirect 301 / http://www.newsite.com/
This attempts to pass a user/crawler to the equivalent page on the new site (which doesn't exist), so this is then handled with a .htaccess on the new site which then redirects to the new versions of those pages:
Redirect 301 /about.asp http://www.newwebsite.com/about (specific redirect 1) Redirect 301 /latest.asp http://www.newwebsite.com/news (specific redirect 1)
Simples!

You should be able to achieve what you want by redirecting 404s. You can do this by adding the following to your .htaccess
ErrorDocument 404 /homepage.html
Where homepage.html is the address of your homepage.
What would be better really though is to land them on a an actual 404 page that explains that the page doesn't exist anymore and gives them options of where to go next. Include direct links to the most popular content on the site.

Htaccess redirects
Annoyingly it's time to play with this beast again. I've been given the task of doing the following. Keeping the homepage live Redirecting categories to the specific categories on the new site Catch all redirects Now i've managed to setup the specific categories and the catch all redirects, however I am unsure how to keep the homepage live (which is like this:www.domain.com/ so I can't just exclude that?) Would appreciate any help.

Hi guys I am working on some 301 redirects on an apache webserver and I'd like a bit of assistance in trying to get a specific type result: I want all addresses from domaina.com to be redirected to domainb.com in the same structure so domaina.com/folder/file will go to domainb.com/folder/file expect for 2 folders.

SEOBook RankChecker Works at one location but not another
I use SEOBook's RankChecker to do spot checking of keywords for clients or for potential clients. I like the tool quite a bit, but I've noticed that it recently stopped working at our office (instead of rankings, I just get a series of dashes) but works fine from my home computer. I'm thinking that it may have to do with our company's firewall. Anyone have any thoughts?

Redirecting one ecommerce site to another
Hi I'm planning to redirect one large ecommerce site to another. Here's how I was thinking of doing it: crawl both sites with Xenu and export urls to a CSV match urls where possible, redirecting pages from site A to relevant ones in site B all others will be redirected to site B's home page Now, I'm dealing with thousands of URLs here, so any way to make it easier would be great. Could this mean just redirecting all of Site A's pages to Site B's homepage would be worth it? Or does redirecting relevant pages where possible seem the best idea? Thanks guys!

Two domains One hosting account
I have two separate domains set up on one hosting account through godaddy. Will this affect the SEO negatively? They are completely different sites with their own unique domains but on my local files the second domain is set up as a subfolder for the original hosted domain. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

.htaccess and www - non www
Recently I have taken over a website and I made a pretty colossal mistake. The site was properly constructed via .htaccess to a www domain. Typically I roll without it and I made a bad assumption that the .htaccess was not previously set correctly because there were hundreds of fundamental mistakes. After a couple of days I noticed the mistake but some of our new (non www) have picked up some solid links etc. So now I feel that I am in a nightmare of creating redirects etc. So should I switch back to WWW or not? Does it matter at this point?
