When using AdWords keyword tool, which "Match Types" should I be using?
-
Broad, [Exact], or "Phrase"?
-
With this particular keyword phrase, I'm not surprised at the difference between the two search estimates.
If broad match targeting is selected for this phrase, ads would be eligible to show for searches containing the words find and deal, either together or separate, and possibly with other words included in the search query.
If phrase match targeting is selected, ads would be eligible to show for searches including the words 'find a deal' in that order (I don't believe the "a" is factored in), in addition to searches including other words, as long as the keyword phrase is in order within the query.
See: http://adwords.google.com/support/aw/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=6100 for more details on keyword match types.
Without doing any additional research, I would suspect that the keyword phrase "Find a Deal" when targeted with broad match would include wide ranging possible searches, e.g. "Vacation Deal", "Deal on Umbrellas", "Find Shoe Stores", etc. Obviously, the numbers from broad match targeting here are going to be higher in volume but much lower in relevancy. In contrast, analyzing "Find a Deal" with phrase match is going to be limited to searches such as "find a deal on electronics", "how to find a deal on hotels", "find a deal on Seattle hotels", etc. This limitation should result in lower impressions but greater relevancy and conversion rates.
So as far as what match type numbers are most important to you, I would say that it depends on what your business offers and how precise you have to be with your targeting in order to attract a relevant audience. If you offer every possible deal on anything under the sun, broad match becomes a bit more attractive. However, I imagine this isn't the reality of the situation, in which case you'll end up often having a mismatch between user demand and website supply, as well as lower CTR and CPA with higher cost if employing paid promotion.

For my website, Recessionitis.com, I'm targeting the keyword phrase "Find a Deal".
Using the AdWords tool, a broad match shows 49,500 local searches, while a phrase search only yields 320. That's a pretty dramatic difference.

It really depends on what you are trying to do. Can you provide a little more detail?

Optimizing a Webpage without keywords
Hi all, I’m really running into a challenge internally lately in that we have a lot of teams redesigning or building new pages (specificially one team) that do NOT loop our teams in. When we finally get them to work with us, to drive traffic to the pages, they disagree that there must be other ways of optimizing the pages than focusing on keywords with search volume that are relevant to the page. We usually land that they will choose a keyword or two they think a user will search for, we do keyword research and pick something close (because they don’t want to utilize a term that doesn’t make much sense, as they have written the content without involving us from the beginning, but then our search volume is declining). They keep saying there are other ways than changing the paired down content on their page and adding in keywords to the H1 headers, content on page. they mentioned semantic search at one point. For example, https://www.entrust.com/products/entrust-getaccess/ currently ranks around #10 for "single sign on solution." This keyword was on the previous page quite a few times in headers and body copy. Now it appears on the page 3 times after the redesign and is not in the h1. The team does for example want to optimize for this term, but there’s lots of pushback as they want a page with minimal content and little design. Just wondering your thoughts on this. IS this a common challenge you deal with too and any idea on answers as I've tried many with the teams? Thanks, Laura

Potential Keyword Cannibalisation
Hi, I am concerned that our website's rankings are currently being affected by KW cannibalisation. We don't rank too badly for our target keywords but they could, of course, be better, especially as the niche is very competitive! One thing that is bothering me is that our internal pages do not rank well for these KWs and instead it is the homepage appearing in the rankings. This is despite the fact that the internal pages are optimised for the different keywords. Basically the HP is also targeting these same keywords and I was wondering if this is affecting our rankings overall? I am not keen to risk changing the homepage in case our rankings suffer massively and we drop out of Google completely. If anyone could offer some advice then that would be great. Is it simply a case of trying to get external links pointing to these internal pages? Would internal linking to them prove effective as well? Cheers Tom

Keywords in SEO Moz versus Keywords on pages
II'm a little confused by how the SEO Moz keywords relate to our page keywords. Should all the keywords we put in SEO Moz be in our page keywords? Can our SEO Moz keywords span the kepywords of severla pages or do we need ot tighten up and only use 5 for example keywords in SEO Moz and on our pages? Thanks!
