Custom Attributes in Google Places

Hi Guys
I'm looking for some clarity of what I can and can't add to the custom attribute fields in a Google Places listing. From my understanding, you can add additional information about your services, but not what those services are.
The issue I'm trying to resolve is that a client of mine offers far more than the 5 services/ category options Places allow. They are a home services company, covering all sorts from plumbing, painting and decorating, through to extensions etc. They have about 25 different services.
At the moment I'm restricted to just getting rankings for 5 services (correlated to the categories in Places), when I'd like to rank locally for them all.
As Google is showing local results for most search queries related to their services whether those searches are geographically modified or not, I'm in a position where even if I am ranking top 5 organically for the terms, I'm still on bottom of page 1, or top of page 2.
Would it be wise to add these additional services to the custom attributes section of the Places listing, or would this set off the potential for a listing suspension?
Any ideas how to combat this problem would be very welcome.

Unfortunately Places does limit me in this instance, so you're right that other avenues of traffic generation would be a good route to head down.

I've been asked to pop by this discussion. You've asked a great question, Others have contributed sound advice here. Your client is encountering some of the limitations of Google Places. Yes, you are restricted to 5 main categories, and in a sense, this system favors businesses with a narrower focus over those with a much broader one (like your client). The method that you have undertaken of focusing the Place Page on the business' 5 most important categories is correct, and then using organic SEO to pursue what else you can. But, because of the heavy slant towards local results in the SERPs, those things for which your client is not getting a mapped result will be at the bottom of the page or even further down than that. There isn't really a way to get around this that I know of, and I don't see Google changing this layout for some time to come.
Regarding the additional details field, it's my own practice with my clients to keep this pretty brief. I do believe that a stuffed additional details section could send a danger signal to Google, but what the threshold is, nobody knows. In any case, I do not believe these details carry a huge deal of weight as compared to, say, the contents of the website, particularly in competitive verticals. Now, if the business was the only one of its kind in a rural area about which Google had a paucity of information - then, yes, I wouldn't be surprised to see those additional details gaining a little traction. But in a competitive vertical in a suburban or metropolitan area, I would not expect anything you put in there to enable the client to outrank a competitor who has chosen one of the phrases as one if his top 5 specialties.
This is one of those areas in which it is critical to correctly the set the client's expectations. If they offer 25 different services, they should not expect to be #1 for all of them unless they are the only game in town. Google's results are more democratic than this, so the client is forced by the system to zone in on what their most popular services are with their Place Page, and do the best they can with organic for the rest. Don't forget, traffic comes from video marketing, social media and other forms of marketing, too! If the client wants to highlight other services, a creative approach to finding ways to promote them beyond Places deserves some thought.

I would say not, they gave you only 5 categories, any more would be trying to manipulate results.
I also doubt it will work, i believe those extra fields are display only

Google Search Console - Indexed Pages
I am performing a site audit and looking at the "Index Status Report" in GSC. This shows a total of 17 URLs have been indexed. However when I look at the Sitemap report in GSC it shows 9,000 pages indexed. Also, when I perform a site: search on Google I get 24,000 results. Can anyone help me to explain these anomalies?

Rank Tracker Result Not Reflected In Google
I'm tracking keyword results in Rank Tracker, but I can't confirm the positions when I do a Google search for the tracked keywords. Does anybody know why RT says the site should be #23, but is not actually in Google? Is there a way to check Google results from different data centers? If I recall, Google allowed the option to view results from different cities, though I don't know if they still allow this.

Google drop down - keyword gone, why?
Hi guys, i received traffic off a yearly based term, this year for '2013' i noticed it is nowhere near what the yearly term was for the year before. I believe that Google has stopped the yearly term appearing in a drop-down menu from a big volume related term, my question is how do they determine what goes in the drop down menu for related/relevant searches?

Adding Orphaned Pages to the Google Index
Hey folks, How do you think Google will treat adding 300K orphaned pages to a 4.5 million page site. The URLs would resolve but there would be no on site navigation to those pages, Google would only know about them through sitemap.xmls. These pages are super low competition. The plot thickens, what we are really after is to get 150k real pages back on the site, these pages do have crawlable paths on the site but in order to do that (for technical reasons) we need to push these other 300k orphaned pages live (it's an all or nothing deal) a) Do you think Google will have a problem with this or just decide to not index some or most these pages since they are orphaned. b) If these pages will just fall out of the index or not get included, and have no chance of ever accumulating PR anyway since they are not linked to, would it make sense to just noindex them? c) Should we not submit sitemap.xml files at all, and take our 150k and just ignore these 300k and hope Google ignores them as well since they are orhpaned? d) If Google is OK with this maybe we should submit the sitemap.xmls and keep an eye on the pages, maybe they will rank and bring us a bit of traffic, but we don't want to do that if it could be an issue with Google. Thanks for your opinions and if you have any hard evidence either way especially thanks for that info. 😉

My homepage dropped off of Google today? Any ideas?
My site, www.leaffilter.com, previously ranked #1 for searches of "leaffilter" and "leaf filter". Today the #1 ranking for "leaffilter" with Google is gone. Well, it's not gone on all internet connection. At home the #1 ranking is in place. At the office computer it is not anywhere near page 1. I'm testing searches logged in, not logged in, cache and cookies cleared, different browsers. Other, secondary pages, are appearing on page 1. It looks as if the homepage is just no longer indexed...but not on all internet connection. Any ideas what is happening? Does anyone have any troubleshooting tips?

Google Penalty, Which one is hitting me?
Hello there SEOMOZ'ers, Just signed up for a Pro Account. Impressed with the trial. Just wondering is there any way to find out if you have fallen foul of a Google update, is there any way to know which you have fallen foul of or is the date it happens the only guide or pointer to what might have happened? My site was getting a reasonable amount of traffic for the last few years and was ranking well for my main search terms up till Feburary the 4th when the traffic fell by almost 50% ... and it has never really recovered. I thought it might be the Above the Fold Advertising penalty (or whatever it is called) because I had a lot of images linking elsewhere on my site, above the fold on my homepage, but I removed them about 4 weeks ago and the traffic still hasnt recovered. I've been using SEOMOZ to detect duplicate content and various other problems with my site since and fixing a good few of them each week. I have the main issues down from about 300 to about 20 which i think i have just fixed. I have also used Copyscape and found that some other websites had stolen some of my content, which i have since rewritten. I was ranking number 2 or 3 for my main keyword but dropped out of the top 100 in February, which is pretty frustrating at this stage. I don;t know if I have accidentally gone too far over optimising my site or what has happened. If anyone can give me some pointers I'd really appreciate it, if anyone can help me fix it I'll buy them a beer next time you are in Ireland! 🙂 Thanks, Shane
