Need some help with a tricky 301
-
I can't find anything online that deals with this issue. I have a page getting indexed by Google at mydomain.com/widgets and I don't know why. No links to it anywhere. The page it is closest to is mydomain.com/reviews/widgets and so I tried to set up a 301 to point one to the other.
The problem is each individual widget review is at mydomain.com/widgets/reviews/products/widget-name and so when I redirect /widgets to mydomain.com/reviews/widgets it also redirects each individual product to mydomain.com/reviews/widgets/reviews/products/widget-name.
Is there some way to just redirect /widgets without having it affect each product review? I cannot change URL structure either, nature of the site. Any ideas?

Hi Daniel,
Whenever I hear "Nothing is redirecting when I add this to the .htaccess file" I have one thought:
Is the site using Joomla, Drupal or some other CMS that will overwrite .htaccess rules externally?

Just not happening. I'm just not going to worry about it, thanks for your help
-
Gotcha. Try adding the rewriteengine on line directly above those two rules. That has to be present to trigger the mod_rewrite module. Hopefully that will solve the issue.
-
Yeah I took the ReweriteEngine On line out and just added the RewriteRule line in underneat that one. Although it doesn't say anywhere RewriteEngine On in the .htaccess file already, so not sure how that works.
-
Well, that's no fun. If there is already a line to initiate the rewrite engine, that 2nd 'rewriteengine on' reference could be a problem. I assume you took that out?
-
It is not working for me. Nothing is redirecting when I add this to the .htaccess file. First I added it as you suggested at the bottom of everything. Nothing happened so I added right after another line of code that was already in there that started with RewriteRule. This is the line that was already there:
RewriteRule ^.*$ index.php [NC,L]
Any idea what could be going wrong? Thanks in advance!

Hi Daniel - Are you using htaccess to handle your redirects. I think you'll need to employ some Regular Expressions to handle what you're trying to accomplish. As a guide, here is a very nice writeup on RegEx from - where else - SEOmoz: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/an-seos-guide-to-regex
so, in this case, i think what you'll want is:
RewriteEngine On
**RewriteRule ^widgets/?$ reviews/widgets [NC]**so, the caret (^) ensures that the url starts with widgets, while the dollar sign ensures that the redirect rule stops there (eliminating that pesky problem you encountered with the review pages also getting redirected). The ? just means that the trailing slash is optional.Hope that helps. If this solution isn't feasible, you could always hedge with rel="canonical" on the mydomain.com/widgets page and have that point to the proper page. That will at least help with Google.-Jason

Help With Href Lang Implementation
Hi, We've received the following Href Lang errors in Google Search Console. After much research and playing around with the tags we're still no closer to fixing the issues. ERRORS; http://prntscr.com/du8ei8 AND http://prntscr.com/du8evi As you'll see, Google is telling us that some URLs do not have return tags, but they do seem to! Does anyone know of a pro that can provide a service to fix this for us? Many thanks in advance, Lee.

Help! Website Page Structure.
Hi there, I have a cupcake website; www.cupcakesdelivered.com.au To date, we have sold only regular cupcakes. Moving forward, we are about to start selling lots of different sorts of cupcakes and want to categorise them - i.e.; sport cupcakes, corporate cupcakes, movie-themed cupcakes etc. I am looking for a recommendation on how best to structure this in terms of pages / domains / subdomains etc, so as to best support SEO. Your help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you, Laura.

301 vs 302
We recently launched a redesign and I noticed from running a crawl using Screaming Frog SEO that our redirects are all being seen as 302. I know 302 is a temporary redirect, but does this hurt SEO rankings when all our redirects are being seen as 302s instead of 301s? Also, the way I implemented the redirects was by using the IIS Manager Tool. Is it possible that our IIS Manager Tool is not configured properly and instead of adding the redirect as 301, it is inserting it into the rewrite file as 302s?

Emergency Help...
Hello All, I'm trying to get a better handle on this, but any help would be hugely appreciated. Per my Pro account, i just found out that the keyword i was severely trying to rank for "Boston Wedding Phot*grapher" i just declined by over 40 positions. Just last week i was in the #3 position. Needless to say, this is extremely bad. I feel sick from it. This is my livelyhood. I recently hired a 'so-called' SEO expert to look at it, but i'm having my doubts. I'm using a php based site with a wordpress blog. He added a bunch of 301 redirects from pages that the crawler was complaining about to my .htaccess file. He also installed the following plugins: Link Juice Keeper NoFollow Free The SEO Rich Snippets Udinra All Image Sitemap WP Robots Txt WP-PageNavi Add Meta Tags These are essentially the only changes made. Does anyone see anything blaring and/or obvious? I could really really use some help. My blog link is : http://www.symbolphoto.com/blog/ I'm assuming it's the blog because that's where most of my site content is located. Any advice is hugely appreciated. TIA.

How long do 301 redirects have to stay in place?
For a large retail site we have plenty of "old" pages that are 2-3 years old and still have 301 redirects to a new page. After a search engine has recognized a 301 redirect and dropped the "Old" URL from the index and started displaying the "New" URL, is it safe to delete that old page and thus remove the 301 redirect?
