Page rank 2 for home page, 3 for service pages
-
Hey guys,
I have noticed with one of our new sites, the home page is showing page rank two, whereas 2 of the internal service pages are showing as 3. I have checked with both open site explorer and yahoo back links and there are by far more links to the home page. All quality and relevant directory submissions and blog comments.
The site is only 4 months old, I wonder if anyone can shed any light on the fact 2 of the lesser linked pages are showing higher PR?
Thanks

Cool - have you figured out what the problem might be yet?

Does your homepage show (in Google's index) under different URLs? E.g.
That would split the authority over the separate URLs. You should redirect any differences to one standard URL and all of your links should point to the exact same homepage URL if possible.
Is your homepage linked to on every page on your website? How about those service pages? Your internal link structure goes a long way towards showing which pages are the most important.
PageRank updates infrequently. There's a possibility the value of your internal pages has been updated, but the homepage hasn't. Have you checked the Page Authority in SEOmoz PRO?
You say you have links from "relevant directory submissions and blog comments" - as it's a new site you might not have a varied link profile, so the link building could look unnatural. A spike of links from directories, for example, doesn't look natural - so Google might not give the links as much weight as they would have done had the links been built over a longer time period.
Do you have any/more outbound links on your homepage? Are you selling links?
It could just be down to the fact that the site is new. The authority of the homepage should naturally build over time if you continue to concentrate on building a relevant link profile from varied sources.

Yeah sure, that's a good point and actually makes total sense.
When I look at the site, one of the service pages has only links from the body text of the blog and the home page yet it is PR 3. Do you think it makes sense to also produce more internal body text links from the blog and service pages to the home page? To out weigh the blog comments?
-
Yea, I have found and tested the fact that Google has essentially de-valued Comments, Footers, and Sidebars. To what extent I don't know. I wouldn't cease any natural blog commenting as it is just that, natural.
My comment was merely regarding the value (weighting) of different types of links. A blog comment link is worth much less than a link in the body or content section of the page. And because of this it could lead to your inside pages being considered more authoritative.
It's not that the homepage is being penalized or looked upon negatively, it just doesn't have the same inbound link juice.
-
you know that is weird. Although it is a method of spammers, if the site is relevant to your own, it makes no sense for Google to de-value.
The comments on the blogs are mostly no follow, but they are comments made by an employee who is networking in the industry and is not concerned if the actions affect the SEO of the site. He is simply commenting on relevant blogs that are of interest.
Do you think I should ask them to stop? I really didn't think this kind of no-follow comment link paid any negative towards PR. As long as the site is relevant, it is natural behaviour.
-
Hi! It's highly possible that the homepage is not getting full link juice value since you mention that it receives blog comment links. First, those are likely nofollow and second they have been devalued by Google since they are a known method of spammers.
If the other pages receive better quality links they will be considered more authoritative than the homepage. Just my thoughts!

Specific vs. Home Page Backlinks
So, I'm getting ready to start a campaign to get some backlinks. Pretty sure this is a silly NOOB question, but what is better: To get backlinks directed to my home page To get backlinks directed to she specific product/topic being discussed in the backlink. Thanks in advance for any help. My GUESS on the whole topic is that linking to a specific product page from a backlink with anchor text is best practice. It will boost the Page Authority of that page while boosting the overall Domain Authority . . . a win win.

How to get google to forget my old but still working page and list my new fully optimized page for a keyword?
Hi There! (i am beginner in seo) I have dynamic and static pages on our site. I created a static page for a specific keyword. Fully optimized it, (h1, alt, metas, etc.....maybe too optimized). My problem is that this page is alive for weeks, checked it in GWT and it is in robots.txt, google sees it, and indexed it. BUT whenewer i do a search for that keyword, we still appear with the dynamically created link in the google listings. How could i "redirect" google, if sy make a search for that keyword than shows our optimized page? Is there a tool for that? I cant delete the dynamic page... Any ideas? Thx Andrew

What should I do about not found pages?
I took over a site that had been hacked. A bunch of pages were created that said domain.com/cms/viagra. The pages are gone but they still show in webmaster tools as not being found, which is what I want. However, should I do anything besides leaving them as 404?

Ranking in Bing
My frustration with Google currently has led me to try bing out more. I don't rank as good in bing as Google, so I was wondering if anyone had any great tips of what bing looks for to rank website well? So far I can see they seem to favour keyword domains, take 'cheap holidays' for example. Always reading about what Google want but what do bing want? Any advice much appreciated.

Page titles in browser not matching WP page title
I have an issue with a few page titles not matching the title I have In WordPress. I have 2 pages, blog & creative gallery, that show the homepage title, which is causing duplicate title errors. This has been going on for 5 weeks, so its not an a crawl issue. Any ideas what could cause this? To clarify, I have the page title set in WP, and I checked "Disable PSP title format on this page/post:"...but this page is still showing the homepage title. Is there an additional title setting for a page in WP?

Pages not ranking - Linkbuilding Question
It has been about 3 months since we made some new pages, with new, unique copy, but alot of pages (even though they have been indexed) are not ranking in the SERPS I tested it by taking a long snippet of the unique copy form the page and searching for it on Google. Also I checked the ranking using http://arizonawebdevelopment.com/google-page-rank
Technical SEO | | Impact-201555
Which may no be accurate, I know, but would give some indication. The interesting thing was that for the unique copy snippets, sometimes a different page of our site, many times the home page, shows up in the SERP'sSo my questions are: Is there some issue / penalty / sandbox deal with the pages that are not indexed? How can we check that? Or has it just not been enough time? Could there be any duplicate copy issue going on? Shouldn't be, as they are all well written, completely unique copy. How can we check that? Flickr image details - Some of the pages display the same set of images from flickr. The details (filenames, alt info, titles) are getting pulled form flickr and can be seen on the source code. Its a pretty large block of words, which is the same on multiple pages, and uses alot of keywords. Could this be an issue considered duplication or keyword stuffing, causing this. If you think so , we will remove it right away. And then when do we do to improve re-indexing? The reason I started this was because we have a few good opportunities right now for links, and I was wondering what pages we should link to and try to build rankings for. I was thinking about pointing one to /cast-bronze-plaques, but the page is not ranking. The home page, obviously is the oldest page, and ranked the best. The cast bronze plaques page is very new. Would linking to pages that are not ranking well be a good idea? Would it help them to get indexed / ranking? Or would it be better to link to the pages that are already indexed / ranking? If you link to a page that does not seem to be indexed, will it help the domains link profile? Will the link juice still flow through the site0
