Internal Linking
-
Hi Everyone,
Should i be careful of how many internal links I have on one page? For example if i have a page that contains 700 words, can i have 5, 10, 15 internal links linking to other pages on my website? Is there a ratio for best practice.
I know that internal linking is important for spiders to crawl your website but at the same time dont make it look spammy.
I hope this makes sense.
Thanks for any help.

Yes, just noticed this also. I'm sure the guys who work on Wiki & the likes of the BBC, The Guardian are not just using this method for the sake of it, very interesting indeed. Although noticed NYTimes user underlines
-
I am not aware of any case studies, but I would share I do not use underlines on links in content. I like the method used here at SEOmoz. Notice in Alan's reply when he shared a link it appears in blue. That is the style I prefer.
-
I agree, many sites do not underline, I personly have not seen any evidecne to cause concern.
-
I see SEO like playing golf after a lesson, you dont want to go all stiff and un-natural, you need to swing natrualy with what you have learnt in the back of your mind.
-
On another note, i notice that Wiki, BBC and other do not user underlines by default in there internal links, but use just a different colour of text, only when the user hovers over the text it underlines. Do you know of any case studies done on this? what have you guys used in the past? experiences etc
My personal feeling is lets say naturally there are quite a few links, underlines i think make it quite difficult to read.
Kind Regards

bing actualy encourges internal linking
Provide a site structure with strong functionality, which helps encourage
link building. Linking to both trusted outside sources and internal content
shows a search engine you care about users getting the best data around their
query. In addition, HTML sitemaps ensure a good user experience and help search
engines discover all your pages and content.

Hi Ryan,
Yes, all these are natural, all for the benefit is for the user, not try to think to much on the SEO side of things, well maybe a little
Thanks for your quick response.

Hello;
If the links are relevant, and have structure, and reasons for being there, and linking to relevant information, I dont think it would hurt your ranking, so yes, I would be very careful, and yea, for the most part, with out seeing your site, the way it sounds, like a "Link farm" and search engines are over looking any link farms.. Hope this helps.
That is just my opinion.

Use whatever amount of internal links comes naturally. The purpose of internal links are to allow users who desire more information the ability to quickly find it.
If I write a statement "Vitamin A, Iron and Zinc are all essential nutrients....." then the three terms "Vitamin A", "Iron" and "Zinc" can all be anchor text links to internal pages which discuss these topics in greater detail. There is no rule of thumb such as "don't use more then 5 internal links per 100 words". The number would depend upon what content your site has available.
Take a look at Wikipedia which extensively uses internal links and ranks very well.
With respect to spam, I have never found natural internal links to look spammy. It's when you stretch to using text such as "the best vitamin in the world" as anchor text repeatedly that things can appear unnatural. You can certainly use that type of linking a few times in an article but I would suggest not overdoing it.

Dynamic links & duplicate content
Hi there, I am putting a proposal together for a client whose website has been optimised to include many dynamic links and so there are many pages with duplicate content: only the page title, h1 and URL is different. My client thinks this isn't an issue. What is the current consensus on this? Many thanks in advance.

Problem with internal links.
Hello,I am trying to do an audit of the internal links of my site at zenplugs.com. I am having great difficulty simply trying to establish how many internal links there are on the home page. Off the top of my head I think there are probably 20-25 but Screaming Frog tells me there are 574, the MozBar is listing zero and Open Site Explorer is telling me my site hasn't been indexed yet. I have tried several web based services but most of them don't work. Can anyone recommend a tool which has given them a number they trust? My second query is that one of the tools told me that there are 4 links on the home page with no anchor text, linking to http://zenplugs.com/#. Is this a problem? Many thanks, in advance. Toby

Several Links in Some Pages
Dear all, Our main site is a bussiness directory, and following some SEO advices, we are creating landing pages for each category, in order to optimize them for the keywords. Those landing pages have links to the listings related to them. Using the same idea, we have created pages related to the regions, and those pages include links to the listings located in them. The only problem that I see with that, is the number of links that some categories or regions could have. Is there a limit of recomended number of links per page, from a SEO perspective? We also have a main category page, that includes a list of all categories, and this page could also have a relatively high number of links. The pages have around 300 to 500 words, some include also images, some include videos. Many thanks for your help, Daniel

Relating forum discussions to improve internal linking
Hi all, I have a matter i would like a discussion about, since I am looking for a good solution. First the case: I have a site with a large community based discussion board. We daily have 40 to 80 active forum threads with average of 200 posts. As it is right now each thread page shows, at the bottom of the thread, the 20 threads with latest activity. From a SEO point of view this is not the best solution, since all thread pages passes link juice to the latest 20 threads. However, the threads change daily so the juice is sprayed around all over the place. What I want to do is related forum threads, such that each thread at the bottom shows up to 10 threads which could be of interest to the reader. In this way one thread will have more or less the same threads at the bottom at all time, unless the relevancy is better for other threads, causing som minor changes to happen over time. The question is, how can one do this? In the backend, the forum has two tables. One holding threads and one holding posts relating to the threads. All in all the system has 66.500 threads, and in total 469.000 posts. Every thread has a title, and the posts are of varying length. The threads have categories, but they are not so distinct that a thread in one category can not be related to a thread in another category. So I would like to make the relevancy from the title of the thread and the content of the forum posts. As of yet I have not come up with a good solution, and i will look forward to reading any feedback for this. I will answer any questions as fast as possible, to get a good discussion goint here. Best regards, Rasmus

Will adding affiliate links negatively affect my SEO?
I'm thinking of signing up to a couple of affiliate programs related to my industry. Will adding affiliate links at the bottom of articles for example negatively affect my seo? I intend to have lots of useful content on my site and not just affililate links.

Tag clouds: good for internal linking and increase of keyword relevant pages?
As Matt Cutts explained, tag clouds are OK if you're not engaged in keyword stuffing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYPX_ZmhLqg) - i.e. if you're not putting in 500 tags. I'm currently creating tags for an online-bookseller; just like Amazon this e-commerce-site has potentially a couple of million books. Tag clouds will be added to each book detail page in order to enrich each of these pages with relevant keywords both for search engines and users (get a quick overview over the main topics of the book; navigate the site and find other books associated with each tag). Each of these book-specific tag clouds will hold up to 50 tags max, typically rather in the range of up to 10-20. From an SEO perspective, my question is twofold: 1. Does the site benefit from these tag clouds by improving the internal linking structure? 2. Does the site benefit from creating lots of additional tag-specific-pages (up to 200k different tags) or can these pages become a problem, as they don't contain a lot of rich content as such but rather lists of books associated with each tag? Thanks in advance!
