Wrong page ranking even after fixes. Why?
-
Howdy,
I've read a number of posts on this issue and followed all the advice I could find. My issue is this: several of our targeted keywords have the wrong page ranking which results in a loss of conversion and high bounce rate.
I use the site:mydomain.com operator to see how the pages are ranking which I find really useful. One of our targeted keywords is 'wedding stationery' and the page which should rank is shop.confetti.co.uk/branch/wedding-stationery however this page ranks 3rd on our domain.
I've done the following:
- Optimised the correct page
- De-optimised the ranking pages
- Added links from the incorrectly ranking page to the page I want to rank using keyword anchor text
- Added internal links to the page I want to rank from high Page Authority pages using keyword anchor text
Here is a link to the SERP which shows the ranking for our domain for the 'wedding stationery' search term.
I made the changes a couple of weeks ago.
Any advice or explanations as to what is causing this would be greatly received.
Thanks in advance,
Brendan.

Hi EGOL,
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, redirecting the subdomain to the root isn't an option due CMS limitations. We're looking at this long term.
For now I've added a link to the wedding stationery page using keyword anchor text from every page of the subdomain including the high PA pages.
Any more ideas? It seems crazy that the homepage ranks for this term given there are no optimised links to it and the keyword appears only as links to the pages we want to rank.
Thanks in advance.

"Wrong page ranking even after fixes. Why?"
Because you are fixing the wrong page.
No, seriously... don't expect a subdomain to inherit much authority or linkjuice from the root domain.
If this was my site and I wanted to fix this... I would redirect that subdomain to a folder in the root and then try to rank the page in the folder.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for your response. The link to the "Create your own stationery" is correct as this is another of our targeted keywords.
We renamed the target page and gave it a new URL (with 301 redirects) which is why is has a PR of 0. It's actual PR will be around 3.
Your point about the subdomain is a good one so thanks for that.
Are there any more suggestions out there?
Thanks again,
Brendan.

Just noticed one other thing.... Your home page was actually linking to the "create your own stationary." page rather than the page you are hoping to target
Not that you should obsess over page rank but the home page is 5, page the homepage links to is 3 and the page you are trying to target is 0.
Try and sort out your internal and you might succeed, but don't do it at the expense of your page 1 ranking!

You still have the word "Wedding Stationary" on the homepage which is probably why the homepage is still ranking.
Also the page you are trying to rank is a subdomain so is not directly linked.
I would expect that if you go overboard on trying to swap the rankings you will lose the home page and stay 3rd page for the product page - don't do this!
Instead simply continue to build links and optimise the product page and work at getting them BOTH on page 1.
Since google changed their rules I have many serps with both the homepage and the targeted page sitting next to each other on the front page. Twice the links gives twice the opportunity for clicks. And longterm aim for the 1 and 2!

Local Landing Pages struggling with rankings although I've done most things needed. Any idea?
Hi Mozzers, I am wondering if someone could advise if there's anything obvious here as to why my local landing pages suck ranking wise even though I have done all of the following. http://goo.gl/Lr4HXa I am trying to rank for Garden tool hire Bristol on my landing page. Main category page is garden tool hire Consitant NAP - Citations. Local branch address on Page , in title tag, H1 tag and the address is in on page content which is unique. Schema.org has been set up with address in this aswell etc. Pagination set up and view all page has concanical tag pointing to page 1 Speed not an issue as this is a fast site. Currently all the product links on the page are H3 tags but I've seen this on lots of other sites. All my NAP Citations point to the parent branch pages although I don't have any individual deep links pointing to this page. Unique Content I currently don't have internal links to relevant articles on my blog page as I have those on my main category landing page as you can see here - http://goo.gl/sO9A9U but I can add these as well to all my location specific landing pages if you think it would help. Any thoughts greatly appreciated Pete

Is there a way to index important pages manually or to make sure a certain page will get indexed in a short period of time??
Hi There! The problem I'm having is that certain pages are waiting already three months to be indexed. They even have several backlinks. Is it normal to have to wait more than three months before these pages get an indexation? Is there anything i can do to make sure these page will get an indexation soon? Greetings Bob

Advice on improving ecommerce product detail pages to rank better in google search results.
Hi all, I run an ecommerce website, not a great ranked site, however i want to try and improve the product detail pages. To do this, i am first going to focus on 1 page (this one: http://goo.gl/eS62SU) If i type the product code directly into google.co.uk search i am on the 8th page (see https://www.google.co.uk/#q=hac-hfw2220r-z&start=70) which is a bit poor to say the least. I see this kind of thing for a lot of my products. Hence, i am going to see if over the next month or two i can get this one page moving up the rankings purely with on page optimisation. I would like to ask a couple of things: 1. Is there anything that jumps out at you as to why that product detail page could NOT ever rank well, i.e some code / set up of page etc that prevents google ranking it 2. Any advice you could give that might improve that page in rankings for its product code. FYI - I can not change the dynamic URL, I only have control over such things as product name / summary / features / spec etc any advice welcome

Switchboard Tags - Multiple desktop pages pointing to one mobile page
I have recently started to implement switchboard tags to connect our mobile and desktop pages, and to ensure that our mobile pages show up in rankings for mobile users. Because our desktop site is much deeper in content than our mobile site, there are a number of desktop pages we would like to have point to one mobile page. However, with the switchboard tags, this poses a problem because it requires multiple rel=canonical tags to be placed on the one mobile page. I'm assuming this will either confuse the search engines, or they will choose to ignore the rel=canonical tag altogether. Any ideas on how to approach this situation other than creating an equivalent mobile version of every desktop page or implementing a user agent detection redirect?

Why do they rank the home page?
We are trying to rank for the key word Motorcycle Parts. We have moved up to page 2 over the past couple months; however, google is ranking our home page not our http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/s/49/61/Motorcycle-Parts page that is for motorcycle parts. We are working on internal linking to help point the right signals too. Any other thoughts? ( we have new content written to put in as well we just have to wait for an issue to be fixed before we can put it in)

Wrong Page Ranking
Higher-level page with more power getting pushed out by weaker page in the SERPs for an important keyword. I don't care about losing the weaker page. Should I: 404 the weaker page and wait for Google to (hopefully) replace it with the stronger page? 301 the weaker page to the stronger page? NOTE: Due to poor communication between content team and myself, the weak and strong pages have similar title tags (i.e, "lawsuits" and "litigation")
