Does your website get downgraded if you link to a lower quality site?

My site has a pr of 4. My friends site has a pr of 2 but I think that he is doing some black hat seo techniques. I wanted to know whether the search engines would ding me for linking to (i.e., validating) a lower quality site.

The friend of mine with the pr2 site has some unique content that will benefit my readers. I conducted an email interview with him. I like the content and it brings value to my readers.

I was thinking about this issue as well. I would think that pr 9 sites have to link down. No where else to go. Plus, pr 6 or 7 sites are somewhat authoritative. However, I'm just building my trust factor at pr4. If i link to a pr 2 site and google finds something wrong with the pr2 site, then would they assume that I can't be trusted.

I would look at this in a holistic manner. First of all, why would you link? Is this just for backlinking/ranking purposes? Then don't do it.
But are you asking because your friend has actual content you want to share? In THAT case, is the content (topic) relevant to the content on your site? And do you generally only link out to other sites for the sake of sharing the content on them? If so for both, I don't see anything wrong with it. And if it is just to share the content, you can just nofollow it too for added "security".
But if its just to try and get your buddy a link, don't bother.

If you think about this question in more general terms, you'd never see CNN or New York Times link anywhere, since most sites have a lower PR than they do. And on the flip side, if I have a site with very little PR about pinball games, I'm not going to link to a site with a higher PR that's about buying pills that's full of spam.I don't have enough personal experience for your particular situation to offer an expert opinion for this case, however.

I see your point. I know him personally. He hired someone to build his website and offered him a cut of the revenue that he brings in. I did a bit of background check on his website since it appeared that he was ranking for a very competitive keyword. I don't think that he knows that his website programmer which gave him very good ranking for a difficult keyword might be doing it with black hat techniques.
perhaps, i should clarify. I'm a novice at this. What i saw was comment spamming with different aliases on very high ranked websites. I'm not sure if this is black hat techniques. Also, I'm not sure if this is not allowed. I didn't think that his seo guy was up to par since he used different aliases to comment. His username had a link to my friends website.
I hope that this helps to explain the situation and what i saw.

Probably not, although if he is acting unethically is this someone you want your customers/perspective customers seeing you involved with?

Our forum links are redirecting to high spammy & NSFW sites: Any impact on main website?
Hi all, We have a discussion forum like subdomain.website.com. Some spammers have created many links with our subdomain URL which are redirecting to high spammy and NSFW sites (Not sure how they did). We are trying to stop the redirects. So far many visitors and bots have recorded visits to these spammy sites with our URL. Will this impact our website anyhow ? I noticed that our website spam score has been increased and not sure if this is coincidental or penalized. Ranking even dropped without manual actions. What could go wrong? SEO on mobile site is different than desktop site.
We have a desktop site that has been getting worked on over the year regarding improving SEO. Since the mobile site is separate, the business decided to not spend the time to keep it updated and just turned it off. So any mobile user that finds a link to us in search engines, goes to a desktop site that is not responsive. Now that we're hearing Google is going to start incorporating mobile user friendliness into rankings, the business wants to turn the mobile site back on while we spend months making the desktop site responsive. The mobile site basically has no SEO. The title tag is uniform across the site, etc. How much will it hurt us to turn on that SEO horrid mobile site? Or how much will it hurt us to not turn it on?

Is this negative SEO? Should I disavow these links?
We have been doing our own internal link building for the last year and getting nice backlinks. As of the last few days, ahrefs is showing a lot of new links that seem very spammy. We have not hired anyone to do link building for us, and these are all being created on these sites under the same user name. There is a good amount of them popping up, and I fear we will be subjected to a google pentalty for unnatural links if its not addressed. My first question is, am I correct thinking this is negative seo, and not some random sites that picked up our content and is going across their affiliate websites? If so, then should I preemptively disavow all these links? Are there any good ways to stop this? How can I track who is placing these garbage links? Here are some examples of these bad links. I know I can find the webmaster via a whois but I think that really wont get me anywhere, but I could be wrong. Hello, So I have a website (example.com). I have an ajax pop-up (example.com/#example) that I am receiving a bunch of links to. Since this pop-up (example.com/#example) is on my homepage, are these links giving juice to the homepage, or this pop-up, or both?

What do Bing and Yahoo look for in a site?
Do Bing and Yahoo look for authoritative sites like google does? Do they punish sites for black hat or spamming? The reason I ask these questions is because one of my competitors was ranking in first place for many great keywords in Google, they have the highest authority out of all of their competitors. They must have been punished by Google because now they are not ranking for any great keywords in Google. However they are ranking 1st in Bing and Yahoo for most the top keywords, getting the the most visibility out of all the sites. Why Does Massive Reciprocal Linking Still Work?
It seems pretty well-settled that massive reciprocal linking is not a very effective strategy, and in fact, may even lead to a penatly. However, I still see massive reciprocal linking (blog roll linking even massive resource page linking) still working all the time. I'm not looking to cast aspersion on any individual or company, but I work with legal websites and I see these strategies working almost universally. My question is why is this still working? Is it because most of the reciprocally linking sites are all legally relevant? Has Google just not "gotten around" to the legal sector (doubtful considering the money and volume of online legal segment)? I have posed this question at SEOmoz in the past and it was opined that massively linking blogs through blog rolls probably wouldn't send any flags to Google. So why is that it seems that everywhere I look, this strategy is basically dismissed as a complete waste of time if not harmful? How can there be such a discrepency between what leading SEOs agree to be "bad" and the simple fact that these strategies are working en masse over the period of at least 3 years?
